NBN Discoveries: Fly Golden Eagle

I’ll be honest, I have seen Fly Golden Eagle before and I wasn’t all that into it. They played with Jensen Sportag some time ago and despite grand claims from Mercy Lounge Champion Drew Mischke, I just couldn’t get into it. Then I was told that the bands new EP, The Island Galaxy, was one of the better local releases of the year by DPR over at The Cream. So, with those recommendations in mind, I made sure to arrive on time for their NBN set.

Second chances often provide notable improvements and this is a prime example of that. Most importantly, the band was very engaging to the crowd – lots of banter, lots of amusing quips and lots of evidence that they enjoy what they’re doing. All too often bands look bored on stage or overly into what they’re performing, as if its a put-on for the crowd. I didn’t get that vibe from ole Fly Golden Eagle – they were into their catchy, dancey, spacey dance songs and really just want you to be as well.

The record is a bit more controlled than the performance but that’s often how it should be. You can snag the entire thing, for free, over on their site.
