394: Savor Every Drop

As the end of the year approaches, I can’t help but scramble to showcase even more local music. Forget the “Best Of” lists, just turn on the firehose of music and guzzle as much as you can. Savor every drop. There’s so much more to hear but here’s two hours of it to satiate you for a short while. Let this be your salve for holiday tunes, should you find yourself in need.

That’s Demiatrix on our cover.

Dadcult: Meet Them Where They Are with Frank Liddell

The gals were ecstatic to sit down with seasoned music producer and an effortless conversationalist, Frank Liddell. He reminisces about his days as a stepfather and father of 2 girls and his greatest regrets. We touch on the resilience of children and how grateful he is for the closeness they share as a family.

About our guest: Houston-born, Frank Liddell got his start as a song plugger at Bluewater Music, where he helped an eclectic group of songwriters that included Jim Lauderdale, Kim Richey, Chris Knight, Sandy Knox, and Al Anderson get memorable songs recorded by most of the great artists of the ‘90s. At Decca Records, he oversaw A&R for Gary Allen, Mark Chesnutt and Lee Ann Womack and began his production career with the self-titled Chris Knight album. Establishing Carnival Music Publishing in 1999, his roster has included Bruce Robison, Brent Cobb, Adam Wright, Scooter Carusoe, Troy Jones, Marla Cannon, Natalie Hemby, Mando Saenz, Gretchen Peters, Dustin Christensen, and Hailey Whitters. As well, Frank has won multiple awards as a producer, having recorded records on Miranda Lambert, Lee Ann Womack, Chris Knight, Pistol Annies, Aubrie Sellers and David Nail. He also produced the acclaimed Not Fade Away: Remembering Buddy Holly, a Restoration, a salute to the songs of Bernie Taupin and Elton John. Currently, he is workingon projects by Adam Wright, Lee Ann Womack, Ian Noe, Johnny Dailey, and Parker McCollum. Liddell is married to Lee Ann and has two daughters, Aubrie Sellers and Anna Lise Liddell. He is an ACM board member who served as the music director for the annual Honors Awards program for several years. He is a former NARAS Nashville Chapter Governor and a former CMA board member.

Harper Mayo – “Hey Ollie!” [Premiere]

Harper Mayo is the portmanteau of Benjamin Harper and Laura Mayo – two talented Nashville folks with their own individual projects that sound great when they sign together. “Hey Ollie!” is only their third release in as many years but it’s a annual tradition we have come to look forward to. Today’s premiere is further evidence that a larger collection of works from these two would be a delight.

Releasing a track in December is a bold move given the general public’s focus on Best Of lists and Christmas music but, fortunately, “Hey Ollie!” comes in strong with enough power on its own to earn your focus from any outside distraction. The track is layered with rich harmonies, sharp gang vocals and too many flourishes to recount. There’s a great balance of of syrupy power pop and melancholy yearning pouring out of this one; a favorite combo here at We Own This Town.

While the track is musically quite gripping, it would be a mistake not to mention that it seems the lyrics are about Oliver Plunkett, a Catholic Archbishop that had a rather controversial life before his death in 1681. A life that resulted in being canonised as a Saint in 1975. Look, I’m not a religious person but if you can write a song about a Catholic Archibishop that’s that catchy and inspires reading a small tome of text about the exile, trial, execution and sainthood of a priest? Well, you definitely got something special going on there.

Let’s not let the Archibishop theory overshadow the music itself. The band has not told me what the song is about, I’m just pulling strings together based on lyrics and Google searches. What I know for certain is that spending time with Harper Mayo is time well spent.

Lawndry – The Day Has Almost Come

I have plenty of well-earned platitudes to direct towards Lawndry – as they have an impressive body of work that spans a variety of genres, styles and production styles. It’s well worth a deep dive but right now, your attention should be squarely focused on their latest holiday EP offering, The Day Has Almost Come.

As it is early December at the time of this publication the Internet is being flooded with holiday music; much of it overly saccharine, cringey or just blasé. Fortunately for us, Lawndry steers hard in the opposite direction. “Krautsmas” is an adorable ode to Kraftwerk and synthesizer, “My Eyes Are Always on the Moon” is a sweet and yearning ode to the season (that may also be a flirtatious letter to Santa.. you be the judge). “Palm Tree & Mistletoe” has a surprising tropical vibe mixed with a bit of the sinister that is somewhat wild to hear on a holiday EP but in the most refreshing way. “The Day is Almost Done” closes out the release with a heartwrenching dose of melancholy. It’s appropriate for the season but it packs a real emotional punch.

Original holiday music in a town full of songwriters is a recipe for the worst kind of music – desperate attempts at emotional connection that ring hollow and, even worse, are cloying to listen to. The Day Has Almost Come is nothing bad and everything good, even when it hurts the heart. It’s hard to imagine wanting more from a holiday release. When you’re done with this, go seek out prior releases, all of the holiday variety.

They are joined by guest Meghan Daum, author of “Selfish, Shallow, and Self-Absorbed: Sixteen Writers on the Decision Not to Have Kids.

Meghan Daum is the creator and host of The Unspeakable Podcast and the author of six books, most recently The Problem With Everything: My Journey Through The New Culture Wars, a New York Times Notable Book for 2019. 393: Style, Delivery, Diversity and Pleasing Surprises

In this installment of our show we put together 58 minutes of music across 18 tracks (plus some extra padding for babbling about the tracks). It is, yet again, a wildly enjoyable romp through pop/rock, indie rock, hip-hop, some brutal metal and a few other styles along the way. Not quite breakneck speed but a delicious variety awaits.

That’s Ronni Raxx on our cover.
