S02.E02: Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker

The boys review and discuss William Asher’s 1981 film Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker, starring Susan Tyrrell, Jimmy McNichol, Julia Duffy and Bill Paxton. Originally entitled Mother’s Dead before eventually becoming Night Warning during distribution, we can’t decide if this film is a queer horror classic or just plain homophobic. Sure, there’s male nudity, but we’re leaning more towards the latter. You’ll have to listen to find out why.

New Year’s Resolutions

Welcome to the start of Devalued season 2! In this episode, the Devalued gang reflect on where the small but mighty Devalued show has been and where it’s going next. Here’s to a whole new season! Happy New Year and thanks for listening!

S02.E01: The Rocky Horror Picture Show

The boys review and discuss Jim Sharman’s 1975 film The Rocky Horror Picture Show, starring Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick and Richard O’Brien. A long-time favorite for both Mike and Michael, but a first-time watch for Keith. Truly shocking! As it turns out, Rocky isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but there isn’t a shortage of Horror Fried hotties in this campy classic.

2022: Year End Review

The end of 2022 is imminent. As we do every year, we like to take a quick moment to look back at some We Own This Town accomplishments. It’s not so much for you as it is for us. And by us, I really mean me – Michael Eades.

Before we step into some of the stats for the year, we do want to extend an incredibly genuine Thank You for all the feedback, support and listenership we’ve received over the past year. This entire operation is homespun and driven by a labor of love. Our podcast hosts manage to create a wealth of entertaining and insightful shows all without any sort of monetary return. That labor is driven by our love of creating interesting stories and insights but also by your listenership; we literally couldn’t do any of this without you!

Having a look at the high level stats posted above, we made more episodes this year than the year prior and that also happened to result in more hours of things to listen to. We posted 50 music and video reviews and went absolutely nuts for Bandcamp Friday. We hosted a Happy Hour at Vinyl Tap and did our best to showcase local events over on do615.

Our roster of podcasts grew when we welcomed the infamous Lucy’s Record Shop to the network. Host Mary Mancini used the show as a platform to speak with a myriad of people involved with the venue / record store; both behind the scenes and as patrons. The 30th anniversary of the venue was celebrated with a massive show at DRKMTTR and a screening of Lucy Barks! over at The Belcourt. If you haven’t heard each and every episode of this show yet, subscribe and binge immediately.

We also welcomed the new show Devalued to We Own This Town; a podcast from Caroline Bowman & Michael Ackley that tries to tackle the question of “Do art and commerce go together?” It’s not an easy one to answer but they managed to discuss the topic with Steve Albini, Suzanne Ciani, Damon Krukowski, Tristen & Liza Anne, Gee Slab & Namir Blade and many many more. The insights provided by the guests are regularly profound and always inspiring. If you consider yourself a creative type, it’s essential listening.

Also new to the network is The Horror Fried Podcast! A film critique podcast focused on the realm of horror and cult movies, brought to you by Michael Combs, Mike Martin and Keith Clanton. The first season of the show was focused on Southern horror films and the boys managed to discuss thirteen films. They have a massive twenty film roster lined up for Season 2 and a focus on the intersection of queer and horror. Now is a great time to subscribe.

Of course, many of our existing shows continued to create some wonderful entertainment as well. Liquid Gold – our All Things Beverage podcast – released twenty three episodes throughout the year and managed to cover diverse topics such as War and Vodka, Ready to Drink Cocktails, the mysterious Träkál, The Old Cuban, Swampwater and the Tom & Jerry, just to name a few. They hit their 100th episode with a special 2-hour extravaganza with Teresa Mason of Mas Tacos and Wilburn Street Tavern.

Ladyland host Kim Baldwin became the digital editor at the Nashville Scene but still managed to release three fantastic video episodes of the show. Videos! Turns out, videos are a whole lot more work but the results are stellar. Go watch them.

Mom Cult wrapped up their first season and headed straight into their second with parental conversations with Kate Mills, Andrea Fecht and Jessie Busbee – just as a start.

Alex and Kelsey over at The Hills are Alive tackled different musicals throughout the decades; starting with Oklahoma in 1955 and working their way up to Evita in 1996. The show is on a bit of a pause at the moment but it’s a good time to go back and listen to their entire backlog.

Nashville Demystified and This is the Place, Into the Wormhole, and Filmography Club had some great episodes at the start of the year and we hope to hear more from them again in 2023.

We plan to write up what the gameplan is for 2023 but, for now, it’s nice to take a little breather and reflect on how things went. Please feel free to get in touch if you have any thoughts, ideas, requests or general feels. We’re also available on Instagram and Twitter, should you prefer a DM over an email.

Our work here is only worthwhile because of the community supporting it. That’s you. It always feels a little corny to say but I do truly believe it: We Own This Town has always meant to be inclusive. It’s You. It’s Me. It’s Us. We Own This Town.. Together.

Thank You

Sherry Season Finale with Craig Schoen and Nathaniel Smith

For the season finale hosts Mike and Kenneth finally tackle the wide world of Sherry, with a little help from their friends. One of the oldest, most misunderstood and delicious wines in the world, Sherry hails from Jerez, Spain. Guest Nathaniel Smith of 100 Mill Street Gin talks extensively of his recent trip to Spain exploring the Bodegas and Sherry houses. Craig Schoen of Peninsula, known for their excellent Sherry pairings and Spanish/Portuguese cuisine, discusses a few classic Sherry cocktails and amazing Sherry pairings. Booze news covers plenty of whiskey news and the largest bottle of wine in the world. Happy New Year from Liquid Gold!

335: The Eight Hour 2022 Celebration

TLDR: We put together 8 hours of great music from 2022 and decided to simply share it all. Enjoy!

This episode of the show we may have gone off the deep end a little bit. You see, in years past we’ve put together a playlist of some of our favorite songs of the year and then let the ole iTunes select 15 to 20 tracks as a representation of the year. There was always a massive playlist to pick from but it seemed like playing every song was just too daunting of a task.

…But this year, we decided – why not share the whole thing? There are a lot of options of media to partake in and listening to an eight hour long music podcast is probably not going to rank at the top of your list but that’s not really the point. This show is meant to serve as documentation of the Nashville music scene during a period of time. What better way to capture that than by playing an insanely long, incredibly diverse, immensely satisfying playlist?

As a bit of a caveat, we’re not a fan of BEST OF lists. There’s literally no way to say what artist or song was better than any other artist or song. Aside from the weird competitive nature of such a mindset, there’s literally just no way to *hear* everything that came out in a year. This playlist is fantastic but it’s incomplete. This isn’t holistic in terms of genres. Nor is it holistic in terms of what may have been the quote unquote BEST track from a given artist or release. It’s a massive, SUBJECTIVE, selection of songs. It does a damn good job of capturing 2022 but it isn’t everything. Despite that, let this be a jumping off point for you to learn more and find even more music from these artists if you enjoy them.

Eggnog Recipes and Christmastime Beverages

With most of the country stuck in a once-in-a-generation cold snap, host Mike Wolf offers up plenty of warming holiday beverages to get you through the weekend. First up is the mezcal hot toddy from the new book, along with tips on customizing your own hot toddy on a cold night. Then we dive into numerous eggnog recipes and the scientific case for aging your eggnog. We dust off George Washington’s famous eggnog recipe, a Vegan eggnog recipe with no eggs, how to make your own whiskey cream, and how to use that in a whiskey cream hot chocolate. Then we close it out with an old, never-released Christmas story from Charlie Nelson of Nelson’s Green Brier Distillery, from his days visiting Dublin and riding rickshaws for money. Happy Holidaze from Liquid Gold!

Your 2022 Local Holiday Music Playlist

As we have done for the past seven years, we’ve compiled a playlist of holiday music just for you. It’s about an hour long, it’s brought to you entirely by Nashville area artists and it runs the gamut in terms of eclectic genres. As a bonus, we really leaned in hard to the NPR style of voiceover; to really maximize your holiday vibes.

You can hear the 2022 edition of this playlist right here, in the embed below or in your favorite podcast app.

If that episode whets your appetite for more local holiday music, we got you covered! As you are preparing family meals, wrapping presents, partaking in a long drive or just generally chilling out, queue up these episodes. We’ve called this “a veritable sack full of goodies for your ears” in years past and that still seems apt!

2022: Volume 334

2021: Volume 283

2020: Volume 229

2019: Volume 175

2018: Volume 123

2015: Volume 72

2012: Volume 58

We’d love to play absolutely everything being offered by local artists for this time of year but that would result in a podcast so long, no mere mortal could possibly listen to it all the way through. Okay, maybe that’s not true but there are plenty more offerings out there if you’re interested. Here’s a handful:

Have a great, safe, holiday and be sure to keep your soundtrack local. There’s no reason not to.

Does Anybody Make It Anymore? Happy Hour Live with Lilly Hiatt and John P Strohm

Today we hear a really special episode; our first ever live episode! Recorded Thursday, December 15th at Vinyl Tap in East Nashville with acclaimed musician Lilly Hiatt and former Rounder Records president John P Strohm. The topic at hand was “Does Anybody Make It Anymore?” and both guests provided great insights from their unique perspectives. What is making it? Should artists set specific goals to achieve? How dirty of a word is “content”? Is social media a prerequisite for reaching creative satisfaction?

Thanks to everyone that came out and to Good People Brewing for the sponsorship. Devalued Happy Hour will happen again in March 2023; stay tuned.

Our Rock ‘n’ Roll Poll Contributions

Every year, the Nashville Scene graciously survey’s “Nashville’s finest rockers, rollers, rappers, bookers and more” to get their take on the best happenings of the year for their Annual Rock ’n’ Roll Poll. We are humbled to be invited to partake in this poll and put forth a conscious effort to be inclusive of as many of the great things we heard and saw over the year as we can. The results are always an entertaining read and I suggest you spend some time with it. The results are also, understandably, edited. Not everyone’s full answers can be included nor should they be. The Scene has to make some cuts along the way and that’s perfectly fine! However, it’s an opportunity for We Own This Town to share their full answers – just for the sake of transparency, clarity and general fun of sharing.

All that said, below you’ll find the prompts from the Scene and my complete answers to each one. I tend to be somewhat verbose but tried my best this year to scale back my answers. I want to be perfectly clear, I struggle with the notion of “Best Of” anything. These kinds of lists are completely subjective and no one person could have heard everything released in a calendar year to be able rank it against anything else. It makes sense that the Scene gathers these insights in aggregate to see what bubbles to the surface. These are just one person’s opinion and I feel it necessary to caveat these answers with the fact that I can’t possibly even remember everything that impressed me in a year. That’s a compliment to the Nashville music scene as a whole; there’s so much of it, it’s literally impossible to track.

All that hand waving aside, here are my answers…

Michael Eades – Curator at yk Records & We Own This Town

What local artist/band ruled Nashville in 2022?
Twen, Negro Justice, Total Wife, Wulven, Six One Tribe, Mike Floss, Volunteer Dept, Bez, $avvy, Sean Thompson, Caitlin Rose – way too many to name. It was an absolute avalanche of great music this year.

What local artist/band is going to rule in 2023?
Sugar Sk*-*lls, New Man, KMQ, Zook, Venus & The Flytraps, SuMo Dope, Ron Obasi, Jordan Xx, Thomas Luminouso, Anna Orchid, Heaven Honey. Oh, and I’m confident a blast from the past will excite folks in 2023.

What’s your favorite discovery this year, musical or not?
Janet Jackson’s “Rhythm Nation” contains a resonant frequency that can crash laptop harddrives.

What’s your favorite story in music — local or not — in 2022?
The blossoming of both WNXP and Third Man’s Blue Room has been an undeniable boon to Nashville. Seeing the onslaught of coverage from No Country for New Nashville, Nashville Indie, Nashville Show To-Go, and everyone else covering local music is stunning.

What’s one thing you hope we leave behind in 2022?
Embracing pessimism above all else. Change is hard (and unfortunate at times) but Nashville’s future is bright!

What’s one thing you hope to see in Nashville music in 2023?
Can we revive Next Big Nashville already? Please? If that’s not possible, I’d love to see more local music coverage in the fine pages of the Nashville Scene. How about a weekly article of 5 new worthwhile releases?

Who in Nashville deserves more coverage than they got in 2022?
So many! Lawndry, Crave On, Sundaes, Gardening Not Architecture, STACIAN, faster is faster, Sonatore, Amber Woodhouse, vast ness, Brainweight, bloopr, Love Montage, Virghost, BeHoward, Peachy, cosmic collective, Trash Man.

What’s your favorite local record of 2022?
Negro Justice: Chosen Family
Twen: One Stop Shop
Total Wife: A Blip, Forget Cassettes: Salt (Reissue)
Namir Blade: Metropolis
The Medium: For Horses
Again, the list is long – don’t pick just one!

What’s your favorite local song of 2022?
There’s no way to pick ONE!
Joe Kenkel “Sweeping”
Berlue “Going Nowhere”
Erin Rae “Modern Woman”
Negro Justice “No Throwaways”
Twen “One Stop Shop”
Peachy “Waiting”
Namir Blade “Mephisto”
Venus & The Flytraps “Boys are Cuter When They’re Crying”
Ron Obasi “VILLELIKEMOOKIE”

What’s the best performance you saw this year?
Lucy’s Record Shop 30th Anniversary show at DRKMTTR was as bonkers as it was heartwarming; big time on both counts.
