Sour Ops – “Now You’re Gone” (Official Video)

Sour Ops latest album X was released in April and contains ten tracks of bombastic rock songs, unfurling with loads of big riffs from start to finish. Their latest single for “Now You’re Gone” takes a different tact, showcasing the bands diverse songwriting abilities. The track is gentler than anything on X but, paired with the video, perhaps more sinister.

The press release for the track tells us that the song was inspired by a “1924 John Crow Ransom poem about the untimely death of a young girl. The narrator is forced to face the present by these circumstances while being overwhelmed by ghosts of their shared history.” Listening to the song solo, you can certainly feel this melancholy as it is underscored by the sweeping strings and frontman Price Harrison’s longing vocal performance.

However, the video turns that melancholy on its head. The story portrayed is one of exploitation, empowerment and a dash of murder. The narrative itself isn’t entirely clear on why these murderous undertakings are happening but there’s no denying that the juxtaposition of the lyrical delivery and the visuals is quite compelling.

Sour Ops continue to bring plenty of surprises to the table. X is a substantial rock record worthy of note but “Now You’re Gone” proves they aren’t just a one trick pony. Their visual presentation across album art and videos is impeccable to boot. By and large, they’re one to keep an eye on.

Novelette is your next favorite bookstore

Novelette is a brand new bookshop aiming to open up in the Nashville area late in 2021 or early 2022. The endeavor is spearheaded by Deezy Youngdahl and Jordan Tromblee; two names you may recognize if you’re a fan of Sad Baxter or Redheaded Stranger, respectively.

The shop aims to be carry a wide range of local authors, graphic novels and provide a safe space for folks of all different backgrounds. All told, it sounds like a very pleasant place to frequent and I, for one, would love to see the dream come alive.

On that note, the founders have started a GoFundMe campaign to help raise funds for launching the project. They’re looking for $25k and are off to a good start. That may sound like a lot of money or nowhere near enough, depending on what you think about the general expense of doing business. It sounds like an accomplishable goal to me.

Go donate to the shop fund (every little bit helps) and then follow @novellettebooksellers over on IG to keep up with developments.

Defy Film Fest returns for sixth iteration

If you’re unfamiliar, the Defy Film Festival is an independent film festival put together “by filmmakers for filmmakers” that takes place over in East Nashville at Studio 615 with a film list that spans horror, experimental, drama, comedy, dramady, sci-fi and thriller. That is to say, it’s an eclectic offering of films put together by people that are immersed in the work of actually making the stuff. Over the last six years they’ve managed to grow to a size that feels both large and varietal but still intimate for those attending that want more than just a series of screenings.

This year’s festivities kick off on Friday, August 20th at 6pm and runs into the night of Saturday, August 21st. Passes are available for the whole weekend or just individual days. They even offer a free pass to visit their lobby, should you just want to stare into the gaping maw of two experimental films. A little something for everybody.

If you browse their Instagram or click around through the various film blocks you might not see a whole lot that you recognize in terms of titles or directors but that seems to be entirely the point. Defy has created an event for film lovers to discover new peers and be inspired by fresh works, as well as provide a platform for creators to have their work seen by the ideal audience. The names may not be recognizable name but it’s a safe bet that you’ll be hearing more from all of these folks later on.

The film community in Nashville can be extremely small, particularly for those pursuing purely creative endeavors. We applaud Defy for consistently putting together a substantial – yet accessible – event for the independent creators. Do yourself a favor and pick up a pass.

Anchor Thieves – “Home” (Official Video)

Over the last ten years, Anchor Thieves has quietly become one of the most interesting bands to watch in Nashville. Diving into their catalog of releases reaching back to 2011’s Prerequisite to the most recent release Delete Delete / Enormous Normalcy (today, Aug 13), the band has grown from being a solid-and-enjoyable rock band into an outfit that feels unfettered by expectations or style implementations. There is no clear line of delineation when this change occurred – natural growth tends to happen slowly over time – but here we find ourselves with a new album, a new video and plenty of new surprises.

The official video for “Home” takes you on a gentle journey through a dollhouse before it is set aflame and burns to the ground. The lyrics “celebrate me when I’m gone, amongst the dirt and rust and limestone gravel*” are bleak but delivered beautifully. It’s a simple video but the dichotomy of visual and audio pair quite well as a reminder of the finite nature of it all.

The track itself is the lead song from Delete Delete, one of the two aforementioned releases the band has coupled together. They jokingly proclaim “Don’t call it a double album” over on Bandcamp but it’s a fourteen track undertaking split down the middle stylistically… it’s hard not to call a spade a spade. That said, Melon Collie and the Infinite Sadness this is not. The curse of the “Double Record” is real but if any band can pull it off, it’s Anchor Thieves. They’ve quietly and consistently proven that they suffer no lack of ideas and their execution is more than capable of pulling them off. “Home” provides another opportunity to burn your preconceived notions of the band down and immerse yourself in what they’re offering.

* best guess on lyrics but you get the point

Star Trek Villains: Shinzon

2002’s movie Nemesis gave Tom Hardy his first big Hollywood role as Shinzon, Picard’s clone that is moody AF, obviously the bad guy, and knows how to wear a cape. The ladies adore Hardy and his noteworthy performance, but lament the final TNG movie that lacked true TNG vibes and the wasted potential of Shinzon’s character. CONTENT WARNING: Includes discussion about sexual assault.

Nashville Selections for #BandcampFriday, August 2021

Back in May we were convinced that Bandcamp was pulling the plug on their monthly “Bandcamp Friday” celebration in which they waive their platform fee and give 100% of profits to the artists on their platform. We’re happy to report we were wrong. Turns out they just took a bit of a summer break and now the festivities have returned for August, with reports that it will continue until at least the end of 2021.

If you’re a regular reader of this site, you know we’re huge fans of Bandcamp and the service they provide. If you’re a musician, ubiquity is the key to success. Yes, having your music on streaming platforms like Spotify or Apple Music has its advantages but there’s absolutely zero downside in adding your music to Bandcamp. It creates a conduit for fans to discover your music and pay for it if they so choose. You might think we live in a era where the MP3 is a bygone relic but Bandcamp reports that $190 million in sales were made from May through July 2021, with 82% of that money going straight to the artists. That doesn’t seem like a signal that folks aren’t interested in paying for music. We won’t harp on about it but if you’re an artist, adding your music to Bandcamp is a no-brainer.

If you’re just a fan of music, Bandcamp Friday provides the opportunity to contribute to artists you enjoy in a very direct way. Discovering new music through streaming is great (which, btw, Bandcamp allows streaming) but being able to toss a few bucks to a band or artist that enriches your life is a fantastic way to ensure they have the means to continue doing so. Furthermore, with COVID-19 continuing to mutate and be tricky to navigate in the real world, buying music is a great substitute for going to shows.

All that said, we want to help guide you to some interesting selections! Follow along over on Twitter to see what we have to say or just check the curated BuyMusic.club list below for some starting points. If you’d like to go it alone in your discovery, I suggest starting here, it’s never let me down.

Caitlin Rose – “Whatchoo” (Official Video)

Back in 2010, Caitlin Rose released her debut album Own Side Now, a critically acclaimed blend of classic country with accessible pop sensibilities laden with brilliant lyricism. Now, ten plus years on, she’s announced an anniversary re-issue of the album that comes coupled with a bonus 7″ featuring two new tracks.

One such track is “Whatchoo” – a b-side that we captured on WOTT Music back in July of 2020. We absolutely loved the track then and have a hard time understanding how it could ever have been considered a b-side! Regardless, it’s exciting that the track found a permanent place in the world as part of this reissue. The accompanying karaoke style video from Sarah Goldstein is a calming bit of VHS warping paired with some sing-along lyrics.

If you haven’t heard it, give Own Side Now a listen and consider ordering one of the vinyl packages. Oh, and follow Ms. Rose on the socials, you certainly don’t want to miss out on any future announcements.

262: Confident Submissions to your Regular Rotation

We kick this episode off with a special track that serves as both tribute and fundraising effort for Fran’s East Side. If you haven’t seen the news about Fran’s, their lease is not being renewed by their landlord and they need some fundraising help. Sadly, this sort of situation is becoming much more common.

With that bit of concerning news out of the way, we dive into a playlist of tracks that I promise will land in your regular rotation. At least one of them, if not more. DM me if you feel otherwise.

BeHoward & FU Stan – “Dope Boy” (Official Video)

Collaboration has always been King when it comes to hip-hop. The earliest days of the genre established sampling as an extremely valid form of creation and no other genre has been more open to “featuring” like-minded artists on one another’s tracks. Lately Nashville’s been seeing these types of collab’s taken to the next level. The latest from BeHoward and FU Stan, entitled “Dope Boy“, finds the two talented emcees not only working on a track together but an entire short film.

“Dope Boy” as a standalone track is a deep bass extravaganza that gives plenty of room for both BeHoward and FU Stan to shine on their individual verses. It’s an enjoyable listen that takes on entirely different meaning when paired with the official video, in which BeHoward and FU Stan portray Claude and Ray, two elderly gentleman looking to make a buck off a bottle of pills. They stumbled their way through a possible exchange before completely botching a sympathy purchase by over-asking on the price of the goods. No description of the piece could do it justice as the absurd acting and improvised exchanges between the two just simply must be seen to be understood. The duo’s ineptitude undermines the lyrics of the track which are primarily aimed at the cunning lifestyle of a dealer. Claude and Ray are anything but cunning.

It’s unclear if the track was meant to be satire paired with the video but, regardless, it’s a brilliant turn of play made even more impressive by how ridiculously enjoyable the characters are. As luck would have it, this isn’t a one off track. There is a full release between BeHoward and FU Stan looming on the horizon in the form of a Claude and Ray EP. If we’re lucky, there will be more videos following all sorts of additional bumbling misadventures. BeHoward and FU Stan are setting a new bar on what collaboration looks like.
