Join us, won’t you?

Crease Reader – Lush Button

After the first two preview tracks from Crease Reader (“Full Sun Prism Blues” and “Paris Syndrome”) were posted it was a fairly safe bet that any forthcoming full-length album that followed would be interesting to say the least. With the release of their debut LP, Lush Button, we can finally say just how interesting that offering is.

Fortunately, the report back is all positive marks. The album manages to juggle a lot of different influences and styles in one package; a trick that many bands fumble with pulling off so gracefully. Across the gamut of tracks there’s sitar style guitar picking, some spaghetti western drum vibes, psychedelic soaring guitars, a dash of 60’s keyboards here and there and vocals that may hazily drift along or explode with an emphatic chorus behind them. None of that is to say that the album is all over the place; each of these pieces are perfectly fused together and never at odds with one another. It’s an album that rewards multiple listens, revealing addition layers and infectious vocal parts with each visitation.

The band celebrates the release of the record on Friday, Nov 30th at The Basement with Lasso Spells, Holy Mountain Top Removers and Andy Ferro.

Dara – “Don’t Wanna Cry”

The WOTT Music episode with Lance Conzett focused on Nashville’s Pop Scene. He did a great job of laying some basics and provided plenty of entry points to dive deeper into the scene. In an attempt to follow along with that good work, here’s the latest from Dara – “Don’t Wanna Cry.”

The single is, without a doubt, of the ballad type; overflowing with heartache and a sincerely mournful delivery. There’s plenty of nods to 80’s instrumentation and production throughout but it’s balanced nicely with more modern expectations. This is exactly the kind of track that you’d blast at high volumes while balling your eyes out over an ex-lover.

The accompanying video, directed by Casey Pierce, is a visual treat cutting between slow panning soft palettes and highly filtered glitch effects. On paper it would sound insane but in execution, it’s mesmerizing.

We openly embrace our ignorance on the POP scene here in Nashville. Dara is yet another entry point into finding more quality music from a genre that our city isn’t known for but, clearly, can pull off with great results.

Joanna? Elizabeth? Joanna?

In this episode, the guys kick things off by discussing a few aspects of the Bill & Ted Universe that haven’t aged so well. After the airing of grievances, they partake in a refreshing interview with 80’s icon Diane Franklin to discuss her career, filming Excellent Adventure, and how a college exam ushered in an age of curly hair.

Peachy – “Fetish” (Official Video)

You may have likely already caught this Peachy music video premiere for “Fetish” over on The Cream. If so, watch it again. If not, now is your time to partake in one of the finer releases of 2018.

Taken from their debut album Squirt, “Fetish” contains all the punk-y fun of the rest of the record and maintains the liberated lyrics heard in the more directly confrontational tracks like “Rich Boy.” The video depicts a devilish character transforming a group of women into subjected fetish items like balloon-sitters and food mashers with some light S&M and lingerie thrown in to boot. However, the lyrics directly undermine those visuals with the chant of “No, I don’t get turned on by the things you say about my body.”

Some great quotes on the song and the video from band member Leah Miller over on the aforementioned Cream article, so be sure to cruise that if you’re interested in hearing more about the creation and impetus behind the video directly from the creators.

Gen Z: They Should All Carry Knives

Celebrities like Zendaya, Yara Shahidi and Amandala Stenberg represent the socially conscious, brand-wary, gender fluid generation known as Gen Z. Fortunately, like every generation, there’s a gamut of personalities to dissect in that cohort and they’re not all good. From the questionable Lil Xan to the stunningly boring Shaun Mendes to the mesmerizing Ezra Miller, there’s much to discuss.

A rousing new theme from Mike Shepherd kicks off Ashley and Jamie taking on the entirety of Gen Z. Insights are provided on everything from the awe-inspiring Emma Gonzalez & David Hogg, to the downright disgusting Post Malone, to the good hearted, pretty stupid, very confident Jaden Smith.

The Bag of Hotties steers away from the Gen Z chat by looking at The Golden Girls, Thomas Haden Church and Macca himself, Sir Paul McCartney.

Inaugural Neighborhood Dive Bar Tour

PART ONE of a multi-part series that we plan to revisit from time to time: the best of Neighborhood Bars (also known as “Dive Bars” – if you’re feeling a bit derogatory).

In part one, hosts Matt and Mickey bring producer Michael Eades along to visit neighborhood bars in the often neglected South Nashville and Woodbine area. Five bars were selected to judge against one another to discover out which would emerge triumphant (in our opinion).

Selections include The Batter’s Box Bar & Grill, Melrose Billiards, Rosie’s Twin Kegs, Santa’s Pub and Tin Dog Tavern; all judged against the same criteria of Lighting, Smoke Levels, Cleanliness and Attraction to Locals. Ultimately, a clear winner is selected for the next round but every location came with plenty of enjoyable merit.

If you have suggestions for spots to check out, please reach out to @thisisthaplace on Twitter or Instagram.

Volume 121 with Lance Conzett

“All Bangers, No Bummers” – the tagline of Lance Conzett, our very special guest this episode. After reading his Nashville Scene piece, “A Look at Nashville’s Rising Tide of Pop Music“, we invited Lance to share some Pop Music discoveries (as well as some of his non-pop local favorites) and he delivered. The hour plus runtime of our time together is filled with insights, anecdotes and praise for our fine city. Lance is a rare breed of true Nashville native and it shows.

Not Your Choice, Jean-Luc with Larissa Maestro

Discussing the entirety of science fiction proved to be too much for one episode so Jamie, Ashley and Larissa stepped into a well timed wormhole to divide the conversation. This is Part Two of Sci-Fi Hotties with Larissa Maestro. Herein, the topic of TNG is finally tackled and cast members are pitted against one another. Is Worf preferred to his baby momma K’ehleyr? Is Data a better lover than Lore? Is Deanna Troi a role model for dark haired girls everywhere?

After TNG is put to rest, the Bag of Hotties yields a cornucopia of worthwhile topics including HAL 9000, Janelle Monae, MST3K’s Crow, Samantha Morton in Minority Report, Aeon Flux, Nibbler and the best version of Harrison Ford that ever was; Rick Deckard.
