Start your weekend off right with the blazing new track “Eye Sinks†from one of Murfreesboro’s finest psych rock bands, Mouth Reader. I can only hope this means a full-length lies in wait for us in 2018.
Tristen – “Crying on Christmas Dayâ€
Great to see Tristen keeping with her holiday tradition of releasing a new song in December. This years offering, “Crying on Christmas Dayâ€, is a somber number but well suited for a time of year where we reflect. This pushes melancholy to its limits, in the most pleasingly moving of ways.
All purchases of the track go to Doctors Without Borders, so you can do some good this Christmas with very little effort.

December is, historically, a time for reflecting on the year’s previous releases – a worthy practice if ever there was one. However, there’s still plenty of great recent releases that haven’t been highlighted on our show and that just simply will not stand. If the WOTT Music podcast is a time capsule of the great music our city has to offer, we’re going to forge ahead with documenting those releases. There may be a Best Of episode in our future but until 2017 has completely run out of steam, we’re going to keep highlighting newness.
- The Subnovas – I Cannot Stop
- Kim Logan – Ladyboy
- Joshua Morse – Demon Seed (Castlevania 3)
- Robyn Hitchcock -Time Coast
- Nightblonde – Let’s Go To Bed (The Cure)
- HARI – All My Darkest Dreams
- PANGS – VANISHING POINT
- Soccer Mommy – Inside Out
- Spodee Boy – Sweating
Vaporwave Christmas Story
Contemporary Tapes is a Nashville based label focused on highlighting releases from the experimental and vaporwave electronic genres. They’ve released albums from locals such as Palm Spring and Strange Æons but their latest release compiles songs from artists across the country to create a surprisingly pleasing, far-out Christmas album.
Typically, Vaporwave and Christmas would seem to be two ideas that would never work well together but this comp proves that theory 100% incorrect. Listening to “All I Want For Christmas Is You†or “The Scut Farkis Affair†it’s clear that there’s room for plenty of new styles in the Christmas genre.Â
While many of these artists are not Nashville based, Contemporary Tapes is from our fine city and serves as the mastermind behind bringing this all together. I applaud them for pulling it off.
Λ°C – “R&R”
Premiere: Λ°C – “R&Râ€
Hear the track on Soundcloud or Spotify.
Very pleased to premiere the latest single from Λ°C, aka Lambda Celsius, aka AC Carter. The title, “R&Râ€, usually evokes the phrase “Rest and Relaxation†but here the refrain is “Rhythm and Rhyme†– a lament about the stubbornness of the world around us and the difficulties of relationships. Â
Overall, the the electronic track twinkles with keyboard flourishes and a dancefloor beat calling back to the gothic vibes of 80′s predecessors, with the lyrical content digging deeper into the complexities of modern day.
It’s also being released on the same day as Patti Smith’s Horses album, back in 1975. This is no accident, as Λ°C draws inspiration and motivation from the likes of Smith and other empowered female musicians.Â
Tape Deck Mountain – Echo Chamber Blues
As everyone reflects on the Best of 2017, there’s plenty of good news about the future – particularly in regards to 2018 releases. Tape Deck Mountain just announced their next full-length, Echo Chamber Blues, will be released February 23rd and they’re taking pre-orders for the limited edition vinyl now.
If you aren’t familiar with the Nashville by way of New York by way of San Diego outfit, you may be missing out on some of the best shoegaze out there. I’ll save the full review for when the album is officially released but if you like big, reverb-y guitars, thick bass lines, foreboding samples and plenty of atmosphere, this will absolutely not disappoint.
Lionlimb – Tape Recorder
One of my favorite releases of 2016 was the oft-overlooked debut from Lionlimb, Shoo. The Elliott Smith-esque vocals and sublime production was always enjoyable. So, I’m excited to see that 2018 will see the second official release from the band in the form of the Tape Recorder EP. From the sound of the first available track, “Mariaâ€, the band is continuing with their previous sound but layering in a lot more instrumentation and even some strings to accent where necessary. Definitely one for the wishlist.
Peachtea – N. America
The debut EP from Peachtea is a collection of quiet pop diddies led with melancholy vocals. Overall, it’s a somber feeling and pairs well with these colder months, reflecting on the previous year. Be sure to hit up “Pt. 1″ and “Rio Bravo†– certainly the standout tracks in my meager opinion.
Steelism - “Linus and Lucyâ€
Keeping the holiday train rolling along is this brand new diddy from instrumental duo Steelism covering “Linus and Lucy†from A Charlie Brown Christmas soundtrack, originally performed by The Vince Guaraldi Trio. It’s a surprisingly soaring number, given the source material.Â
Various Artists – Indie for the Holidays
Tis the season for original and exclusive content! Amazon recently released this compilation, Indie for the Holidays, that features new recordings from local Jessica Lea Mayfield, JEFF the Brotherhood, Moon Taxi, and Langhorne Slim to name a few. The JLM song is actually a Loretta Lynn cover and the JEFF song is the most perfect JEFF Christmas song you could hope for.Â
It’s 3 hours of Christmas music that includes a bunch of other great artists like Coco Hames, Tennis, Albert Hammond Jr and The Lemon Twigs. Lots to hear with plenty of good local representation. Go listen!
David Argyle Thacker – The Mouth Trumpet Christmas Album
It’s December 1st, which means you have roughly 25 days to completely immerse yourself in the enjoyable ridiculousness of David Argyle Thacker’s Mouth Trumpet Christmas. It is exactly what it sounds like from the title and “Jingle Bells†has never been more delightful.Â
Thacker lives in New York now but we are indebted to him for creating this in Nashville so we can claim it as one of our own.Â
Reno Bo – “Smile Across the Universeâ€
There’s always something oddly familiar about a Reno Bo release. Maybe it’s his vocal style that feels like a late-era Beatles production or maybe its his artwork that gives a heavy nod to the simpler graphic design of the 60′s and 70′s or maybe its his simple, catchy, songwriting. Sometimes it can be a bit corny (i.e. calling this a Digital 45 single is a bit much) but if you like well produced pop songs, there’s no denying these offerings.Â
