Does Anybody Make It Anymore? A Devalued Live Event!

TLDR: Thursday, December 15th at 5:30pm at Vinyl Tap – Lilly Hiatt & John P Strohm join a panel discussion for a live podcast recording. First drink free from Good People. See you there.

Devalued is our podcast dedicated to discussing the intersection of art and money. Hosts Michael Ackley and Caroline Bowman sit down with artists and creators to find out how can you make it in this day in age? What even is making it? They’ve chatted with the likes of Steve Albini, Kurt Wagner & Mary Mancini, Tristen & Liza Anne, Gee Slab & Namir Blade, Suzanne Cianni and more more to work through these questions. There’s no definitive answer but asking those questions is essential to figuring it all out.

Podcast episodes help to dig into these questions in-depth but we want to expand this conversation beyond the one-way transmission. To that end, we’re having our first Devalued Live event over at Vinyl Tap on Thurs, December 15th. Guests Lilly Hiatt and John P. Strohm (Rounder Records) will be joining for a talk about the topic Does Anybody Make It Anymore?

Aside from the crucial insights we’ll all again from their perspective, it’s an opportunity for anyone that is endeavoring as an artist to come together and meet one another. At the heart of any successful undertaking is community and we can all help to boost each other. So, come by and have a free drink from Good People, meet some other like-minded creatives and chat it all out!

See you there!

House O’ Lucy, feat. Mary Mancini

In episode 1, host Mary Mancini interviewed Don and April Kendall of House O’ Pain to get their personal stories and talk about the origin of the Lucy’s/House O’ Pain collaboration. Then Don and April wanted to turn the tables and interview Mary, who resisted at first but is glad she finally agreed because, she said, “After 30 years of friendship we’re still learning new things about one another.”

Don adds: “Mary Mancini has done a wonderful job of sharing the stories of the kids and caretakers of Lucy’s, but what about Mary? We’ve known her forever, but have never heard her own story on how she came to be Lucy’s Record Shops’ heart and soul. We felt it was long past the time for her story to be told and we’re excited to share this episode with everyone!”

Nashville Bandcamp Friday: December 2022

It’s Bandcamp Friday! For every month that the music distribution service waives their fees and gives all proceeds to artists, we compile a list of potentially worthwhile releases on the service to check out. We’ve been doing this for quite awhile, so feel free to go back into the archives and peruse previous lists.

If you found yourself complaining about Spotify Wrapped and how streaming services pay a pittance to artists for all the streams they gather, now is your chance to make good. With Bandcamp Friday, your money goes directly to the artist and none of it is shared with the service. The rest of the year, Bandcamp is still an incredibly well balanced revenue share but today provides maximum impact. If you did not complain about Spotify Wrapped, you can still pick up some music. It’ll be available in your Bandcamp App so you can stream it or you can hoard it away on your external harddrive and listen to it in Winamp whenever you want.

As usual, we’ll post about some selections over on Twitter that are worthy of your dollars. It’s not a list of everything you should listen to by any means but it’s a place to start. We’ll embed the list below as well, be sure to scroll through that and enjoy!

331: Unraveling a Mystery

Many thanks to Patrick Orr from Crave On for appearing on the last episode. Really enjoyed that format and may embrace it more in the future. However, this week we’re going with out regular barrage of local music from a variety of genres. You’re bound to hear something you like. We end the show with a chat about a little mystery surrounding the artist flwr grl. I may be 100% wrong on this folks but it’s an amusing thought exercise.

Shots! Winter Beers and Barley Wine with Matt Leff of Rhizome Productions

Hosts Mike and Kenneth sit down with Matt Leff, founder of Rhizome Productions, ahead of the “Winter Warmer,” their annual beer festival in Germantown which kicks off Saturday, December 3rd from 11am – 4pm in Morgan Park. The trio discuss what makes a winter beer while tasting some special barrel-aged beers from Matt’s personal cellar. Matt shares insights on the changing world of craft beer, how climate change is affecting the lambic beers made in Belgium (which he’ll be featuring at the festival), Germantown’s beer-brewing roots in Nashville, and how he got a local brewery to put jelly doughnuts into a white stout. Also discussed: what barrel-aging does to beer and why a barley wine can get you turnt up real quick. Cheers to beer! This year’s Winter Warmer benefits the Oasis Center in Nashville, helping disadvantaged youth build bicycles that they get to keep.

Centripetal Force Records – My Body, ‘Tis Of Thee II

My Body, `Tis of Thee II is a sixteen song compilation record brought to you by Centripetal Force Records with all proceeds going to Shout Your Abortion, an organization dedicated to “normalizing abortion and elevating safe paths to access, regardless of legality.”

Unless you live in a cave (or are willfully ignorant) you should already know that the United States Supreme Court overturned the constitutional right to an abortion in June of 2022. This is an abhorrent change in US politics that results in a massive human rights issue; in some cases forcing women to face the decision between a life threatening pregnancy or prison time. If that sounds extreme, read up more.

Centripetal Force has compiled works from the likes of Eve Maret, Abstract Black, Total Wife, Ziona Riley, John Condit, and many more to provide awareness of the issue (should you still be living in the cave) and to raise money to help fund the Shout Your Abortion organization that will aid women in their plight to retain bodily independence. The music itself is an incredibly pleasing, exclusive, group of tracks that comes out strong with the Robbie Lynn Hunsinger track “RoeVWade22” providing some serious education on the abortion topic.

The music is a bonus as the real benefit is donating to the cause. The compilation will be released on Friday, December 2nd; a Bandcamp Friday in which the platform waives fees adnd thus, makes it possible for Centripetal Force to donate the maximum amount of funds back to SYA. Pick it up here and keep fighting the good fight.

To-Go Records – Compilation for Abortion Care TN

Abortion Care TN works to “remove barriers and increase access to reproductive and sexual health care including safe abortion care for all people.” If that doesn’t strike a chord with you in 2022, you’re living a willfully ignorant life. In June of this year the US Supreme Court removed federal protections for abortion care, overturning Roe v Wade. The dire consequences of that decision can not be understated and it’s now on all of us to work to support women in quest for bodily freedom.

One way you can help is by donating to organizations like Abortion Care TN. If you’re not the type to just flat out donate to an orgnaization, turn your gaze to this To-Go Records compilation featuring Total Wife, Molly Martin, Venus and the Flytraps, Abby Johnson and many more. The label put together this excellent roster of artists and tracks to raise awareness and money for the aforementioned Abortion Care TN organization.

It’s a no brainer folks; Support abortion care, support a local label, support local artists all in one fell swoop. Bonus: maximize your contribution by purchasing this on Friday, December 2nd when Bandcamp waives their platform fees.

For Liquid Gold’s annual Thanksgiving Spectacular, hosts Mike and Kenneth are joined by Chef Katie Coss from the Hulu show “Chefs vs. Wild.” Katie shares many of her Thanksgiving cooking secrets, from how to brine the bird to tips for making stock, and how to turn that stock into delicious gravy. She offers some helpful hints on making the most of brussels sprouts, and shares the lessons she learned on the way to becoming officially certified as a food safety expert. Cocktail Correspondent Jessica Backhus joins to read one of her sections from the new book, “Cheer,” in which she gives plenty of wine pairing options for your Thanksgiving table. Booze News sees Kenneth drift from the science of having a beer in the shower, Coors Light making nail polish, ordering a glass of milk on a date, did Bruce Lee die from drinking too much water, and how a man’s pancreas began to eat itself after drinking 12 straight energy drinks. Six One Tribe – Tribe Over Everything

Six One Tribe came on my radar back in 2021 with the release of The Soul in the Ville EP; a four track release that features a host of emcees – Corduroy Clemens, Trip God F’R F’R, Gee Slab, HB Mandella, Negro Justice, Riø Tøkyø, S-Wrap, 3van 6rey – and comes out of the gate swinging hard with relentlessly energy for the 16 minute runtime. It’s a helluva introduction to an impressive group of talent that has grown and morphed over the last year and a half into something even bigger and more impressive.

For the uninitiated, Six One Tribe is a collective of hip-hop talent from Nashville, TN that aims to create memorable music while propping up the community as a whole. There are approximately 16 “members” of the group at this time but they’ve been quick to note that “dozens” of other artists and creatives have contributed to the affair. All that is to say, it’s not about a membership card, it’s about creating a memorable body of work with as many people from the scene as they can wrangle. It’s difficult not to be aware of the group given that they’ve been on the cover of Nashville Scene, won Best Hip-Hop Group Single and were featured for Tribe Over Everything. For a group with a mission to raise awareness of Nashville’s hip-hop scene, they’re doing a helluva job already.

The mission of the group is undeniably admirable but there’s the obvious open question: does the full-length release, Tribe Over Everything, measure up to their goal? Spoiler alert: it does. Sonically, the production has improved tremendously since Soul in the Ville. No offense intended to that original release but there’s more headroom on the full-length that gives plenty of sonic space for the emcees and beats to shine tremendously. The album is dynamic as well; drifting between bouyant bangers, chilled out soundscapes and the occasional explosion of Soul-tinged party grooves. If you’re looking for an entry point, I advise starting with “Live in the Moment” (featuring Corduroy Clemens, Negro Justice and Ronni Raxx) as it embodies the diversity of styles, joyful vibes, personal insights and deep musicality that the project aims for.

The true strength of the album is the diversity of styles. “Black Mercedes” delivers an ominous beat mixed with hypnotic verses with a dash of humor. “Keys to the Kingdom” is a contemplative groovy track slathered in immerse vocal performances. “They On Notice” (the lead track) is confidently slick, creating an irresistible urge to bob along. “Is You Shittin’ Me?” is a blend of mischievous vocals and slow, deep, bass marching to a hilarious gang vocal chorus. “Grow Again” is absolutely berserk with energy. “Love Circle” is a melancholy, introspective, journey that instills some optimism as the album closes.

Just about every track on the record has something to catch your ear, ideally introducing you to some new emcees along the way and a peek at the landscape of Nashville hip-hop. That last bit is important to remember; Tribe Over Everything is an introduction to the group and our cities scene. It’s not holistic by any means but it serves as a calling card for folks to take notice that Nashville is a city that can’t be ignored when it comes to hip-hop. Just like the lead track says, Six One Tribe is putting the world on notice. Don’t miss it.
