This week we’re bringing the show back around to our fundamentals; a wide variety of local music for your enjoyment. The upside to ostensibly skipping a week between new release episodes is that we’ve got a huge pool to pull from. I’ve got 15 tracks lined up for you but quite an extensive backlog for the next episodes as well. Nashville music is a firehose and I’m happy to drink from it.

Denis Villeneuve: Prisoners

Welcome to Season 3 of Filmography Club! This season host Jason Caviness will be looking at the work of Denis Villeneuve – specifically his English language work.

Villeneuve is a Canadian director, producer and screenwriter. His directorial debut was the 1998 film August 32nd on Earth, which was followed by 2001’s Maelstrom, 2009’s Polytechnique, and then Incindies in 2010, with several short films in between. Between these four French language films he racked up an impressive number of accolades and awards which is where our season starts off – his first English language film, Prisoners.

Jason is joined on this inaugural journey by Madeleine Hicks; a Nashville-based writer, director, and performer. She is a highly collaborative, multimedia artist with a focus on theater and filmmaking. She is currently in production for her first feature film, Sunshine Girls, funded in part by the TN Arts Commission.

The One Where Everyone Cries

This episode contains sensitive topics and discussions.

Sarah, Joy and Shannon share the challenges of their week and the guilt that often follows. Shannon opens up about the unexpected pregnancy of her first daughter, a traumatic miscarriage, and her journey to reassessing her priorities and finding more balance in her life.

About Our Guest:
Shannon Ware is a business owner, entrepreneur coach, and Disney-loving Florida Transplant. She is mom to Elsie (9) and Maisie (5), wife to Benji, and official walking partner to her pit bull, Penny. Her passions include listening to podcasts about BravoTV, eating too much sour candy in one sitting, and spending all of her (non-existent) free time volunteering my organizational skills to various organizations around Nashville.

V to Z – “Daughters of Decay”

V to Z is the pseudonym of Joshua Moore; a staple of the Nashville & Murfreesboro rock scenes likely most known for his drum work in The Katies, Imagined Order, Bright Age, The Jane Shermans and Wax Fang. You’ve likely seen him play and it was likely bombastic. His work as V to Z is informed by decades of rhythmic explosions but decidedly more nuanced and fleshed out than just “drummer making solo music.”

The latest release from the project, “Daughters of Decay“, is a compelling tune that fits in perfectly with Fall / Halloween vibes. It’s a dash of spooky keyboards, a bit of haunting ambiance and a surprising amount of melancholy. It’s not a stretch to feel that parts of the track evoke the 1999 soundtrack for The Virgin Suicides by AIR, though Moore manages to twist and bend that mournful feeling into some much more doom and gloom as the track progresses.

Generally, V to Z tends to release a single song at a time. This may be due to time constraints, an abundance of ideas or a marketing technique. There’s no right way to release music but with “Daughters of Decay” it’s become clear that a larger compiled release would be a welcomed treat into this world. In the meantime, we’ll just play this one on repeat.

Your Halloween Soundtracks Are Here

For many, when the calendar switches over to October 1st the countdown clock begins for the festive night of Halloween. Others may not anticipate the big event with bated breath but there’s certainly a contingent that simply can’t wait for ghoulish festivities. We count ourselves among those that look forward to the devilish merriment, the snacks and turning an eye towards the creepier side of music.

On that last note, we’ve spent the last few years making sure to dedicate at least one episode of We Own This Town: Music as a soundtrack to your Halloween activities. This years compilation, Spooky, Scary & Ghoulish Delights, is now available wherever you like to stream podcasts.

Lisa Donovan: Our Lady of Perpetual Prose

For their first in-studio interview since February 2020, Mike and Kenneth are joined by award-winning writer, pastry chef, and buttermilk advocate Lisa Donovan. In a wide-ranging discussion, Lisa discusses her process for writing, her passion for restaurants, and her love of buttermilk. Also discussed: the emerging dining scene in early 2000’s Nashville, the power of ingredients in baking, and true to the show, her favorite booze to use while cooking.

This interview was conducted before Donovan was one of three writers recently awarded the 2021 M.F.K. Fisher Prize from Les Dames d’Escoffier International, recognizing excellence in print, broadcast and digital content that broadens peoples’ understanding of the intersection of food and culture. Mike and Lisa share a love of Fisher’s work and discuss her influence at length.

Booze News makes a triumphant return to the studio as Kenneth discusses everything from Nicolas Cage in Las Vegas, stealing beer from Nancy Pelosi, to how golden raisins and gin just might make you live longer.

New Bang – “Stoned God”

The rise of microgenres over the past decade has been a wonderfully intriguing process to witness. While the term itself has been around since the ’70s, their proliferation has really taken off thanks to services like Tumblr, Bandcamp, Spotify and their ilk before them; Real Player, Napster, et al. If you’ve ever heard the terms Vaporwave, Chillwave, Synthwave, Witch House, Seapunk, “Soundcloud Rapper” or even “Simpsons Wave” you are familiar with the phenomena. The latest contribution from New Bang makes me hopeful for the rise of a new microgenre; Tiki Beats.

The term “Tiki” tends to evoke images of Hawaii and 1950’s “exotica” artists like Martin Denny or even Don Ho, though the term itself has its actual origins in Māori culture, potentially being a name for the first man. Given the complex history, there’s certainly room for conversation about how the entire subculture could be deemed exploitative if not handled carefully. Fortunately, New Bang’s approach is a blend of many influences and cultures, never leaning too hard into one particular subset, borrowing equally from early exotica, traditional percussion styles and hip-hop breaks.

Like many microgenres, the ingredients may not sound sensible on paper but the results simply speak for themselves. “Stoned God” is the second single from the forthcoming full-length album Ultimate Tiki Beach Breaks and it stands to reason that if the entire record is as good as this one track, we may be on the precipice of the genre taking over the underground. The track has a warm production to it (likely from the samples pulled from vinyl), a hard hitting beat and just the right amount of levity thanks to the booming title exclamation. It’s immersive, it’s unique and, most importantly, it’s fun.
