Soda Fountain Lore and Techniques with Darcy O’Neil

Mike sits down with soda fountain historian, author, chemist and bartender Darcy O’Neil about his journey from the chemistry lab to the bar and back. Darcy discusses his products Acid Phosphate and Lactart – solutions from the gilded age of soda fountains – and how they can be used to craft tasty beverages.

Also discussed: hangover remedies, the crazy carbonation of early sodas, and O’Neil’s revival of the famed Abbott’s Bitters, which lead him to hunting through the rainforests of St. Croix. Kenneth chimes in with a Booze News anecdote about Lebron James switching from Coke to Pepsi. Raise a highly carbonated glass and tune in!

Getting it To Go

It’s a fresh slate for 2021! Matt and Michael talk about many of their positive To Go experiences with a myriad of restaurants in town. Topics include Cafe Roze and Mother’s Ruin bringing the heat for New Year’s Eve carryout, East Side Bahn Mi offering a load of new speciality sandwiches, Roberta’s Pizza pop-up being worth the wait and Zika being a new hidden gem if you know where to look on Instagram. They also dive into full endorsements for BeHive Deli and Toto’s BBQ Express; consistent and reliable To Go spots. Lastly, they say goodbye to Eastland Cafeclosing Jan 23rd – and thank them for their wonderful service to the Nashville restaurant scene.

We pop in some music recommendations for Cicadia Rhythm, Blake Mills Mutable Set and Styrofoam Winos “Stuck in a Musuem.”

Styrofoam Winos – “Stuck in a Museum”

Styrofoam Winos are a three piece outfit comprised of Joe Kenkel, Trevor Nikrant, and Lou Turner; all multi-instrumentalists in their own right and often with their own back catalog of solo material. Together they have been touted as an experimental and improvisational group, reading each other as they compose on the fly. They recently announced their debut, self-titled, full-length album and the first single, “Stuck in a Museum”, flies in the face of expectations.

The album itself isn’t due until February 12th, 2021 via Sophomore Lounge records but this initial single hints at a record that takes a much different tact than you’d assume would come from an experimental improve trio. It’s rapid fire tempo combined with amusingly absurdist lyrics make for an incredibly infectious pop song. The song itself may have been born from an improve session but this is a far cry from anything we’ve heard from them before. It’s an incredibly tight track that shows no wear after multiple listens.

One song is not enough to make full judgment on an album but Styrofoam Winos are coming out swinging with one helluva of first single, all but guaranteeing the full-length will contain countless surprises. Order your copy of the record over here and tune in to the band on Instagram for updates.

Heaven Honey – Live at Josh’s House

Cold Lunch Recordings is kicking off 2021 with a brand new video series called Live at Josh’s House. It is, as you might guess, a series of live sets filmed at Josh’s House (that’s Josh Whiteman for the curious).

The first episode premiered over at Melted Magazine and features a Heaven Honey performance. If you’ve been paying attention to We Own This Town for any amount of time, you know we’re committed fans of her dark, contemplative and assertive compositions.

The nearly 20-minute performance features stripped down versions of “Tomorrow I’ll Try”, “Relate To”, “Wanna Be Your Man”, “Kicks” and “Unfashionable” – many of which are brand new. The video is shot simply with just a handful of angles as the performance space is just a corner of a house draped with light decore. Despite the simple setting, Jordan Victoria (Heaven Honey herself) keeps things compelling with her unique vocal style and pointed delivery.

The inside scoop is that there will be plenty more of these performances in the coming months and Heaven Honey has set the bar for keeping it simple but captivating.

Who’s Gonna Remember Me Now?

Jordan was a blossoming singer songwriter who died in a car accident when she was just a teenager. Filmmaker Dycee Wildman thought Jordan was the coolest person she’d ever met and recently found a homemade CD of Jordan’s music under her bed. On this episode, we listen to those songs and talk about the continuing impact of their friendship.

Brunch and Laughs with Brad Sativa

This episode contains promotion for an event at Zanie’s Comedy Club. Please be cautious when attending indoor events in respect to the spread of COVID-19. We’re all adults here, so please use your judgment.

To start 2021, we come roaring out of the gate with two things you’re going to need: brunch and comedy. Mike begins by sharing a few of his favorite morning cocktails, while Jess chimes in with her Michelada recipe and a shoutout to El Tapatio.

Then Mike sits down with Nashville comedian, actor and writer Brad Sativa, whose “Brunch of Laughs” show continues at Zanie’s Comedy Club on Saturday January 16 at 2 pm. Brad discusses his new projects and his love for whiskey, including how he ended up the star of a bourbon commercial. Also discussed: being a comedian covering social issues and Nashville’s racist and progressive past, black-owned whiskey in Tennessee and Brad’s Sativa Mosa, his signature Jack Daniels and pineapple drink.

To close, Kenneth brings the Booze News, covering everything from the Supreme Court to The Rock making an energy drink.

Guilty Pleasures: Havens Help Us!

It’s 2021 and Larissa and Lauren fully support indulging in all your vices a bit- Romulan Ale, a Troi-sized chocolate sundae, and those Star Trek episodes that you KNOW aren’t very good but – gosh darn – you just love them. In this episode, the ladies each pick a guilty pleasure episode for different reasons. Larissa’s pick of VOY’s “Fair Haven” is all about Kathy finally getting some well-deserved action, which leads to an honest discussion about the romantic and sexual challenges of Voyager’s situation. Lauren nominates TNG’s “Haven” due to the glory that was season one’s art direction, everything from Armin Shimerman’s Pee-wee’s Playhouse Face-in-a-box appearance to an alien crew flying around in a Lisa Frank mood ring. We know we’re wrong, but it feels so right.

The Mute Group – “Father Figure / Airbag”

Note: The Mute Group released their debut album Sinister Hand on yk Records, curated and operated by the author of this post. There’s bias afoot.

Back in October 2020, The Mute Group participated in the Festival of Ghouls, a massive multi-day streaming event with a multitude of bands sharing videos and live performances. The band contributed a number of covers; including this brilliant combined dual cover of George Michael’s “Father Figure” and Radiohead’s “Airbag.” On the surface, it does not seem these two tracks would fit together so well but, based on the captured performance, they clearly do.

Previously, the band had released their video for “Rodney O,” which also served as the closing of the proverbial book on promotional efforts for their debut album, Sinister Hand. However, that chapter ending has signaled the beginning of a new one. This cover is not a part of any official album release but it’s a compelling contribution to the notion that they are far from done.
