The Return of Self (For One Show at Least)

tl:dr versionSelf is back, playing a full band Benefit Show and teasing fans with a new music sampler.

Long winded version – I am, admittedly, a huge Self fan. However, it’s been a very long time since Self fans had any substantial news. A song here or there has been released or an acoustic show with friends.. all great treats but not harkening back to the days of ole quite enough. So, when this Benefit show at Exit/In was announced I was shocked. A full band – Matt Mahaffey, Mac Burrus, Chris James, Jason Rawlings, guests – set to take the stage at least this one more time. Oh, AND they released this sampler of new material hinting that there may be something larger looming on the horizon. I suggest you get tickets before they sell out because I’m pretty sure they will sell out.

Forget Cassettes – O Cursa II

Part Two of the three part “O Cursa” series of Forget Cassette series of EP’s is now available. While, musically, the EP continues down the same path as O Cursa I, deep into dark electronic based territory, it has some of that familiar aggression from previous Forget Cassette releases; particularly on “Lady Lazarus.” One thing is for sure, Forget Cassettes continues to bare emotions in a raw way without feeling pretentious or inauthentic. Sometimes music needs more of that.

Inscape / Rales

I am still digesting my thoughts on these so I thought I’d throw them out your way and see what, potentially, sticks.

The Inscape 7″ – a bit of bluesy, psychedelic, rock and roll. There’s a longer EP as well but the two song 7″ is a great place to start.

Rales – Demo – it’s unfortunate when I don’t have the proper words to describe some solid straight-ahead rock songs. There’s no gimmick here, just drums, bass, guitar, vocals and a song called Garfield.

Every step of the way, Echo Group has continuously impressed me. The debut of the Challtalk Record Collection EP trilogy was a refreshing bit of indie rock and they’ve not let me down since. I even had the opportunity to see them live and it was great. The compiled collection of the EP’s will be available as an album early next year but why wait? Go ahead and nab them all now.
