Sean Thompson’s Weird Ears is the amusing moniker for guitarist Sean Thompson’s solo endeavors. He’s been releasing music under this name since 2019’s Time Has Grown a Raspberry and continuing through 2020’s Weird Ears for Weird Times 2. He’s also an incredibly accomplished musician that has appeared on an innumerable amount of diverse albums from Spencer Cullum’s Coin Collection to Eve Maret to Promised Land Sound and even more live appearances that are beyond documentation. He has a penchant for the psychedelic that oozes out through intricate guitar performances that never feel oppressively noodle-y. All that is to say, he’s a busy guy and it’s exciting to learn that he’s releasing a new full-length record to be released by Curation Records in the not-so-distant future.
The first single, “Saturday Drive“, presents an unexpected dive into Classic Country sounds. Thompson’s signature guitar moves are front and center from the very start, backed by a rollicking western drum beat and plenty of pedal steel courtesy of Spencer Cullum. It’s an upbeat ditty about hitting the road with your dog; fitting that it calls back to the era of country music that was steeped in long haul truckers. Fortunately, it’s also not without an edge of psychedelic flavor that makes it definitively the work of Thompson.
If “Saturday Drive” is any indication of the full record (and we have it on good authority that it is), we look forward to more rumination’s of the good times, taking drives, playing music and generally enjoying being alive.
