Collaborative Performances Session 2
Hands Off Cuba + Megan Kelly (painter)
Square People + Drew Maynard (video) + Patrick Schlafer (painter)
The Zut Alors + Jonathan Lisenby (mixed-media)

Session 2 is Open Lot’s second installment of this truly impractical collaborative experiment. A musical scattershot of touring musicians is paired up with an equally diverse group of Nashville-based visual/performance artists. Each pairing communicates only by email until the collaborative performance at Open Lot. What results is an improvisation born from necessity: quick, simple, and forcefully unadulterated.

Lower Atlantis Gun Club

Jon Burr, of How I Became the Bomb, would like it to be known that he has joined forces with some friends (including top notch designer Austin Gray) to create a new collaborative blog known as the Lower Atlantis Gun Club. While the meat of the site will likely be a recurring sports-related podcast there will surely be musings on music, graphic novels, Free Masons and any such intriguing topics that run through the mind of Mr. Burr. Check out this snippet from the Manifesto:

For those exhausted by the bluster and hyperbole of other sports media outlets, our aim is to add a modicum of high brow humor and quasi-analysis. For those who feel they have no voice in this climate of anti-intellectualism and those that sob at their own gradual detachment from the state of modern sport, we say, “Welcome home.”

Epic intentions to say the least!

Elle Macho: Rock Band

As promotion for their upcoming EP, , Elle Macho is releasing a series of videos documenting their Popular Music Tour. In a Monkees-esque episodic venture the band explores different genres / looks to appeal to the masses; ultimately learning a hard lesson that the best band to be is just themselves.. Elle Macho. It’s cheesy, filled with bad acting and lots of poking fun at themselves but it’s also refreshing for those same reasons. They’ve already experienced Mod Night and now they’re taking on Rock Night. According to my sources at Tugboat I believe there are three more coming down the pipe over the next few weeks.

Semi Local Ardent Sessions

Oh No, Oh My - Royal Bangs

It’s a tiny bit of a stretch in terms of pure local relevancy but one could argue that both Oh No, Oh My and Royal Bangs have some serious ties to ole Music City. Respectively, one was based here for a hot minute and the other lives right up the road; not to mention being linked with Infinity Cat. So, all rationalizations aside, let it be known that both bands were involved in the latest offering from The Ardent Sessions. You can listen to an hour long set split between the two bands right here. Enjoy!

Locally Crafted Mixtapes

The music contained within might not be entirely of the local flavor but the craftsman behind them certainly are. Feel free to partake in these free mixes from some local artists.

The Zut Alors have released the second podcast in their ongoing series featuring music they are listening to, making themselves and having remixed of them. Looks like you can only get it via iTunes but who doesn’t have iTunes these days?

Keegan DeWitt writes a good bit of introspective, somewhat heartbreaking, music but when it comes to creating monthly mixes for his After Hours project he goes for the gold with the dance tracks. There are roughly 50 tracks contained here but a running time of 30 minutes. That’s alotta songs! Go download it.
