To-Go Records Halloween Comp

Days after we posted our Halloween spooktacular in 2021, a brand new compilation dropped from To-Go Records. It was unfortunate timing because the seven tracks included in the sampler are an excellent addition to any Halloween collection. Fortunately, music is timeless, so you’ve got plenty of time to enjoy this one through the end of this month and beyond.

Six of the seven tracks are from Nashville based bands with the seventh being a To-Go Records artist from Louisville. All told; very local so you know it’s up our alley. Bats, Ohphelia, Morgan, Impediment, Heaven Honey and Routine Caffeine take on covers of “Screamin’ Jay” Hawkins, Pixies, Queens of the Stone Age, Scooby Doo, Leon Payne, and Donovan respectively. Iven’s offering of “The Reaper is a Scary Guy” is partially a cover of Blue Oyster Cult but with somewhat altered lyrics.

It’s unclear if there will be a 2022 version of this compilation or not but based on the offerings contained here, we’d be very open to it being a yearly tradition.

324: Something That We Never Play

For the last few episodes we undertook a massive marathon of local music. I tried my best to go through everything in my backlog and get it shared on an episode. All told, we got 77 local tracks out into the world. Aside from the direct joy of getting to share so much diverse music made right here in Nashville, I also got myself a clean slate of things to share. I’m happy to report that slate is already rebuilding itself and I’ll have absolutely no problem sharing more goods as we move into the future.

This episode is evidence of that new slate rebuilding! Loads of great local music ready for your enjoyment. Dive in.

The Sazerac, Zombies and Getting Wicked with Abby Walters

The Liquid Gold gang finally tackle the original old-fashioned riff, a New Orleans classic called the Sazerac with Abby Walters from Standard Proof Whiskey in Nashville. They also discuss Abby’s dog business, “Furever Friends,” and give plenty of resources for anyone looking for a dog in Tennessee. Then Abby discusses the “Wicked Market,” happening on Halloween night at Love and Exile Bar, where the new Liquid Gold book “Cheer,” will debut. For Booze News, anchor Kenneth covers ZZ Top’s new whiskey, Metallica’s new cigar, two buck Chuck, and the nutritional value of Gordon Ramsay’s gin. Also discussed: Pumpkin-spiced whiskey sours, cocktail classes at Standard Proof, what makes a drink a “couch cocktail,” and the controversial “Saz-Tini” beverage. Bonus: a preview of the Zombie section in “Cheer: A Liquid Gold Holiday Drinking Guide.”

Mike Wolf’s new book Cheer: A Liquid Gold Holiday Drinking Guide is available for pre-order now! Pick up a copy ASAP!

Namir Blade – “Mephisto / Deep” (Official Video)

Namir Blade’s latest album Metropolis is a stunning effort; proving that Blade’s flow and musical compositions are uniquely his own. Aurally, it blends such a stunning myriad of influences it’s hard to comprehend (sci-fi meets string quartet meets break beats meets the intensely personal… see what I mean).

The album evokes many visual elements starting with the anime-esque dystopian cover art but Blade takes it even further with the video for “Mephisto / Deep” – two disparate tracks from the record paired together beautifully here. The video takes a minimum approach with maximum impact. For “Mephisto”, there are three setups: a silhouetted future traveler in a red room, Blade preparing for the day in a Victorian hotel room and cut-ins of a variety of faces lip-sync’ing to the tracks refrain. Written out, it’s not much of a video concept but it works incredibly well. The same goes for “Deep” – Blade set against a cool blue background giving a straight forward performance, as the edits warp and shift him through subtle effects.

Descriptions of music videos don’t do much to entice someone to view them but with Namir Blade, it’s captivating to see how little there is on the page and how magically it manifests. Metropolis is one of those no-brainer records that needs to be in your rotation and, if it isn’t already, you should let “Mephisto / Deep” be your gateway to changing that.

323: The Marathon is Over. The Marathon is Infinite.

If you’ve been listening for the past few episodes, you know I’ve been making good on a promise to clear the decks of my backlog of music. I think this episode will sufficiently satisfy that endeavor. This is the end of the marathon. That said, this episode is rather devoid of hip-hop and I really don’t love that. I make a conscious effort to be inclusive of all sorts of genres across Nashville and just hit a dearth of material for this one. If I’ve learned anything from this exercise it’s that I need to find a better way of sourcing music from outside my normal pipelines.

That one regret aside, I think this has been a really exciting undertaking. In one week this show released six episodes containing seventy-seven songs. If you count the episode released late last week, there’s a grand total of eighty-seven songs. All Nashville local music. That distinction is important because there are clearly a lot of people making music IN YOUR AREA; by listening to this show and learning more about something you like, you’re supporting someone that might just live up the street. That kind of connection can help to form communities and I think that’s something incredibly special.

This particular marathon may be over but, broadly speaking, the marathon of local music will never end. New artists will continue to put their works into the world and established artists will continue to build on their previous efforts, it’s just up to us to dip in and see what they’re up to. The marathon is infinite.

322: The Marathon Looms Large

Folks, we are deep inside a marathon experiment right now and I’m shocked at how it’s going! For months, I’ve been saying that I want to clear the decks on my backlog of music to share here on the show. We are getting extremely close to that finish line. On today’s episode, we’ve got twelve tracks of new music lined up – many of which are from names you’ve heard on the show before with a handful of brand new artists sprinkled in. This is the fifth episode in as many days and I’m shocked I was able to keep this up. Very close now and I hope everyone’s enjoyed the ride.

Nashville Bandcamp: October 2022

It’s Bandcamp Friday! If you’re somehow not aware, Bandcamp is a service where artists can post their creations and sell them directly to fans. It’s sort of like the old iTunes Music store but anyone can use it and the fees for every transaction are much more reasonable. On Bandcamp Friday, the service waives their fees and gives 100% of proceeds to the artists. This started during the pandemic as a way to give back and has grown into a monthly celebration opportunity to give a little something back.

In 2022, it may seem a little bizarre to purchase music because everyone streams their music! What you should keep in mind is that almost no one makes enough money from streaming to sustain themselves. Additionally, it costs money to post your music to the streaming services; a fee that usually has to be re-upped every year to keep the music available. Posting music to Bandcamp costs nothing and, today, requires no revenue share for the artists. You may have zero interest in owning MP3’s (fair enough) but maybe you can find it in your heart to support some musicians that you love what they’re doing and likely won’t be seeing them play live anytime soon.

Every Bandcamp Friday we post about some selections over on Twitter that are worthy of your dollars. It’s not a holistic list by any means but it’s a place to start. We’ll embed the list below as well, be sure to scroll through that and enjoy!

321: Deep Inside the Marathon

For months now, I’ve been saying that I have a deep back log of music to share with you all and I’m doing my best to try and make good on that promise. It’s a bit of an experiment here but we’ve been marathon’ing local tracks and it’s a wild ride. We’re deep in it now. For this episode, we’ve combed through the we own this town inbox and direct messages and put together a playlist of tracks from primarily new names. There’s some familiar names in here but largely this is a lot of brand new music!
