5 Wines to Pair With Heartbreak with Jodi Bronchtein of Audrey

Hosts Mike and Kenneth sidestep the red schmaltz and instead turn to red wine and heartbreak for Valentines this year. They’re joined by esteemed wine professional and sommelier Jodi Bronchtein, wine director at Audrey in Nashville, Sean Brock’s new flagship restaurant in McFerrin Park. Jodi breaks down 5 wines to pair with heartbreak in a way that only she can. Well-versed in both subjects, Bronchtein even brings music and food pairings to bear, along with 5 incredible wines from all over the world. For Booze News, Kenneth practically makes Jodi spit out her Champagne as he discusses the long-term impacts of the movie “Sideways,” and its dubious lead characters. Also covered: the Royal Family, Steve Nicks, hope, despair, and fried chicken.

290: Late to the Party is Still at the Party

Flying without a script on this one so it’s a bit loosey goosey but that doesn’t stop the phenomenal music from spilling out of the Nashville area. By total happenstance this episode also serves as a reminder that you don’t have to be on the bleeding edge of new releases, good new music is good new music no matter when you encounter it. Like the title says, being late to the party is still at the party. Welcome.

Nashville Bandcamp Friday, February 2022

At the end of 2021, it really seemed like the folks at Bandcamp were planning on ceasing their Bandcamp Friday celebrations into 2022. For the past two years, the music distribution service has waived their fees and given 100% of proceeds to artists on the first friday of the month. It’s a huge boon to artists but not likely something that Bandcamp would continue forever. Fortunately, they have announced that it will at least continue in March, April, and May of this year. A pessimistic person may say that Bandcamp Friday is not 100% altruistic because it does bring a lot of awareness to Bandcamp but, in reality, it’s a very financially stable company willingly choosing to waive a large sum of income once a month for the benefit of artists. Pretty damn altruistic if you ask me.

With that in mind, please take advantage of Bandcamp Friday to support artists. Streaming services like Spotify, Apple Music, et al pay a pittance for individual streams. Even the “best” royalty rate for streaming is still fractions of a penny.

To help you support artists, we’ve got a handy list of some releases worth your while. We’re also tweeting about our findings if you want a bit more detail. If none of that feels sufficient, just find your own Nashville discovery and show your support!!

289: An Avalanche of Goodness

We often talk about the avalanche of good music happening at any given time from the Nashville scene and this episode certainly exemplifies that. We are extremely proud to debut “10,000 Hours” in this episode, the first track from the forthcoming Six One Tribe full-length album but that’s not the end of the goodness pouring forth here. Always something good to hear, just keep listening.

Denis Villeneuve: Arrival

This episode, we dive into the film that brought Villeneuve into the spotlight – 2016’s Arrival. The science-fiction / drama with Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner and Forest Wittaker was, deservingly, nominated for a ton of awards and won several of them (including the Oscar for Best Sound Editing)! Arrival is another of those Villeneuve movies that works just fine the first time you see it but only through repeated viewings does the full scope of accomplishment truly reveal itself.

To discuss these layers, we welcome back Los Angeles based filmmaker and cinematographer Ted Ringeisen. You may remember him from last season, where we talked about Green Room and Ted’s favorite movie Jaws. Any excuse to sit down with Ted is a good one.

Filmography Club gets into spoilers pretty quickly and this episode is no different! Be warned, spoilers ahead.

Dry Ginuary and the Future of Drinking with Erin Barnett of Spirit Animal Co-Op

Hosts Mike and Kenneth sidestep dry January pitfalls and invite spirits expert Erin Barnett of Spirit Animal Co-Op on the show to discuss “Dry Ginuary,” an ambitious project in which a group of beverage professionals try a new gin every day in January. Erin brings 5 of her favorite gins from this January, including West coast citrus-forward gins, German Riesling-infused gin, and an award-winning stunner from Mississippi. All the gin serves as a truth serum, as the discussion turns towards the future of drinking, beverage printers in the home, gin and tonics before bed with the Royal family, and what America is really fighting over. Also discussed: Were Magnolia trees the first sentient being?

Kyle Hamlett Uno – On the Blink

Over the past few years Kyle Hamlett has embraced collaboration. This may manifest as a clever pseudonym like Kyle Hamlett Trio and Kyle Hamlett Quattro; signifying the number of others involved or it may be an entirely new name; such as Odon, the name reserved for his collaboration with Sam Fuller-Smith. He’s also been found credited on various other recordings, including appearances with Stone Jack Jones; a like-minded troubador. With his latest release, the Kyle Hamlett Uno EP On the Blink, he finds himself collaborating with famed producer Roger Moutenout. It may not be noted in the name but the work itself serves as a testament to being open to outside influences.

If you’re not familiar, Roger Moutenot has worked with the likes of Yo La Tengo, Sleater-Kinney, Bill Frisell, The Rentals, Jessie Baylin, They Might Be Giants, Chuck Prophet, Rosanne Cash and John Prine. That’s far from the exhaustive list but it does provide great evidence that Moutenot is able to traverse a lot of different styles; presumably because he augments the work in a positive way. In joining up with Hamlett, he’s credited with the overall production as well as providing keys, drums and some vocals. Listening to “On the Blink”, the title track, there’s a newfound ominous vibe and a devilishly aggressive guitar style previously unheard in Hamlett’s compositions. These new elements continue to reveal themselves throughout the three tracks; “Indoor Icestorm” has a refreshing lightness to it and “Another Year of 13 Moons” is shockingly tropical.

None of these tracks come across as a total reinvention of anything Hamlett has done previously but it’s clear that the collaboration has injected new ideas and approaches to the songs. This kind of life injecting energy doesn’t come automatically when working with a producer but when it’s the right producer, it can be absolutely magical. With On the Blink, it’s clear that Hamlett and Moutenot have found that magic in one another.

Sean Thompson’s Weird Ears – “Saturday Drive” (Official Video)

Sean Thompson’s Weird Ears is the amusing moniker for guitarist Sean Thompson’s solo endeavors. He’s been releasing music under this name since 2019’s Time Has Grown a Raspberry and continuing through 2020’s Weird Ears for Weird Times 2. He’s also an incredibly accomplished musician that has appeared on an innumerable amount of diverse albums from Spencer Cullum’s Coin Collection to Eve Maret to Promised Land Sound and even more live appearances that are beyond documentation. He has a penchant for the psychedelic that oozes out through intricate guitar performances that never feel oppressively noodle-y. All that is to say, he’s a busy guy and it’s exciting to learn that he’s releasing a new full-length record to be released by Curation Records in the not-so-distant future.

The first single, “Saturday Drive“, presents an unexpected dive into Classic Country sounds. Thompson’s signature guitar moves are front and center from the very start, backed by a rollicking western drum beat and plenty of pedal steel courtesy of Spencer Cullum. It’s an upbeat ditty about hitting the road with your dog; fitting that it calls back to the era of country music that was steeped in long haul truckers. Fortunately, it’s also not without an edge of psychedelic flavor that makes it definitively the work of Thompson.

If “Saturday Drive” is any indication of the full record (and we have it on good authority that it is), we look forward to more rumination’s of the good times, taking drives, playing music and generally enjoying being alive.

After the Episode without Jenny Black: Caitlin Mello

Joy and Sarah sit down together without marriage and family therapist Jenny Black to reflect on their discussion with Caitlin Mello. Hear what happens when our hosts are unexpectedly left to their own devices. Spoiler alert: there’s plenty of great insight on Mello, COVID holidaze and some meandering with unkempt abandon.
