Negro Justice & JustVibez – Art of the Craft

Negro Justice’s full-length debut Chosen Family was hailed as the 2022 Best Hip-Hop album from the Nashville Scene, championed as Record of the Week from WNXP and served to level up Negro Justice’s profile. Following that up could be a real pressure cooker; that’s why sophomore albums are known for being “slumps.” Fortunately, Art of the Craft avoids those pitfalls and continues the upward trend of Negro Justice. Producer JustVibez provides 15-tracks of diverse sound that showcase and augment what Negro Justice does best; rap.

On the title track, there’s a verse that caught me for a short pause:

“No disrespect to the mumble flow
Everything I say got intention
Trying to get to the mission
While you is on the couch like The Simpsons”

It’s an excellent example of the kind of nuanced writing that Negro Justice provides throughout the entire record. It manages to be boastful and full of bravado while simultaneously being respectful and a bit humble. It’s got pop culture references. It’s got a questionable reference to “mission” – is that his own personal goals or the physical Mission in San Francisco; a yearning to reach larger audiences? That’s just four lines from one song and lacks the context of the entire track around it; which requires even more introspection. These verses are enjoyable to spend time with; dissecting their layered meanings and intentions while also simply enjoying them for being catchy as hell.

Chosen Family was a calling card of highly personal hip-hop. Negro Justice did not shy away from songs about his father, his wife, his cousins and his extended, non-blood, family and the important role they play in his life. Art of the Craft doesn’t have as blatant of a lyrical theme but I’m here to tell you it does provide two distinct properties; a platform for Justice’s intensely clever and fun wordplay and an opportunity to stretch musically.

On the clever and fun wordplay front; you can pick any song on the album for an example. “HIM Bison” finds Negro Justice interacting with a sample of Raul Julia as Street Fighter character M. Bison; a nod to his background as a competitive gamer as well as an opportunity to boast. “All Star Special” is the biggest ear worm on the record; complete with a sing-song chorus for the praise of Waffle House. “Solar Flare” is an unrelenting onslaught of references from Donkey Kong to Akira to RIFD chips to Nashville music on the whole. “Get It Understood” is one of the more introspective tracks; allowing Negro Justice to rap about personal growth in a way that doesn’t feel corny in the slightest; no small feat.

Musically, the album pushes into plenty of new territory. “Nightcrawler / Daywalker” is ominous and driving forward at all times. “Brand New Truck” unfurls into a deranged party vibe; like Hunter S Thompson ogling at the bats that haunt him. “TheRealTrip” smacks of hard hitting drums and a yawning, funky, bass line. “Solar Flare” is a jazzy night out that transitions into the undeniably bouncy “All Star Special” via an anime sample. “No Drums” is a beautiful bed of orchestral strings. It’s a wild combination of sounds without ever feeling manic or incoherent.

Art of the Craft may not get as much coverage as Chosen Family simply for the fact that it’s the “follow up” – and, thus, the story of the album may not be as enticing. That’d be a mistake because there’s a ton to digest here that should be in your 2023 regular rotation.

Ziona Riley – “Ten New Pens” / “Texas Bodhisattva” [Premiere]

Ziona Riley has a wonderfully distinct vocal quality. When paired with a minimalistic acoustic backing, it can be downright devastating. Her 2019 EP Not Too Precious, captures this impact wonderfully. Our only complaint; it’s been four years since we’ve gotten new recorded tracks from Riley. It’s a good problem to have but we’ve worn these songs down in our regular rotation.

So, when we heard that she had captured some performances at the Tombolo Press Basement on a recent West Coast tour and wanted us to premiere them… we jumped at the chance. The songs – “Ten New Pens” and “Texas Bodhisattva” – are beautifully sparse. Riley’s acoustic picking is not the focus of either performance but should not be overlooked, as it creates a mesmerizing backdrop for her vocal performances. Both tracks are driven by the strength of Riley’s voice; which often puts forth a vibe of immense fragility and melancholy. It can be truly heartbreaking but that’s a strength, not a complaint.

Riley’s vocal timbre and the swirling guitar performance don’t require lyrical comprehension; they’re impactful simply as sounds. However, if you’re interested in receiving the full impact from both songs – be sure to pay attention to those words.

We’ve been fans of Ziona since the first notes of Not too Precious came into our ears and these two songs are an excellent confirmation that she is continuing to grow as an artist with even more confidence in everything she does. Our fingers are crossed that this is a sign of new recordings coming soon.

To learn more about these recordings; listen to our WOTT MUSIC episode with Ziona herself.

S02.E07: Hellraiser

The boys review and discuss Clive Barker’s 1987 film Hellraiser, starring Doug Bradley, Ashley Laurence, Clare Higgins and Andrew Robinson. The Lament Configuration, or the world’s deadliest Rubik’s Cube, is no match for “final girl” Kirsty! Not only does she send the Cenobites back to wherever they came from, but she outwits “Daddy” Frank in an epic showdown of survival. She doesn’t need a man, y’all!

340: An Incredible Tale from the Road with Ziona Riley

As you can tell from the title of this episode, we’ve got a special one! I am joined this episode by Ziona Riley; a musician that has captured my attention for some years now. I don’t recall how I heard it originally but the track “Bury This Heirloom” (off of her 2019 release, Not Too Precious) came into my life and it’s just an absolutely devastating piece of work. I mean that in a great way. Riley’s voice is unique and powerful, even when her music is sparse and delicate. And if that weren’t alluring enough, she’s also the bass player for the band Heinous Orca; a rawkous undertaking that feels like it lives on the opposite end of the spectrum from her personal work.

It’s that diversity that really drew me in. So, I invited her to put together a playlist of local artists that she enjoys and we just have a chat. She shares some great stories from her time touring, how she found her people in Nashville and and does a great job shouting out a load of artists in town you might not know. I’m biased but it’s really a delightful time.

And on top of ALL OF THAT, she also shared 2 brand new recordings that have yet to be heard by anyone! So, we get to have a fantastic chat with a local artist, get their insight on other local musicians AND play some new exclusive music from them.

S02.E06: A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge

The boys review and discuss Jack Sholder’s 1985 film A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge. Starring Robert Englund, Mark Patton, Kim Myers and Robert Rusler. Pelvic thrusts and kink clubs and towel snaps and sweaty boys in briefs, oh my! Whether it was intentional or not, this film is commonly referred to as the gayest horror film ever made. Is it, though? Ask our good friend (and talented artist) Clark, who weighs in on the conversation.

339: Collectively Crossed Fingers

If you’re a regular listener of the show you might be wondering – where the heck have we been?! It’s been over a month since our last episode and, frankly, that’s pretty unusual for this show. The reason for the absensce is pretty simple – my day job is working in tech and like a lot of the industry, the company I work for had a large number of layoffs earlier in the year. While my job specifically was not impacted, the people I work with were impacted and it’s caused a downstream effect on my availability. In other words, a bunch of folks I work with got fired and the amount of free time I have has dwindled to nothing. It’s not an EXCITING story to tell but it’s the truth.

But let’s not get mired down in the past. It’s unfortunate I haven’t been able to post a new episode in some time but we’re here now. Let’s hear some new music! This episode of the show is 15 tracks and really gets us back into the swing of things.

Slow Drinks with Danny Childs

As an early Spring rears its head in Tennessee and around the country, hosts Mike and Kenneth check in with forager, gardener, bartender and writer Danny Childs, a proponent of “Slow Drinks” in his home in New Jersey. Danny is putting the finishing touches on his first book and talks about what makes a slow drink, and how history plays into his approach to botanical beverages. They discuss Dandelion Mead, real Sassafras Root Beer, Ginger bugs and the natural way to make sodas, using ramps in cocktails, and the many unique evergreens Danny utilizes in the Northeast. Booze News sees Kenneth covering NA Marijuana Beer, Bill Gates buying into Heineken, Juvenile debuting some “Juvee Juice,” King Charles’ pairing of scotch cocktails and cheese eggs, and the black fungus permeating the area around Jack Daniels in Southern Tennessee.

Inksuit – Found Sound Sessions

Have you ever seen the Nine Inch Nails video for “Gave Up” from director Jon Reiss? It’s a live performance in the band’s studio space and you get quick glimpses of Marilyn Manson and Richard Patrick who were members of the band at the time. There’s also one of the best music video easter eggs tucked in there.

How about the video for New Order’s “The Perfect Kiss” directed by Jonathan Demme? It’s magnificently long at over 10 minutes for one song and showcases the band performing intimately in a studio space with some friends looking on.

What do either of those have to do with Inksuit’s four part Found Sound Sessions? For me, both serve as excellent touchstones of reference for the look and feel of the sessions. Inksuit is a relatively new band to the Nashville scene, bringing a sound that is a fascinating blend of catchy and dystopian, and seeing them perform together with no audience inside of a well-adorned home feels like an intimate peek inside of the creative process. In reality it’s a performance but the veneer of it all feels very much like a peek behind the curtain.

If you’re unfamiliar with the Found Sound Sessions, they’ve done a phenomenal job over the past few years capturing emerging bands in unexpected and well curated environments. After you’re done watching the Inksuit sessions, be sure to Like & Subscribe to the rest of their content. Then go pick up the Inksuit EP.
