Super Bowl Dips, Dumpling Soda and Valentine’s Day Chiantis

For a rapid-fire topic extravaganza, hosts Mike and Kenneth provide some recipes for your Super Bowl party spread, including a fire recipe for Alabama White Sauce, also known as white gold. They also discuss Jack White’s guacamole hack, a few Rotel dip recipes, and the best Super Bowl day beers made locally. To begin the Valentine’s Day content this year, Mike gives a recipe for how to make your own non-alcoholic red wine, using 100 percent cranberry juice, and discusses other drinks to make with the tannic, intense red liquid, and how to incorporate florality into your V-day drinks. Then they go over the wide world of cheap Chianti, the perfect red to go with an Italian Valentines Day feast. There’s also plenty of marinara sauce hacks and a discussion on the magic of pasta water. Finally, Booze News finds Kenneth covering a wide range of stories including dumpling soda that’s only to be opened outside, Crypto’s disappearance from Super Bowl ads this year, Vincent Gallo’s strange dating website, and why spirits have finally toppled beer in market share. A Hall of Fame episode.

Six One Tribe – “Sky is Not the Limit”

Listening to the latest Six One Tribe single, “Sky Is Not The Limit“, I’m overwhelmed to share a prediction – the dreaded sophomore slump will not apply to Six One Tribe. In fact, I’ll go as far as to say that the forthcoming second record from the massive hip-hop collective will far surpass their debut record.

Having sixteen members in a group is a lot to handle. Having front page coverage from the local alt weekly before you’ve released an actual album is quite a bit of pressure itself. I don’t know the inner workings of the Tribe but my assumption was that the first record was getting their feet wet and getting comfortable with one another but not yet achieving the level of comfort where they can push their own envelope.

None of these predictions are based in fact – just observations from the outside. “Sky Is Not The Limit” is an elevated beat for the group embracing simplicity and beauty. Intylect, HB Mandella, BLVCK WIZZLE and Gee Slab all serve up confident verses; their individual personalities coming through with personal insights and clever wordplay. Even the video itself is elevated as you can feel the comfort between the performers.

Six One Tribe is pumping out a lot of material here in the first half of 2023 and I’ve got high hopes that their second full-length continues the trend of this first taste.

Anna Orchid – orchids lp

Orchids, the debut full-length from Anna Orchids, is a cacophony of styles that results in an absolutely beautiful and mesmerizing listen. Trying to classify this record is a fool’s errand because it refuses to fit into any one well-defined box as it mixes together bits of doom metal, triple time drum machines, heavy heavy synth and plenty of dance floor tactics. In less passionate hands, this would be an unlistenable mess but Orchids balances its disparate pieces with astonishing ease.

Keep you ears peeled for guest vocalists Kent Osborne, FREAKDADDY, Marble Girl and Alex Olive but, mostly, just tune in for a truly unique – and truly satisfying – genre blending experience.

Generosity of Spirit

Caroline Locorriere is officially the No.1 fan of the Momcult Podcast and she is bitter that she didn’t make it on as a guest until now. Thankfully she delighted us with her presence regardless. Caroline is a single mother to her 11yr old son. She shares with us her deepest mom shame, how she would parent if she got another chance at it and teaches us the “Hot Cocoa Exercise”.

S02.E03: Fear No Evil

The boys review and discuss Frank LaLoggia’s 1981 film Fear No Evil, starring Stefan Arngrim, Elizabeth Hoffman, Kathleen Rowe McAllen and Frank Birney. Neither entertaining nor sensical, this film left us questioning Michael’s taste in film choices. (This was his suggestion, y’all!) It becomes very clear that we’re watching a story about Lucifer, but we can’t help but notice similarities between the archangels and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

338: Scriptless

Flying into this episode without a lick of a script. Generally I take notes or even go so far as to write down everything I want to say but not this time. Fortunately, these fifteen locals tracks are all so excellent, it’s not the least bit difficult to have something great to say about them. As usual, you’ll find something within that you like – the W.O.T.T. Promise.

337: Track-by-Track: The Features, The Mahaffey Sessions 1999

The Features

For anyone that isn’t familiar; The Features were a highly revered rock band from the mid 90’s through 2017. They released a number of albums, explored a ton of different styles and always put on a helluva live show. You’d be hard pressed to find anyone that didn’t enjoy The Features on some level. Way back in 1999, the band was experiencing some changes. They’d released an EP with their indie label, Spongebath Records, and even recorded a full-length album with producer Richard Dortch; which had some songs released as a 10″ and on some samplers. A few band members left and a new band member joined, drummer Rollum Haas.

The band went BACK into the studio with producer Matt Mahaffey – also a labelmate of theirs on Spongebath with the band Self – to record another full-length album. That album was also never officially released… until January of 2023 in the form of this new album, The Mahaffey Sessions 1999; about 24 years after its inception.

For transparency, the album was released by my indie label – yk Records – so my interest in sharing this interview on this podcast is a bit biased. I want to promote the record and this is an excellent forum to do so. However, I actually worked at Spongebath Records back in 1999 and got my hands on a CDR of the album way back when. I’ve been listening to this record for over two decades, very regularly. It’s the impetus for me approaching the band in the first place to release it; I love this album and always thought it was beyond unfortunate that it was never released. All that is to say, even if yk Records hadn’t put this out, I’d still be talking to the Features in this forum because it’s a fantastic record.

I gotta give a huge thanks here at the top for the time the band spent with me. It’s not easy to remember details of something that happened a lifetime ago but they provide such fantastic insight. I am forever grateful to them for letting me release but, moreso, just MAKING IT in the first place. So, thank you The Features and here we go with our track-by-track discussion of The Mahaffey Sessions 1999

Piña Colada and Rum Diaries of Puerto Rico

For the season premiere, host Mike Wolf checks in from Puerto Rico as he investigates the origins and flavors of one of the most popular drinks on the planet: the Piña Colada. Mike visits the Caribe Hotel in San Juan, ground zero for the development of the drink, and discusses the importance of Coco Lopez coconut cream, which became essential to the drink’s popularity and was created at a University in San Juan. “Books and Booze” returns as we dive into the incredible research by Jeff “Beachbum” Berry in his book “Potions of the Caribbean,” and Mike shares some of his favorite passages of Hunter S. Thompson’s “The Rum Diary,” providing plenty of context for the midcentury boom happening in San Juan at the time. Finally, an important connection is made between Pitorro, Puerto Rico’s “tears of the mountain” moonshine drink and the finest rum on the island, the incomparable Ron Barrelito. Recipes and stories abound.

Enjoying Strange New Worlds

Larissa and Lauren are finally back in the actual studio to talk about Star Trek and the newest Trek series Strange New Worlds. What follows are the reasons why Pike might be one of the best captains, observations about casting (and recasting) some of our favorite characters, and how a strong knowledge of alien sports can help when -dammit- you just really need to sedate someone running around your ship.
