The infamous Queen + David Bowie cover does not seem like a likely target for brooding psych rockers All Them Witches but it works surprisingly well. I credit the particularly dark lyrical vibe to the song. Oddly, the ATW version is surprisingly short, a song factoid you’ve never heard applied to this band previously.
The Privates is a science fiction rock-and-roll comedy about the absurd frustrations and minor triumphs of an everyday rock band with a radioactive energy in their music they can’t control.
The above is the quick summary for a new Kickstarter movie project that draws its inspiration from the Nashville band of the same name. I don’t even know what to make of this but I’m certainly intrigued by it.Â
There’s a new Chrome Pony album on the horizon for Summer 2016 and “Ragged Child†is the first taste of what to expect. I gotta give it to them, they managed to work in a wailing saxophone solo that doesn’t sound hysterically out of place.Â
I don’t know if this should be considered a new direction for NORM or just some enjoyable dabblings from Dave Paulson himself but, whatever it is, it is delightful. Four tracks of beeps, bops and beep bops.Â
Despite my best efforts to slow it down, 2016 is hurdling along. This
edition of the podcast is comprised of many great releases from the end
of 2015. After this, I should be able to keep up with actual NEW
releases. Despite that, releases tend to fall through the cracks at the end of the year and I’d be willing to bet you haven’t spent enough time with these as you should have.

Today’s the day! After weeks of song previews and an entertaining music video debut, the second full-length album from The By Gods is now available. The nine song collection is not shy about its influences, decidedly 90′s rock. Not the industrial inspired rock of the 90′s ala Nine Inch Nails or the grotesquely soft rock ala late era Goo Goo Dolls but the kind of big riff, high energy, enjoyable rock akin to the likes of Pearl Jam, Toadies and early Weezer. That’s a lofty comparison to make but the influences are clear.Â
Personally, I am the first to grumble at the amount of praise we put on nostalgia. We see movies made from board games of our childhood or remakes coming out the wazoo because something familiar is more comfortable than something new. But that’s exactly what The By Gods manage to achieve without feeling derivative or stale. There’s a comfortable familiarity throughout the entire record but it’s like a band you loved got back together and their new album managed not to suck (which, let’s be real, it usually does).Â

Big week for The By Gods! They’re releasing their second full-length album, Get On Feelings, tomorrow (Friday the 22nd) and they’ve also released this hilariously gorey video for “The Stairs.†The band makes no qualms about having a decidedly 90′s sound and this video feels like a natural extension of that vibe. It harkens back to the time when videos were little mini movies, often with low budget effects, somewhat silly stories and a clear indication that the band involved was having FUN. Despite the bloody result at the end of this ambulance nightmare, you get the sensation that the band is enjoying themselves and the music is just an extension of that.Â
The first official EP from UZi is now available in limited edition cassette, CD and digital formats. If you want it digitally, be prepared to pay double – so why not help them clear out those physical versions and just buy the tape?
The four song EP is a nice dose of fuzzed out rock intermingling with some warbly guitars and dark overtones. Makes ya feel like a real bad ass.Â

It will be a good month before the entire Step Sisters EP is available but, for now, you can enjoy one track of big riff guitar rock that does that cool thing where the lead guitar is in your right ear only.
Really looking forward to the March 4th full-length from Lionlimb after hearing “Domino.†There’s a decidedly Elliott Smith vibe to the vocal delivery (to me) but that is an enjoyable compliment if ever there was one. It’s poppy with a heartfelt, cutting edge to it. I’m ready for more!
