Denis Villeneuve: Blade Runner 2049

Filmography Club discusses plot lines and spoilers right from the start, so please consider this your warning before diving in.

In this episode, filmmaker and cinematographer Ted Ringeisen joins once again for an in-depth discussion on 2017’s retro-future noir Blade Runner 2049. Making a sequel to to Ridley Scott’s highly influential 1982 title (Blade Runner) was a notably risky undertaking for Villeneuve and this episode dives into all of the highs and lows of the results.

RatBestFriend – themes

The working idea behind the songs on themes was the idea of sound being used to a visual, ostensibly cinematic end (hence its title). The music is meant to conjure up memories that may or may not have happened, feelings of longing for something you didn’t realize you had until it was gone. These songs are meant as a sort of catharsis for the trauma we have from the sheer passage of time.

The debut release (as far as I know) of Rat Best Friend is a two song offering entitled themes. With a runtime of approximately five minutes, it would seem like it’s not a lot to go on but sometimes two songs is all you need to conjure a great deal of excitement. While brief, the tracks manage to seamlessly blend together ambient soundscapes, hints of shoegaze, a dash of post-rock and plenty of dreamy film sequences. “Theme Two” in particular creates a vast wash of sound that is extremely difficult not to put on constant repeat. Looking forward to more.

291: Straight Outta Nashville, Always

5 Wines to Pair With Heartbreak with Jodi Bronchtein of Audrey

Hosts Mike and Kenneth sidestep the red schmaltz and instead turn to red wine and heartbreak for Valentines this year. They’re joined by esteemed wine professional and sommelier Jodi Bronchtein, wine director at Audrey in Nashville, Sean Brock’s new flagship restaurant in McFerrin Park. Jodi breaks down 5 wines to pair with heartbreak in a way that only she can. Well-versed in both subjects, Bronchtein even brings music and food pairings to bear, along with 5 incredible wines from all over the world. For Booze News, Kenneth practically makes Jodi spit out her Champagne as he discusses the long-term impacts of the movie “Sideways,” and its dubious lead characters. Also covered: the Royal Family, Steve Nicks, hope, despair, and fried chicken.

290: Late to the Party is Still at the Party

Flying without a script on this one so it’s a bit loosey goosey but that doesn’t stop the phenomenal music from spilling out of the Nashville area. By total happenstance this episode also serves as a reminder that you don’t have to be on the bleeding edge of new releases, good new music is good new music no matter when you encounter it. Like the title says, being late to the party is still at the party. Welcome.

Nashville Bandcamp Friday, February 2022

At the end of 2021, it really seemed like the folks at Bandcamp were planning on ceasing their Bandcamp Friday celebrations into 2022. For the past two years, the music distribution service has waived their fees and given 100% of proceeds to artists on the first friday of the month. It’s a huge boon to artists but not likely something that Bandcamp would continue forever. Fortunately, they have announced that it will at least continue in March, April, and May of this year. A pessimistic person may say that Bandcamp Friday is not 100% altruistic because it does bring a lot of awareness to Bandcamp but, in reality, it’s a very financially stable company willingly choosing to waive a large sum of income once a month for the benefit of artists. Pretty damn altruistic if you ask me.

With that in mind, please take advantage of Bandcamp Friday to support artists. Streaming services like Spotify, Apple Music, et al pay a pittance for individual streams. Even the “best” royalty rate for streaming is still fractions of a penny.

To help you support artists, we’ve got a handy list of some releases worth your while. We’re also tweeting about our findings if you want a bit more detail. If none of that feels sufficient, just find your own Nashville discovery and show your support!!

289: An Avalanche of Goodness

We often talk about the avalanche of good music happening at any given time from the Nashville scene and this episode certainly exemplifies that. We are extremely proud to debut “10,000 Hours” in this episode, the first track from the forthcoming Six One Tribe full-length album but that’s not the end of the goodness pouring forth here. Always something good to hear, just keep listening.

Denis Villeneuve: Arrival

This episode, we dive into the film that brought Villeneuve into the spotlight – 2016’s Arrival. The science-fiction / drama with Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner and Forest Wittaker was, deservingly, nominated for a ton of awards and won several of them (including the Oscar for Best Sound Editing)! Arrival is another of those Villeneuve movies that works just fine the first time you see it but only through repeated viewings does the full scope of accomplishment truly reveal itself.

To discuss these layers, we welcome back Los Angeles based filmmaker and cinematographer Ted Ringeisen. You may remember him from last season, where we talked about Green Room and Ted’s favorite movie Jaws. Any excuse to sit down with Ted is a good one.

Filmography Club gets into spoilers pretty quickly and this episode is no different! Be warned, spoilers ahead.

Dry Ginuary and the Future of Drinking with Erin Barnett of Spirit Animal Co-Op

Hosts Mike and Kenneth sidestep dry January pitfalls and invite spirits expert Erin Barnett of Spirit Animal Co-Op on the show to discuss “Dry Ginuary,” an ambitious project in which a group of beverage professionals try a new gin every day in January. Erin brings 5 of her favorite gins from this January, including West coast citrus-forward gins, German Riesling-infused gin, and an award-winning stunner from Mississippi. All the gin serves as a truth serum, as the discussion turns towards the future of drinking, beverage printers in the home, gin and tonics before bed with the Royal family, and what America is really fighting over. Also discussed: Were Magnolia trees the first sentient being?
