Despite the numerous female references in both their band name and album title, there’s nary a girl involved in this undertaking. However, don’t let that sway you – there’s plenty of enjoyable upbeat garage rock in here. I particularly enjoyed the back half of the EP.
ECHO – Error Prone 3,4
I am the first to admit that glitched out, experimental sound onslaughts such as this aren’t exactly pleasant to listen to but I just can’t help but appreciate that they exist at all within the Nashville music scene.Â
Maybe it’s patronizing and slightly indulging in the same narrative that the rest of the world believes but Nashville really is so much more than just Music Row. You may not love a single sound coming from Error Prone 3,4 but you gotta admit it’s great that we really do have this kind of diversity.
Tri Angles – ORBITALS
A vibrant mix of club bangers executed with 8-bit tools. It’s not a combination you hear very often but it’s fascinating when you do. It’s basically the soundtrack to the most intense NES game you’ve never played.
dream wave – Demonstrations
A collection of self-described “jazz rock†instrumentals to help you breeze more easily through the summer heat.Â
V to Z - “Show Your Brains†(feat. Ua!)
Another great track from V to Z in his monthly release series. This one features Ua lending some vocal talent.. there’s a Mike Patton-y vibe to the style but as a big fan of Mike Patton, that’s a giant compliment.
Zach Vinson “You’re the Oneâ€
Have you been yearning for more piano driven pop-rock music in your life? Zach Vinson delivers in spades with this track off his new EP How We Spend Our Days. The video also has lens flares that JJ Abrams himself would be jealous of.
Fable Cry “The Good Doctorâ€
YES! A million times YES. Theatrical sea shanty pirate rock embraced and performed to the most fully embraced degree. Do yourself a favor and go check out their Photo Gallery before listening to this because it really sets the stage. Is Man Man still around because these guys are an obvious opening act.
Quichenight – The Minor Sea
Another dose of great pop now available from Brett Rosenberg, aka Quichenight. The Minor Sea continues his exploration of lo-fi, vintage tinged, beachy good times with a dose of sarcasm and snarkiness. There is definitely a cleverness to his work and that holds true for this quality collection of new songs.
HOT TUB CLUB “Hey Wait… Shut Upâ€
I distinctly remember meeting Brandon Jazz and telling him that he was rock solid evidence that I was too old to understand what The Kids were into these days. I’m going to double back on that statement and claim that I still don’t fully grasp it but I get that this is just about having fun and creating an environment where others can do the same.
PANGS - “Already Dead†b/w “Whole Wide Worldâ€
This may be the first official release from PANGS and I’m quite curious to hear more. Catchy, female fronted, pop rock with plenty of energy and danceability. Oh, and it’s backed by a classic Wreckless Eric track – a cover that puts them in good company.
Photo Ops “Maybe We’ll Changeâ€
Big congrats to Photo Ops on two fronts:Â
1) the song “Maybe We’ll Change†is prominently featured in the trailer for the new Jemaine Clement movie People, Places, Things.Â
2) Jemaine himself tweeted out a link to buy the track – featuring artwork by We Own This Town favorite, Elizabeth Williams.
It’s a solid song (and not a bad looking movie). Congrats to Photo Ops!
The Alarms – Real Tough Love
The easiest classification of The Alarms is Rock Music. Lots of soaring choruses, jangly guitars, driving drum beats and flourishes mixed in throughout. It isn’t rough around the edges, it’s polished and perfected.  This isn’t meant as a fault to describe the band, it’s actually what helps set it apart. Even moreso  for me, is the tinge of optimism that runs throughout the more energetic numbers – a feeling I’m not always accustomed to.
