Thirdface – “Villains” (Official Video)

If you couldn’t tell from the embed thumbnail, the following video contains some intense imagery.

Hardcore outfit Thirdface released their full-length record Do It With a Smile back in March of 2021. It’s twelve heavy and foreboding tracks delivered with intensely delivered vocals that explode with a cathartic ferocity. The band recently released the official video for “Villains!” and that catharsis manifests itself as a horror film serving as a gruesome message of empowerment for the working class.

The video depicts a group of rural working class individuals clearing up brush and chopping down trees, being beaten by their onlooking supervisors for pushing themselves to the point of exhaustion. One worker is visited by a visage of death and bestowed a weapon to enact revenge – a sequence that feels influenced by the likes of folk horror, Quentin Tarantino and the best cult films. Equipped with the protective power of the sword, the worker bestows a series of brutal deaths to those that wronged their crew, complete with excessive grindhouse blood splattering.

It’s a pretty safe bet that no one involved in the band or the video thinks that literal murder is the answer to the problems of the working class but it’s not much of a stretch to interpret the video as a reminder that the proletariat have it in their power to take on those in charge. It’s also entirely possible that there’s nothing to read in to here and it’s a straightforward horror story of revenge with a badass sword and a mystical creature from another realm. Either way, it’s worth a watch or two.

Do It With a Smile is streaming everywhere. They’re playing at DRKMTTR on September 5th. Go see them and ask them what the video really means.

Quez Cantrell – “Creepin’ At My Window” (Official Video)

Quez Cantrell released “The Black Today” back in mid-2020 and garnered a good deal of critical acclaim for the frankness and vulnerability of the track regarding the Black Experience. If you’ve not seen the video for it, do give it a spin. The song was part of a larger release entitled 9 that contained a number of additional tracks containing the same powerful honesty.

One such track from the record is “Creepin’ At My Window,” a darker tale that “dives into the psyche of Today’s African American living in America.” The official video paired with the song is a full-on short film portraying Cantrell surrounded by tragic news that drives him to be eventually trapped inside his own safe room, plastered with headlines and reminders of the difficulty of being Black.

Even without the video, the song packs a lyrical punch but Cantrell leverages the visual medium to push the message even further. A viewer could watch this and see a protagonist fueled by paranoia but, with a little thought, it’s clear that the hesitation towards the outside world is earned. This isn’t a manifestation of fear as much as it is grappling with the constant barrage of high incarceration rates, police brutalities and general mistreatment simply for being a person in the world. The horror conceit serves a reminder of how unjust things currently are, a scary position to be in if ever there was one.

Cantrell has followed up 9 with multiple additional singles – “Lift My Spirits” and “Vent” among them – that continue to showcase not only his skills as an emcee but as a lyricist unafraid of sharing his experiences; both on an individual level and as a person of color. We’re optimistic there’s more to come and, in the meantime, we suggest giving him a follow on Instagram and YouTube, so you don’t miss out.

Deep Sea Vegan seeking permanent port

If you aren’t aware, Deep Sea Vegan is a bi-weekly pop-up offering at Hunter’s Station featuring all plant-based foods with a focus on recreating marine based offerings. Put another way, they cook up Crab Cakes, Fish Sandwiches, Calamari Po’Boys and more all with their own house made recipies using only edible flowers, plants and vegetables (no tofu, seitan, tempeh, etc). Every time they open, they have massive lines and high demand. So, sensibly, they’re looking to expand their offering to a more permanent brick and mortar offering.

To raise the funds for their new, hopeful, location they’ve opened up a campaign on Mainvest, a website that takes investments from the community and puts them towards a business plan. The similarities with the likes of GoFundMe or Kickstarter are clear – it’s a way to accept money from anyone to help finish a project – but there’s one key difference worth noting; investments on Mainvest are setup to return a profit to the original investee. Take the Deep Sea Vegan campaign for instance. They are looking to raise $100,000 and aiming for a 1.7x return. So, if you put in $100, they’d pay you $170 by the specified date (April 2028 in this instance). Raising money for a given endeavor isn’t a novel idea but potentially benefiting everyone who invested certainly is.

The project page documents insight about the company; it’s a family and black-owned business, the founder and Chef is actually scuba certified and their business plan is posted that details on how they plan to succeed. It’s not wishful thinking, it’s a full-on presentation of how they plan to build their business.

At We Own This Town, we really aim to showcase a variety of endeavors that make Nashville great; particularly those that are antithetical to the stereotype of the city. Deep Sea Vegan checks a lot of those boxes. It’s a vegan restaurant, it’s marine themed (which is, honestly, pretty rare in the vegan world), it’s raising money from the community and it’s looking to give back to that pool of investors. If you have the means to do so, this seems like a sensible opportunity to get in on the ground floor of something wonderfully unique for our city.

Shots! Lemonade

For National Lemonade Day, Mike guides you on a century-spanning tour through the origins of this simple, delicious beverage. From its origins in Egypt and China to the cafes of 17th century Paris, lemonade has been a phenomenon all over the world. Also discussed: a Victorian-era recipe for lemonade, where pink lemonade originated, what makes an “ade,” and the correct percentage of juice in a homemade lemonade.

Mike is also joined by his daughter for the first time on the show, as she details her passion for lemonade and methods for a “rainbow unicorn lemonade.” She also details the perfect food pairing for lemonade: hot dog tacos.

Da Real A1yo – “Take It Der” (Official Video)

There has been an influx of highly prolific hip-hop recently. Petty has been releasing a new single every single week, Gee Slab has been cranking out tracks, podcasts and videos, Negro Justice had a run on EPs and videos and now Da Real A1yo is stepping up. In 2021 alone he’s released Thugs Need Love 2, A Week in Miami, Vendetta and a collab single with B. Stokes called “Star.” On top of all that, he’s also been releasing videos for tracks from these selections to remind of the vast body of work that exists.

Take It Der” is the latest video from the A1yo camp, taken from the Vendetta full-length. The video is filled with performance footage, drone shots and numerous effects that feel like a slowly induced drug trip. Many of the shots feel inspired by the likes of Darren Aronofsky’s Requiem for a Dream or The Prodigy’s infamous “Smack My Bitch Up” music video. That’s not to say it’s a direct homage but it’s got the same vibe. All told, the video is a high paced endeavor that keeps you locked in for the perfect single duration of 2 and a half minutes.

Da Real A1yo is putting in a massive amount of work to achieve this level of output and it does not go unnoticed. The beats throughout the releases are getting more compelling and his flow is impressively confident and compelling on every track. If you aren’t already, give him a follow over on Instagram, YouTube and Spotify.

Amanda Stone – “Candy Baby”

Occasionally the description of a song sounds so outlandish it’s hard to believe it could ever be pulled off successfully. Amanda Stone‘s new single “Candy Baby” is a fusion of garage-rock, classic doo-wop girl groups, modern pop percussion and a little dash of squelching bass. One would assume those disparate influences could never fit together but, incredibly, it works excessively well.

This blending of styles should come as no surprise as Stone has proven to be a bit of a shapeshifter. Her prior undertaking Baby Brains was a crunchy garage-rock outfit that was put on pause in order to pursue a more diverse set of sounds as Amanda Stone. Her first single, “She’s Foolin’ You” was a marked style departure that was much gentler in nature and started to show signs of plenty of new instrumentation coming into the fold. The followup, “I Want You,” is a saccharine sweet doo-wop throwback, complete with bouncy handclaps, whispery vocal bridge and Marilyn Monroe artwork. With “Candy Baby” she takes the divergence explorations even further by turning that innocent doo-wop vibe into something sinister, gracefully fusing together those disparate elements and topping it off with some dominatrix artwork. Generally, remarking on the visual appeal of a musical artist would be contributing to a longstanding misogyny problem but the characters here are clearly an intentional part of the total delivery.

The whole of Stone’s body of work may just be three singles at this time but there’s clearly a metamorphosis happening over time. Having the opportunity to watch an artist change dramatically with each new offering while maintaining aspects of the previous release is a fascinating act to behold. “Candy Baby” is an enjoyable banger for the summer but there’s no telling what the next track will sound like. We’ll just have to stay tuned in to find out.
