294: The Broken Social Scene of Wedgewood-Houston

On this episode, we lean hard into the offering of eclectic varieties. Get ready for about an hour of hip-hop, indie rock, dance, electronic, space country, 60’s pop, introspective musings and a dash of instrumental soul. Seriously, this episode makes good on all of that and then some!

Nashville Bandcamp Friday, March 2022

Somewhat surprisingly, Bandcamp recently announced that they will be joining Epic Games. Meaning, the company that makes Fortnite and the Unreal Engine will also be the parent company of everyone’s favorite artist-friendly music service. Unsurprisingly, the Internet’s reaction to this news has been quite mixed. It’s an understandable bit of pessimism but I try to keep in mind that Epic has done some good things; notably going toe-to-toe with Apple in a lawsuit to get them to bend their rules to be more creator friendly. They spent millions, lost and continue to pursue the endeavor. Yes, there are some self-serving ends to that lawsuit but they’re still putting their money where their mouth is. Long story short, the jury is still out on the acquisition and time will tell what it yields.

In the meantime, Bandcamp hasn’t changed a thing. Case in point, today is Bandcamp Friday and the company is continuing to waive their platform fee and give 100% of proceeds to artists for all purchases. Even if you have less than zero interest in owning some downloadable music, this is an opportunity to throw a few dollars to artists you love to show your appreciation.

As always, we’ll be keeping a running list of selections that we deem worth your while. We’re also tweeting about our findings if you want a bit more detail. We’ll also advise that you find your own Nashville discoveries and show your support!!

Matt and Mickey are denied a visit to a tasty new pizza spot, spend some time in Hillsboro Village, discover a magical happy hour with bagels and take a deep dive into the problem of overwhelming menu options.

Join in for a lively chat about Anzie Blue, Snooze A.M., Shep’s Deli, Buttermilk Ranch and even a bit of Cheesecake Factory.

On the music front: Matt is excited about the new Cate Le Bon record, Pompeii, and Mickey can’t wait to read the new J Dilla book, The Life and Afterlife of J Dilla, the Hip-Hop Producer Who Reinvented Rhythm.

292: Take the Dive Into the Deepend

We’ve got brand new tracks from Gee Slab, Pretty Shy, Jordan XX, Louis Prince, Sonatore, Palm Ghosts, Spodee Boy and tons more coming your way. They’re really packed in on this episode! After the Episode with Jenny Black: Tyler Gilstrap

The gals dive into the differences between “traumatizing” our kids and just being human as well as the importance of taking care of our own inner toddler. Jenny talks about her frustration with the unspecified haziness of mom guilt (Is “good guilt” a thing?) and shares her favorite hack for teaching consequences.

Gee Slab – “Load”

Gee Slab has been continuously prolific for the past year and some change. If you haven’t heard the Because I Can EP or the “Hand Grenades” single, do so at your earliest convenience. You’ll also want to check out the Six One Tribe track “10,000 Hours“, the Highlight Tapes feature, his YouTube channel and his umbrella brand Believe in New Opportunity. Most importantly, you’ll want to queue up “Load,” the first single from the forthcoming EP The First Afterthought and, possibly, some insight into what the new full-length album will sound like that’s slated for release later this year.

The track, produced by Namir Blade, continues to show the progress and evolution of Gee Slab’s sound. His flow is more confident than ever and filled with his signature clever and boastful turn of phrases. Blade’s production is a stellar fit that swells and breaks beyond the standard “set it and forget it” backing beat. On the whole, the track leverages instrumentation that sneaks up on you through the duration of the listen; eventually giving way to a dose of lush strings.

If Gee Slab’s prior output is any indication, there’s bound to be more surprises coming our way over the coming months. “Load” is a helluva sneak peek at things to come but when it comes to Gee Slab, we’ve really no idea what may be coming. Fortunately, this is the first break in the dam and we’re looking forward to the flood of new music.

Denis Villeneuve: Blade Runner 2049

Filmography Club discusses plot lines and spoilers right from the start, so please consider this your warning before diving in.

In this episode, filmmaker and cinematographer Ted Ringeisen joins once again for an in-depth discussion on 2017’s retro-future noir Blade Runner 2049. Making a sequel to to Ridley Scott’s highly influential 1982 title (Blade Runner) was a notably risky undertaking for Villeneuve and this episode dives into all of the highs and lows of the results.

RatBestFriend – themes

The working idea behind the songs on themes was the idea of sound being used to a visual, ostensibly cinematic end (hence its title). The music is meant to conjure up memories that may or may not have happened, feelings of longing for something you didn’t realize you had until it was gone. These songs are meant as a sort of catharsis for the trauma we have from the sheer passage of time.

The debut release (as far as I know) of Rat Best Friend is a two song offering entitled themes. With a runtime of approximately five minutes, it would seem like it’s not a lot to go on but sometimes two songs is all you need to conjure a great deal of excitement. While brief, the tracks manage to seamlessly blend together ambient soundscapes, hints of shoegaze, a dash of post-rock and plenty of dreamy film sequences. “Theme Two” in particular creates a vast wash of sound that is extremely difficult not to put on constant repeat. Looking forward to more.

291: Straight Outta Nashville, Always

We almost missed putting this show out this week due to, ya know, LIFE stuff. A weekly podcast is a helluva thing to keep up with but it continues to blow my mind how quickly it is to find 15 songs of great new music to share. Nashville really is something special. Don’t ever forget that.
