Nordista Freeze – “Wysteria” (Acme Radio Live)

The catalog of performances from ACME Radio Live is a deep well of in-studio, low-key, performances from the likes of Daniella Mason, Molly Parden, Bantug and many, many, more. Finding an entry point can be difficult, so lemme recommend this performance of “Wysteria” from Nordista Freeze.

Nordista, if I may be so bold as to refer to them by first name, is known for a lively stage performance and lots of them, generally preferring to spend more days on the road than not. What could have been a mellowed out version of the latest single ends up being an emotional outpouring. It’s not dramatic by any means but it finds the perfect balance between playing fast and loose and absolutely crushing the harmonies. Nordista’s voice soars with just the tiniest crackle but it’s that lack of polish that makes it so damn appealing.

Frankly, the studio version is no different. It has more instrumentation and more layers to unpeel but the same melancholy-but-cathartic outpouring is there.

This performance serves as a great starting point to the catalog Acme Radio Live performances but you may just find yourself playing this one on repeat.

Introducing Ladyland

Very proud to announce the addition of a new show to the We Own This Town network of podcasts; Ladyland. Host Kim Baldwin is a social media consultant and blogger. On her blog, The Blonde Mule, she’s maintained a written Q&A series with a wide range of women around Nashville (and beyond) about their jobs, their hardships and their insights on succeeding. Now she’s taken that series and turned it into a podcast.

Robyn is also author of the book Activist Theology, which is a collection of stories about how they found their way as an activist, a theologian and a person living in this weird and unstable time. I canâ€™t say enough good things about Robyn and this conversation outside of the fact that I am stoked to be sharing it with you. It will change your perspective for the better and if your perspective is already changed in that way, it will just make you stoked to be a living, thinking person.

I also talk with Tristan Scroggins – a mandolinist and all around bluegrass wizard. He is also a columnist for No Depression, where he writes aboutâ€”among other thingsâ€”how strange it is to live life on the road as a traveling musician.

Eve Maret – “Pink Ray” (Official Video)

The rumors are true, Eve Maret has packed up and moved to Oakland, CA for further studies. While that would generally make any new music emanations ineligible for We Own This Town coverage, we can’t help but make an exception. As co-founder of Hyasynth House and progenitor of the most excellent No More Running, our cold hearts have softened to the rules.

With that in mind, we’re overjoyed and flattered to bring you the debut of the official music video for “Pink Ray“, the ninth track off of the Deluxe Edition of the aforementioned No More Running. As with the rest of the album, the choice of instrumentation that Maret employs quickly conjures a journey into the outer realms; a meditative journey into space. Were this paired with footage from 2001 or any blackhole sequence from your favorite sci-fi, you’d feel right at home.

Which is exactly what makes this official video so compelling, as these celestial sounds are paired with visuals grounded firmly here on terra firma. While the vocoded vocals express affirmations of embracing your true self and accepting love, a dancer free forms their way through a dead-end street, unleashing unbridled jumps and twirls along the way.

You could easily look at this and simply see a video of someone goofing around, a silly video of ballet moves in front of the occasional trash can. However, I implore you to drop your cynicism for a roughly five minutes and enjoy a song of love and acceptance and allowing yourself to be free. In other words, don’t just listen to the song, take its message to heart.

Sarah Souther is the creator of the Bang Candy Company, the sweets emporium responsible for bringing delicious homemade marshmallows to the mouths of Nashville. She grew up in Ireland, in a house where sugary treats were rarely allowed. After meeting and marrying a musician visiting from Tennessee, she soon found herself living in Nashville. In 2010 she began Bang Candy, and to the line of marvelous marshmallows she quickly added Sparkle Bark, CBD Dream Drops, and many varieties of Boozy Caramels.

On this episode of My Fantasy Funeral, Sarah and host Ryan Breegle discuss the magical night she first tasted a homemade marshmallow, why Kate Bush was her choice of party costume as an eight-year old, and her desire for a eulogy full of comedy and laughter.

Brown Bag Hip-Hop Festival

Marathon Music Works recently hosted The Underflow, a night of performances comprised entirely of local hip-hop acts. It was, unsurprisingly, a sold out success.

On Saturday, August 31st, The Cobra will host the first iteration of the Brown Bag Festival; a two-stage onslaught of local and regional hip-hop and DJ’s put together by Cold Lunch Recordings. If Marathon was able to sell out, I imagine The Cobra will be packed wall-to-wall.

All this is to say that it seems that Nashville hip-hop is finally starting to get some of its due. There’s never been a lack of talent in town, only a lack of visibility. Below are the announced artists playing at the first Brown Bag Fest which we are considering homework to familiarize ourselves with top to bottom:
