The Muse Won’t Pay Your Bills with Steve Albini

Today we talk with legendary recording engineer Steve Albini. He’s produced thousands of albums (including Nirvana, The Breeders, Pixies, PJ Harvey) and runs his Chicago studio Electrical Audio as a highly accessible destination. He also makes his own music in the band Shellac.

He’s made a living finding the balance between art and money; two entities that don’t have a natural relationship. He talks with Devalued about his beginnings in the punk community through the economics of being in a band. Albini is known for his frank opinions and they are most appreciated in this forum.

I Could Live in Hope – “Judas” [Premiere]

Travis Trevisan is sneakily prolific. His primary project Tape Deck Mountain unleashes a new full-length record of powerful shoe-gaze inspired tunes every few years. In between those albums, he may release a series of ambient compositions or an interactive sound composition at the airport. In between that, he releases a variety of recordings with his label Nineteen 98.

If that somehow weren’t enough, he also creates “political slowcore” under the moniker I Could Live in Hope. We’re excited to announce the official lyric video for the track “Judas” off of the forthcoming full-length record Anon due out November 4th. The track itself is reminiscent of Tape Deck Mountain’s shoegaze-y foundations but more withdrawn and pensive; simmering if you will. The video feels like an art installation, best for sitting with quietly, contemplatively and attentively as each panel draws your eye. Lyrically, Trevisan paints a macabre picture military servicemen; signing their lives away for an unknown reason, usually based on a lie. For the more conservative leaning this may be off-putting but, to borrow a Southern phrase, he ain’t wrong.

Trevisan’s output is impressive, particularly given that the quality level of each project never seems to suffer. He’s managed to find an excellent balance of both quantity and quality, which is usually impossible. I Could Live in Hope is setup to be a contemplative and reflective release lyrically coupled with some scorched Earth searing soundscapes. Looking forward to it.

Swampwater and The Florida Files with Byron Stithem from Proper Sake

Hosts Mike and Kenneth are joined by the “Toji with the Koji” himself, founder and saké master Byron Stithem of Proper Saké, to discuss the bizarre but true origins of the Swampwater cocktail. Created by overzealous marketing execs in the 1970’s southeast for the purpose of selling more Green Chartreuse to hard-partying states like Florida – and to compete with late 70’s heavy hitters like the Tequila Sunrise and the Harvey Wallbanger – the Swampwater is making a comeback thanks to inspired proprietors like Byron. He discusses his new taproom and tasting bar “Rice Vice,” why cold and highly carbonated sparkling water is so important to a great highball, and how he’s managed to use the chemical compounds in pineapple to inform his new version of the Swampwater at Proper Saké. Then the crew aptly devotes the rest of the episode to “The Florida Files,” Kenneth’s long-running booze news sidebar about all the strange things happening down in the sunshine state. Also discussed: what is koji, which styles of saké to look out for at your local bottle shop, and how much damage can a forklift do if you drive it straight through a liquor store.

12V Negative Earth Part II, feat. Travis Howell

Travis Howell started playing the drums because his dad told him he couldn’t. His first band, No Remorse, was the first metal band to grace the Lucy’s stage and the first and only to be mistaken for a neo-nazis. Sloppy, a punk-metal hybrid kind of thing, came next and then Adrenaline Hammer, which went on to become 12V. When 12V sold out Lucy’s, Travis realized a long-held dream.

Travis’ time at Lucy’s included seeing bands like Javachrist, Impetuous Doom, Teen Idols, and the Wesley Willis Experience (“Rock over London! Rock over Chicago!”), judging Green Day’s choices, and some bad behaviors. The last would lead to his decision to quit playing drums cold turkey. He didn’t touch a stick for 14 years. Then he went to church.

Jordan XX – “The Curse” [Premiere]

Jordan XX has been, in my opinion, one of the most fascinating hip-hop artists emerging from Nashville. That’s not to say there aren’t many intriguing artists in the genre coming from Music City but Jordan XX always manage to bring something markedly different. His 2022 EP LAND OF THE FREE is a swirl of sound, deeply embedded in ambient soundscapes and dark overtones. The standalone single “The Verse About Nothing” is a laid back groove with XX’s intimate and observation flow firmly entrenching the listener.

With that in mind, we are excited to announce the latest standalone single “The Curse.” The backing beat is a bopping bass, jazz-y snare and gentle Rhodes juxtaposed against Jordan XX’s endless flow ebbing and flowing through rising anxiety and laid back observation. It’s just barely over 2 minutes long but it manages to burrow in your brain despite the short runtime.

There’s no predicting what Jordan XX will bring to the table and that’s what makes him one to watch. His beat selection is always unique, his flow is decidedly his own and he’s not afraid to collaborate or try new styles. “The Curse” is yet another bit of evidence that you’ve got to be paying attention to Jordan XX.

12V Negative Earth Part I, feat. Joshua Toomey

Joshua Toomey has loved metal since he was a kid. He went to metal shows, played bass in metal bands ( including Primer 55 with his friend Bobby Burns), and is now host of Talk Toomey, a podcast dedicated to metal music and news.

Josh remembers his time in Nashville in the 90s well, selling out Lucy’s as a member of 12V Negative Earth, applying the DIY-punk ethos to playing and touring, and the miracle of living in a place where you could easily connect with people like Fred Coury of Cinderella, who would then record your band for free in a gigantic fancy-pants studio.

When Josh was a kid he wasn’t satisfied with just seeing his favorite bands play. He wanted to meet them and have real conversations. So before every show he went to, he would prepare questions and set out to find the band.

Thirty years later Josh would turn his natural curiosity and knack for crafting thought-provoking questions into over 400 episodes of content. Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax…you name the band, he’s interviewed them. And that was before he joined up with Knotfest and helped turn their festival website into a loud music news and journalism juggernaut.

Talk Toomey has been regularly hailed as a top show since the onset, being highlighted on sites like Blabbermouth, Brave Words, etc. Talk Toomey is released for music fans free every Thursday. Listen wherever you get your podcasts and at https://talk-toomey.simplecast.com.

Volunteer Department – “Make It Easy” [Premiere]

Extremely happy to share the brand new single from Volunteer Department from the forthcoming EP Clean Living, due out this Fall on Like You Mean It Records. With the releasee of “Make It Easy,”
Volunteer Department once again proves their keen ability to write a delicious melody filled with subversive commentary and just the right amount of snarling bite.

Previous singles like the righteous “Shitten” or spellbinding “Cows of Tomorrow” collab with Heaven Honey had already firmly entrenched our love for Oliver Hopkin’s songwriting style but “Make It Easy” takes a slightly different tact. While the most recent previous releases have been very clear in their outward spite towards their subject matter, this new track is more reserved, colder and, somehow, even more cutting. The accompanying press release for the track provides the necessary backdrop to truly appreciate it’s commentary.

“This song has such a passively bitter quality to it that I feel compelled to shed some light on the circumstance surrounding it’s creation. I’m not an inherently negative or aggressive person. I try to meet people where they stand but not all folks are like that. There was this man in my life for a few years who was a veritable alcoholic/narcissist and he would call me up and chew me out quite often when he was was feeling aggressive. I got really tired of that eventually, told him that respect was a two way street, and then wrote “Make it Easy” a week or so after my final interaction with him. So if anyone’s got some truth they need to lay on someone refusing to respect their boundaries then this song is for them.” -Volunteer Department

With the benefit of context, the song really lifts off as a laser focused fuck you. The juxtaposition of that impetus against the light arrangement and beautiful crescendo the track takes is exactly why we’re always excited when news of fresh Volunteer Department hits our inbox.

We don’t have the firm release date for the full EP release but this taste of the new works is more then enough to whet the appetite. There’s no telling what vibe it will take but we’re here for it.

Steel Wheels of Life feat. Dallas Thomas

Dallas Thomas picked up a guitar and became a prolific Lucy’s regular when he was just 14-years-old and barely able to lift his amp, playing with his friends in Fingerhutt, High Strung, Brown Cow, Little Monkey on a Stick, and Boobyhatch (to name just a few). And he was just getting started. After Lucy’s, Dallas, Erik Holcombe, John Roberson and Chris Fox formed the “satanic thrash rock juggernaut” that was Asschapel. For seven years Asschapel toured the Western world. They even made it to Bosnia using only a German map, where they met that country’s version of House O’ Pain’s Don Kendall. After the wild and bittersweet Asschapel ride, Dallas volunteered for a Hurricane Katrina relief organization which, sadly, left him disillusioned but, happily, helped him find his way back to playing music. For the next ten years Dallas would once again tour the world, this time with the experimental post-metal band Pelican. Now a father Dallas is exploring his hardcore roots as a member of READY FOR DEATH, a new band set to release their first record in December.

At the end of each interview I always ask if there is something we didn’t get to that the guest would like to talk about. Usually everyone says no. Dallas surprised me when he said yes. But I wasn’t surprised when what he wanted to talk about was his dad, Bill, who took supportive parenting to a whole new level.

READY FOR DEATH is a new Chicago-based death-thrash outfit made up of current and former members of Pelican, Racetraitor, Indecision, Annihilus, Luggage, Haggathorn, and Asschapel. Heavy metal veterans delivering breakneck beats, crushing tones, and dystopian realms. Debut self-titled LP out 12/9 on Translation Loss Records.
