To celebrate Negroni Week 2021, we’re going back in the archives to our Negroni episode from 2020 in which we break down what makes this drink so enduring. Before that, Mike brings in Jonathan Howard from the Continental to discuss his “Negroni Experience,” debuting today at the side bar at the Continental. Jonathan will be serving up variations on Negroni’s, including one that has been aged inside of a coconut.

Mike is then joined by Kenneth Dedmon to discuss the many components in Campari (including what may be the key secret ingredient) and why a simple drink ends up being so complex. Pour yourself a Negroni and dive in with us. Season 4 premiere and “Books and Booze,” will debut soon!

Cold Lunch Recordings launches On Tape series

Cold Lunch Recordings has always been more than just a record label. It’s true that they do release a great deal of wonderful music – most recently from the likes of Rose Hotel, Volunteer Department and Full Mood – but that’s only a portion of what they’re up to. In the pre-COVID times, they booked a great deal of individual shows and put on festivals like Spewfest and Bobfest; with each iterance growing in scope and popularity along the way. In COVID times, they launched the “Live at Josh’s House” video series in which bands from Nashville and nearby were invited to play sets (at Josh’s house). Now they’re continuing to commit to that diversity of projects with the launch of another new video series entitled “On Tape.”

According to their Instagram post announcing the endeavor the series is exactly as it sounds, shows and performances captured On Tape. The first episode is available now in the form of Kent Osborne at The End, recorded September 4th, 2021 (along with Jhenetics and Jere Bennett). If you’re at all familiar with Osborne’s energy and style, it’s a perfect fit for the small, sweaty confines of The End. The full 20-minute set is an unrelenting outburst of deep bass, trap beats and intense vocal performances. The VHS tape desaturation and quality makes the performance feel timeless. If someone told you this was from 1997, you wouldn’t bat an eye with doubt.

Based on Osborne’s feed, it does seem like he’s primarily relocated to Los Angeles as his homebase but he clearly hasn’t forgotten Nashville as a hotbed of appreciation for what he does. Hopefully he continues to make his way back regularly as this performance is as unique as you could hope for.

There’s no telling what Cold Lunch will release next in the series but “On Tape” is off to a fiery start. Go subscribe on YouTube so you don’t miss it.

Our first guest and part of our team, Jenny Black, is a licensed marriage and family therapist who has just reached the other side of motherhood as both her children have left home. Naturally sheâ€™s got some pretty amazing things to share that sheâ€™s learned along the way.

Jenny Black is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in the State of Tennessee, the founder of Media Trauma Care and the author of Inner Technology: How to be Human in a Digital World. She is currently writing a new book, Our Digital Soul: Mental Health, Media Trauma and Our Relationship with the Digital World and is in production on a documentary about the same topic.

She specializes in training and education about how mental health is impacted by our use of media. She was selected to present a Media Trauma workshop at the 2019 AAMFT Annual Conference. She was featured on the nationally syndicated television show, â€œLifestyle Magazine.â€ Jenny’s other book is Unwritten Travels: an illustrated and guided journal for women. She has appeared on radio shows The Outer Limits of Inner Truth, Convergence Healing podcast, The Bright Side, The Human Voice and has been quoted in Real Simple, Fast Company and more.

Klypi & Buddy Crime – “When You’re Not Around”

Klypi is a self-described “queer pop artist” but that summary is far too short to capture the whole mystique. They’re also a mesmerizing performance and makeup artist, fashion designer and sometimes undefinable being. It’s important to keep all facets of Klypi in mind when diving into a new offering as this is not just your run-of-the-mill, ordinary, song drop.

The latest piece of the Klypi puzzle is “When You’re Not Around,” a collaborative track with equally intriguing performer Buddy Crime. The track evokes feelings of Devo or Art of Noise with a massive injection of energy. It’ll get you moving and those moves will likely be angular and robotic.

Klypi’s lyrical performance pairs with the track beautifully; it’s catchy, it’s fun and, if you’re paying attention, tells a story remarking on a vapid relationship. It’s no mistake that the cover art for the release features a blonde-wigged Klypi driving a muscle car; it’s the embodiment of the relationship at the heart of the lyrics; empty and materialistic.

The collaboration with Buddy Crime brings a new level of production to Klypi’s sound and cements their knack for crafting a story and character no matter what the source of the backing track comes from. That said, it’s a great fit and we’d welcome future collabs between the two.

It seems she may be moving to LA for a myriad of creative opportunities, so soak up this track while we can still call them from Nashville.

If you’ve somehow missed out on this phenomena for the past year, it’s a reserved date in which the music distribution site Bandcamp waives their fees and gives 100% of the proceeds back to the artists. It is, in short, a great way to support artists and we’ve written about it for many many many months.
