My Body, `Tis of Thee II is a sixteen song compilation record brought to you by Centripetal Force Records with all proceeds going to Shout Your Abortion, an organization dedicated to “normalizing abortion and elevating safe paths to access, regardless of legality.”

Unless you live in a cave (or are willfully ignorant) you should already know that the United States Supreme Court overturned the constitutional right to an abortion in June of 2022. This is an abhorrent change in US politics that results in a massive human rights issue; in some cases forcing women to face the decision between a life threatening pregnancy or prison time. If that sounds extreme, read up more.

Centripetal Force has compiled works from the likes of Eve Maret, Abstract Black, Total Wife, Ziona Riley, John Condit, and many more to provide awareness of the issue (should you still be living in the cave) and to raise money to help fund the Shout Your Abortion organization that will aid women in their plight to retain bodily independence. The music itself is an incredibly pleasing, exclusive, group of tracks that comes out strong with the Robbie Lynn Hunsinger track “RoeVWade22” providing some serious education on the abortion topic.

The music is a bonus as the real benefit is donating to the cause. The compilation will be released on Friday, December 2nd; a Bandcamp Friday in which the platform waives fees adnd thus, makes it possible for Centripetal Force to donate the maximum amount of funds back to SYA. Abortion Care TN works to “remove barriers and increase access to reproductive and sexual health care including safe abortion care for all people.” If that doesn’t strike a chord with you in 2022, you’re living a willfully ignorant life. In June of this year the US Supreme Court removed federal protections for abortion care, overturning Roe v Wade. The dire consequences of that decision can not be understated and it’s now on all of us to work to support women in quest for bodily freedom.

Six One Tribe came on my radar back in 2021 with the release of The Soul in the Ville EP; a four track release that features a host of emcees – Corduroy Clemens, Trip God F’R F’R, Gee Slab, HB Mandella, Negro Justice, Riø Tøkyø, S-Wrap, 3van 6rey – and comes out of the gate swinging hard with relentlessly energy for the 16 minute runtime. It’s a helluva introduction to an impressive group of talent that has grown and morphed over the last year and a half into something even bigger and more impressive.

For the uninitiated, Six One Tribe is a collective of hip-hop talent from Nashville, TN that aims to create memorable music while propping up the community as a whole. There are approximately 16 “members” of the group at this time but they’ve been quick to note that “dozens” of other artists and creatives have contributed to the affair. All that is to say, it’s not about a membership card, it’s about creating a memorable body of work with as many people from the scene as they can wrangle. It’s difficult not to be aware of the group given that they’ve been on the cover of Nashville Scene, won Best Hip-Hop Group Single and were featured for Tribe Over Everything. For a group with a mission to raise awareness of Nashville’s hip-hop scene, they’re doing a helluva job already.

The mission of the group is undeniably admirable but there’s the obvious open question: does the full-length release, Tribe Over Everything, measure up to their goal? Spoiler alert: it does. Sonically, the production has improved tremendously since Soul in the Ville. No offense intended to that original release but there’s more headroom on the full-length that gives plenty of sonic space for the emcees and beats to shine tremendously. The album is dynamic as well; drifting between bouyant bangers, chilled out soundscapes and the occasional explosion of Soul-tinged party grooves. If you’re looking for an entry point, I advise starting with “Live in the Moment” (featuring Corduroy Clemens, Negro Justice and Ronni Raxx) as it embodies the diversity of styles, joyful vibes, personal insights and deep musicality that the project aims for.

The true strength of the album is the diversity of styles. “Black Mercedes” delivers an ominous beat mixed with hypnotic verses with a dash of humor. “Keys to the Kingdom” is a contemplative groovy track slathered in immerse vocal performances. “They On Notice” (the lead track) is confidently slick, creating an irresistible urge to bob along. “Is You Shittin’ Me?” is a blend of mischievous vocals and slow, deep, bass marching to a hilarious gang vocal chorus. “Grow Again” is absolutely berserk with energy. “Love Circle” is a melancholy, introspective, journey that instills some optimism as the album closes.

Just about every track on the record has something to catch your ear, ideally introducing you to some new emcees along the way and a peek at the landscape of Nashville hip-hop. That last bit is important to remember; Tribe Over Everything is an introduction to the group and our cities scene. It’s not holistic by any means but it serves as a calling card for folks to take notice that Nashville is a city that can’t be ignored when it comes to hip-hop. Just like the lead track says, Six One Tribe is putting the world on notice. Don’t miss it.

My first introduction to SONATORE was in the form of a music video in which he wore a shroud and sung about the heartache of a dissolving relationship. Shortly after, I encountered another video in which projections appeared around empty rooms of a house, a version of Sonatore still shrouded but now going as far as to embody a spectre (fitting for a song called “I am a Gh_st.”) Since that time, there has been a steady stream of new singles; all adorned with intriguing artwork and often with surprising collaborators like Morgan Bosman or Angie Marie Go.

Wearing a shroud and casting yourself as a visage may register as “dramatic” to some but it’s always struck me as “authentic.” Sonatore has already crafted a body of work that does not shy away from truthful, personal, emotional topics and with the release of the full-length American Boys he continues that journey. The album is truly an immersive experience, best experienced from start to finish.

By his own admission, American Boys is “essentially a break-up album” but it expands beyond that into the hardships of relationships as a whole. He tells us that the title track “sets the theme of how guys in the queer community haven’t necessarily been the best towards each other — whether it’s body shaming, elitism, or racism. In a weird way straight men are effected as well due to perceptions of masculinity and sexuality. It can cause people in both groups to not treat one another very well.” Listening back to the track with that context in mind, the refrain of “we’re breaking each other down” hits quite a bit harder. This isn’t just about two people having a hard time but community struggles both inwardly and outwardly.

The largess of the subject matter never causes the album to drag. Sonatore’s baritone vocals do instill a feeling of guarded emotional observations but they’re often backed by dance-y electronic drums, fuzzy bass, swirls of keyboards, layers of vocals and delightful handclaps. “L Train” feels like a bouncy walk through the city. “Locker Room Talk” weaves hip-hop influences, ominous guitars and an aggressively upsetting tale. “The Magician” floats you along with some hopeful optimism. The vocal style may register as a numbness but the music never reflects such a stoic feeling. The balance between the two is always carefully balanced.

American Boys isn’t a pop record but it’s not an overly self-indulgent bedroom record either. Working with producer’s Chance Cook and Pete Mulcahy Jr, Sonatore has crafted 40 minutes of music that manages to be catchy, intensely personal and outwardly thoughtful. As the winter months close in on us, take some time to actively sit and listen to the record; paying attention to the lyrics and providing yourself with an opportunity for some reflection and a bit of a good time along the way too.
