Introducing Devalued with Mike & Caroline

Welcome to Devalued with Mike and Caroline; the place where we talk about art and money and how creative people are navigating the ever changing landscape to make a living for their work.

We started this podcast because as two creative people, we wanted to have the conversation in public that every creative person is having in private: How do I make it? What is ‘making it?’ Why bother creating anything at all? What is my work worth? Should I let the rest of the world define the value of my work?

This series is all about exploring these questions. Our intention is to give you a Roadmap, a Guide, and some encouragement to continue to live a creative life through open-hearted conversation with incredible people.

We’re going to be interviewing all types of creative people and we’ll be talking about all types of issues that creative people face.

We hope that you’ll get something out of it. We’re excited to have you join us along this journey. Welcome to Devalued.

Your hosts: Michael Ackley & Caroline Bowman

Total Wife – A Blip

Back in July of 2021, Total Wife released their self-titled record; which we got around to reviewing somewhat recently. Today, June 29th, 2022, the band released the official full-length follow-up, A Blip. In our prior review we expressed hesitancy that maintaining their level of excellence seemed like an impossible challenge but I’m happy to report we were entirely wrong. A Blip is an absolute powerhouse.

Comprised of ten tracks across 45 minutes, A Blip builds on the shoegaze foundations the band has proven to be more than adept at and introduces a myriad of new elements and styles. The EDM style drums on “It’s Violet” swirl through a cascade of feedback. Interlude “Not” fires off a wall of knob-turning distortion before transitioning into the euphoric and melancholy guitar swells of “Here.” Closing track “Hello” pounds relentlessly through a cloud of ever-layering vocals before giving way to a heavenly hypnotic refrain dashed with just the right amount of backwards guitar.

If that all sounds overly flowery, I make no apologies. A Blip is a beautiful record that combines a giant wall of guitars with intricate flourishes and patterns, a perfect recipe for my taste. Fans of Broadcast, My Bloody Valentine, and Gish era Smashing Pumpkins will find themselves at home here but won’t be steeped in recycled tropes; just a Venn diagram of familiarity.

A Blip is anything but. It is not fleeting nor temporary. It is an immersive listen best experienced at the highest volumes.

Beau Burnette – “Lean In” (Official Video)

The debut EP from Beau Burnette, Beau Jingles, is an impressive batch of jangly pop songs capped off by a pensive ballad. Listening through each song, there’s a myriad of delightful arrangements and little flourishes that require multiple listens to fully appreciate. Coupled with the release are DIY videos that either support the vibe of the song or veer completely sideways. For the purposes of this review, let’s have a look at the latter; the video for “Lean In” and the lead track from the EP.

The song itself is a moderately paced number backed by a mesmerizing bit of percussion (are those mouth clicks?) and plenty of starry twinkles. It is a pleasant track but not one you’d imagine as the backing to a Mortal Kombat style brawl. Fortunately for us, that’s exactly the direction Burnette took the video. Across the four and a half minutes, Burnette does battle with himself as Jesus, a deadbeat gambler, a mysterious raincoat man and a giant head (with additional surprises I won’t spoil here). The action is absurd but entirely entertaining throughout the duration.

According to an interview in Psychedelic Baby Magazine, Burnette was told the video would cost upwards of $10,000 to create – so he decided to teach himself some simple green screen and edit it himself. Clearly, the effort was worth it.

Beau Jingles is streaming on all the platforms and you can follow him on Instagram @thebeauburnetteshow. It’s a safe bet that he’ll be sharing more wonderfully hand-crafted entertainment in the future.

Träkál and the Mysteries of Patagonia with Sebastian Gomez

Hosts Mike and Kenneth bring in a very special guest all the way from Patagonia for a discussion about all things Träkál, a new and inspiring spirit category. Sebastian Gomez discusses his dream of creating a spirit that captures the essence of Patagonia and why he’s traveling the world and spreading the gospel. He goes over the local flora used in the distillation process and elaborates on why Patagonia is such a special place. Booze News goes off the rails careening from Rudy Giuliani, canned jack and coke, are Negroni drinkers the real heroes of evolution, and companies changing packaging for a lower carbon footprint. Also: how many pubs can one man visit in a 12 hour span? Listen to find out.

Behind the Sounds debuts with The Mad Genius, Namir Blade

For weeks now, teasers have been dropping over on Instagram for Behind the Sounds; an enigmatic new show being touted by the likes of AC Noel, Kadeem Phillips, Chuck Indigo, Jamiah, Milly Roze, Jay Monie, Brian Brown and Maya Fiasco… all before the first episode even debuted. In short, lots of hype from notable folks for the upcoming endeavor.

Fortunately, the wait is now over and the first episode is available on YouTube and streaming as a podcast. However you take your media, it’s there. Host Maya Fiasco sits down with Namir Blade to discuss his history of music making and partake in special live performances of “Stay” (from Aphelion’s Traveling Circus), “Angel”, and “The 28 Year Theory.” The entire episode is just under 30 minutes, hitting a real sweet spot of enjoyable content without pressing the attention span too hard.

Future episodes of the show will likely involve some of the names involved with hyping the series before it dropped. Maybe we’ll get an hour long chat with Brian Brown? Maybe Gee Slab will pop in and discuss how he chooses his beats? Maybe (hopefully) Daisha McBride will spin a tale or two. The possibilities are endless but the only way to know is to subscribe and keep up. Follow @watch.bts over on Instagram so you don’t miss out.

Little Shop of Horrors

Tongue-in-cheek meets heart-on-sleeve as Alex & Kelsey gush over 1986’s cameo-filled Little Shop of Horrors. Not long before ushering in what’s now known as the Disney Renaissance, Howard Ashman and Alan Menken helped legitimize New York’s burgeoning Off-Off Broadway scene at the WPA Theater with an unlikely musical adaptation of 1960’s low-budget B-movie The Little Shop of Horrors. The smart, satirical take on monster movies, musical theater itself, and even the Faust story ended up striking gold by looking outside the box of what musical theater could be and integrating elements of pop, rock, and R&B. Little Shop of Horrors is brilliantly directed by puppet juggernaut Frank Oz, with cameos from comedy legends like John Candy, Bill Murray, and Steve Martin. So step into a world that’s green— within your fence of real chain link— sit back on your plastic-covered furniture, and enjoy the fantasy.

Nashville Bandcamp Juneteenth 2022

Bandcamp Friday won’t be returning until September of 2022 but Bandcamp has a commitment to supporting the fight against racial inequality with a Juneteenth fundraiser every year. Specifically, this means…

On June 17, from midnight to midnight Pacific Time, we’ll hold our third annual Juneteenth fundraiser, where we donate 100% of our share of sales to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund to support their ongoing efforts to promote racial justice through litigation, advocacy, and public education.

So, during the entirety of June 17th, you can (and should) purchase from Bandcamp. You’ll be supporting artists and be supporting the NAACP Legal Defense Fund – which is an unbelievable resource for defending Black people in America.

If you’re looking to participate in this fundraiser, we highly suggest steering yourself over to the #Nashville tag for some broad discovery or check out this curated list of selections. It’s also embedded below (and it scrolls, so scroll it).

It can’t be stated enough that this is an opportunity to support artists (local artists, even) and contribute to an enormously powerful legal defense fund. You gotta do it, so go do it!

Dillon Watson – “Love Me Do”

Without making much of an effort, you’re likely familiar with the works of Dillon Watson. By my estimation, he’s been making music in the Nashville area for well over a decade and every endeavor he’s been involved with has been a worthwhile listen (to say the least). The Kindergarten Circus were a young band that kept the energy at Full Sweat levels, D. Watusi‘s Dark Party ranks among my Top 10 of All Time Nashville records and Savoy Motel always brings some funky, squishy good times. Watson was a primary member in each undertaking.

To add to that list of Top Notch Enjoyables, Watson recently released his first solo single under his own name, “Love Me Do.” The song credits cite notable names Jake Davis as producer, Jovan Quallo arranging horns, and I’m told Jamin Orrall (JEFF), Jack Lawrence (Raconteurs), and James Wallace (Skyway Man) are involved in the recording as well. Having a litany of talented friends involved makes for a nice enticement to tune in but the song itself is the real destination. Over the course of four minutes, “Love Me Do” unfurls from a languid pop song soaking in 70s keyboard twinkles into a horn-filled celebration with swirling guitars. Watson’s vocals manage to combine a hint of snarl with earnest sweetness as he calls out the titular refrain. Giving it a focused listen and you’ll hear bits and pieces of all the projects that came before it but evolved into a new form.

As the inaugural single, the future is wide open on what Watson might produce next. The digital b-side to the track gives us a hint of what may be headed our way (spoiler: it’s also great) but with Watson, the best plan of action is to just stay tuned and wait to hear what comes next. Given the track record, it’s gonna be good.

Catch Dillon Watson on Thursday, June 16th at Wilburn Street Tavern at 8PM. Free show and you’re bound to get an extra taste of what he’s been cooking up.
