Into the Vaults

Kathryn Edwards (founder, co-owner of DIY inspired venue DRKMTTR) goes into the vaults of her Bandcamp collection to share a healthy dose of weirdo dreampop, post-punk and plenty of genre-defying jams.

Louis Prince – “The Number Thirteen”

With hindsight, March of 2020 was probably one of the worst times to release a record in recent memory; especially as a Nashville musician. Not only was the whole planet grappling with the notion of a new novel coronavirus but, locally speaking, folks were reeling from the March tornado. As such, you might have missed the release of the Louis Prince full-length album, Thirteen as it rolled out on March 10th, 2020.

Fortunately, the promotion of the album has continued along in the interim and Prince has just released the official video for the semi-title track, “The Number Thirteen.” Created by animator Joel Plosz the piece is a delightful dose of chaos told through an adorable band of animals done in a dithered vintage style. You may not be quite old enough to have participated in the heyday of computer graphics done in this style but anyone’s that ever stared at a chart of Susan Kare icons or even just enjoyed a blast of Google Chrome’s Dino Runner will appreciate the style.

While the visual appeal of the entire 4:17 piece is undeniable, the song itself should not be overlooked. Lazy journalistic tendencies push me to compare it, favorably, to Luke Temple or Here We Go Magic but more eloquently put; it’s a unique combination of softly pattering drums, gorgeous falsetto and subtle flourishes of shimmering guitar. There is very little music being made in Nashville that comes close to this style and perfect execution.

If somehow the draw of the video and song weren’t enough, the whole thing is being presented in collaboration with Weak Coffee on Gallatin Rd as it’s own special coffee blend featuring Plosz’s art. It’s a Win, Win, Win situation with this one. Don’t miss it.

234: The Total Bangers Department

Every week this show proves the theory that Nashville’s local music scene is a rich and diverse tapestry of styles and genres that stretches well beyond the pigeonholed perceptions of Pop Country and Music Row. This week we may have managed to prove it even more than normal with tracks that hop between dark and psychedelic, breezily beautiful ambience, impassioned infectious pop, lofi R&B and loads more.

As always, there’s more music from every artist on this show to be enjoyed so be sure to follow Total Wife, The Gripsweats, Houston Kendrick, Louis Prince, Shvdowboy, Teddy Rose, Chino M. Dollaz, Yung Mush, MT Vice, Belly Fully of Stars and Lawndry directly for updates on their latest projects.

Soda Fountain Lore and Techniques with Darcy O’Neil

Mike sits down with soda fountain historian, author, chemist and bartender Darcy O’Neil about his journey from the chemistry lab to the bar and back. Darcy discusses his products Acid Phosphate and Lactart – solutions from the gilded age of soda fountains – and how they can be used to craft tasty beverages.

Also discussed: hangover remedies, the crazy carbonation of early sodas, and O’Neil’s revival of the famed Abbott’s Bitters, which lead him to hunting through the rainforests of St. Croix. Kenneth chimes in with a Booze News anecdote about Lebron James switching from Coke to Pepsi. Raise a highly carbonated glass and tune in!

Styrofoam Winos – “Stuck in a Museum”

Styrofoam Winos are a three piece outfit comprised of Joe Kenkel, Trevor Nikrant, and Lou Turner; all multi-instrumentalists in their own right and often with their own back catalog of solo material. Together they have been touted as an experimental and improvisational group, reading each other as they compose on the fly. They recently announced their debut, self-titled, full-length album and the first single, “Stuck in a Museum”, flies in the face of expectations.

The album itself isn’t due until February 12th, 2021 via Sophomore Lounge records but this initial single hints at a record that takes a much different tact than you’d assume would come from an experimental improve trio. It’s rapid fire tempo combined with amusingly absurdist lyrics make for an incredibly infectious pop song. The song itself may have been born from an improve session but this is a far cry from anything we’ve heard from them before. It’s an incredibly tight track that shows no wear after multiple listens.

One song is not enough to make full judgment on an album but Styrofoam Winos are coming out swinging with one helluva of first single, all but guaranteeing the full-length will contain countless surprises. Order your copy of the record over here and tune in to the band on Instagram for updates.

Heaven Honey – Live at Josh’s House

Cold Lunch Recordings is kicking off 2021 with a brand new video series called Live at Josh’s House. It is, as you might guess, a series of live sets filmed at Josh’s House (that’s Josh Whiteman for the curious).

The first episode premiered over at Melted Magazine and features a Heaven Honey performance. If you’ve been paying attention to We Own This Town for any amount of time, you know we’re committed fans of her dark, contemplative and assertive compositions.

The nearly 20-minute performance features stripped down versions of “Tomorrow I’ll Try”, “Relate To”, “Wanna Be Your Man”, “Kicks” and “Unfashionable” – many of which are brand new. The video is shot simply with just a handful of angles as the performance space is just a corner of a house draped with light decore. Despite the simple setting, Jordan Victoria (Heaven Honey herself) keeps things compelling with her unique vocal style and pointed delivery.

The inside scoop is that there will be plenty more of these performances in the coming months and Heaven Honey has set the bar for keeping it simple but captivating.

Heavy Hitters from the Underground

A lot of releases from last year, so if you didn’t read every Best Of List, don’t worry – neither did we! It’s a deeper dive into some great tracks you might have missed or might not have spent enough time with.

Who’s Gonna Remember Me Now?

Jordan was a blossoming singer songwriter who died in a car accident when she was just a teenager. Filmmaker Dycee Wildman thought Jordan was the coolest person she’d ever met and recently found a homemade CD of Jordan’s music under her bed. On this episode, we listen to those songs and talk about the continuing impact of their friendship.
