We’re proud of the shows we produce and distribute but there’s a healthy dose of content being made by others worth hearing. With this series, we bring you some additional entertainment and education through more podcasts created right here in Nashville.

Music Citizens Series from WNXP

WNXP probably doesn’t need us to highlight anything they’re doing! If you’re reading this site, you’re already, likely, keenly aware of everything WNXP is up. However, this new series they are producing called Music Citizens just seemed too good to gloss over. The elevator pitch is simple: “a new podcast series about the people who make Nashville’s music industry work.” The first episode is an interview with Bruce Fitzpatrick, the 80-year old owner and operator of The End. Read that again – the 80-year old owner and operator. His story is intriguing to say the least.

The first episode in the new series drops June 20th, 2024 and there will be a launch party celebration at The End on June 21st, which just so happens to coincide with Fitzpatrick’s 81st birthday. Jason Ringenberg (Jason & the Scorchers), Pujol and Brennan Wedl are set to perform. You can read the full press release here but just go ahead and subscrive to WNXP Podcasts to be ready for when the episode drops.

Let’s Talk Ladies: Conversations Across Generations

One of the greatest benefits of the internet is that it eschews the gatekeepers to certain kinds of conversations. Sometimes that is a bad thing but, more often, it’s a great conduit to human connection and understanding. Let’s Talk Ladies is most certainly the latter – tackling conversations for women that are only discussed in private circles or hushed tones. Topics include everything from first sexual experiences, to the possible fallacy of facial creams, to frank discussions about periods (and menopause). If any of that makes you squirm, that’s kind of the point! The hosts of this show do a great job of making these topics more comfortable… and it’s Nashville based!

Murder on Music Row

The Tennessean has taken the dip into diversifying their offerings outside of regular reporting with this new podcast series Murder on Music Row. The eight part series covers the infamous, and unsolved, homicide of Kevin Hughes that happened in the literal streets of Music Row in 1989. The first episode is available for free in the podcast feed but it’s unclear if the additional episodes will be available without a Tennessean subscription. But, hey, that’s just another good reason to support some local journalism! Give the first episode a listen and then decide if you’re ready to subscribe to dive into more.

Be a Winner, Support I’m A Winner

Joy Todd, one of the hosts of The Mom Cult podcast, has kicked off a crowdfunding campaign to raise funds for an original short film entitled I’m a Winner. The impetus behind the film is wrapped up in the history of the podcast and Joy’s own journey into (and through) motherhood. Here’s a synopsis in her own words:

My name is Joy and welcome to this piece of my story. 12 years ago I became a mom and it rocked my world… just not quite in the way I expected. I felt like a failure. I felt angry, resentful, depressed, anxious, guilty and crazy because no one was talking about it. Journal entries about motherhood turned into a blog, which turned into a supportive mom group [The MomCult], which turned into The MomCult Podcast and eventually I found myself writing a script!

“I’m A Winner” is a dark comedy about a new mom whose idealized version of motherhood is rapidly crumbling under the weight of struggling to discern her own wants from her baby’s needs. Wracked with guilt but desperate for relief from breastfeeding, she makes a frantic run to the store for some baby formula. Unfortunately, with a fussy newborn, nothing is as simple as it should be, leading the audience through the comedic chaos and crushing isolation of early motherhood.

If you’re a parent of any kind, we recommend you listen to the discussions on The Mom Cult, as they cover this exact, strangely taboo, subject matter. Shining a light on the hardship of parenting can make it just a tiny bit easier. If you’re not a parent, you can still glean plenty of enjoyment and insight from listening in. These stories of hardship are applicable beyond just the act of parenting.

How’s that apply to a short film? Well, it’s evidence that Joy is well acquainted with these emotions and how to navigate them; often with humor and a bit of darkness. Partnering up with a solid team of Randa Newman as Director and Hope Karwoski as Producer, the team is well prepared to tackle the task of creating a successful short film.

Decoding The BlackSon

If you haven’t been paying attention to The Blackson over the last year or so, you’re missing out on some innovative release tactics, some compelling ambiguity and some great hip-hop.

Back in June of 2023, they unveiled an art show entitled “Do Something Important.” It’s a multimedia affair consisting of interconnected pieces on his social media, his website and the real world. It was, decidedly, not on streaming services.

In September, he launched the accompanying mixtape Do Something Important. Here, again, he did not post the audio in the usual places. You needed to put in a little work for it. Tho, to be fair, he did post the occasional YouTube treat, so the breadcrumbs were not impossible to find. The mixtape is now streaming. After months of making you work for it, now you can find the album in the usual spots. The reason for this seems to be that The Blackson – now referring to himself as “The Artist” – has moved on to the next immersive project.

The new project, much like the last, requires some investigation on your part. The instagram account for The Artist has been reset and new crumbs have been posted – leading you to the same destination as the previous project but with new content, FreeLunchIsImportant.com. It doesn’t require knowing a secret code or reading the source code of the site, you simply need to tap on things that aren’t labeled.

The only problem with undertakings of this nature is that explaining them ruins the experience for the visitor. There’s a temptation to add all the information here for you, possibly hidden behind white text on a white background, but then you’d never take the time to explore because the secret would be explained. The enjoyment of the process is the process. Doing the work and finding these things yourself adds a layer of enjoyment. In an era of music consumption that is entirely one directional – New Release Radar playlists, algorithms feeding you, radio stations serving up Hot New tracks – you may just benefit from doing a little investigation yourself, see what there is to find. The Artist is engaging us, why not engage right back?

Hah! No big reveals here! Like I said, just a temptation – it’s no fun to give you the answers. You must go seek them on your own.

Eve Maret – “My Power” (Official Video)

Electronic musician Eve Maret is an engimatic creator. On one release she may be channeling 80s dance pop. On another, droning meditation. On yet another, heartwrenching ambiance. In her latest, the standalone single and video for “My Power,” she channels yet another new side; empowered resistance.

Going back through her body of work, Maret’s compositions always stem from a personal place and never just a rote exercise in sound. However, with “My Power,” she has cranked up that intensity and leaves little room for ambiguity. The urgency of the music paired with the dominiatrix vibes and upfront lyrics require no second guessing – Do Not Fuck with Eve Maret.

To be clear, these are all compliments. Music should be personal. Music should be an expression of whatever your feeling; frustration, anger, vulnerability, et al. “My Power” may be the start of a new era for Maret. Sonically, there’s no telling where she’ll go but emotionally she’s clearly ready to not hold back.

Zook – Cicada Cymphonie

At the time of this publication, Nashville is literally buzzing with the sound of the cicada. Brood XIX is the population of buggies that emerges every 13-years and they are here in full force. The hypnotic sound they make is coming from the male of the species, seeking a mate. It is often, without question, deafening. Some folks are not a fan of this natural aural performance but Zook is clearly enjoying it; as he has woven their spell into his new 3-song, 22-minute, EP Cicada Cymphonie.

Zook’s usage of the cicada sound is non-obvious and particularly clever. The little beady-eyed buddies are most certainly sampled in these compositions but Zook has warped, morphed and weaved them into his psychedelic pop songs in such a way that you feel drawn into a cicada dreamscape, not simply a flurry of buggos.

Listening to the 13-minute title track I was impressed that I could not tell when the song ended and the real life cicada chorus around me began. The sounds outside my window were so expertly interwoven that you’d be a fool not to listen to this track outside, lying underneath the nearest cicada swarmed tree.
