The Southern Girls Rock and Roll Camp kicks off next week. (July 31^st – August 5^th) Remember when you were young and your parents sent you to some crappy camp with a fake Indian name? (kids today…)

SGRRC is exactly what it sounds like, instead of making ceramic ashtrays, these kids make zines and learn misfits songs:

“Do you remember the first time you played a power chord really loud? It’s a momentous thing to see happen. Watching these kids discover things like feedback and the “Bo Diddley” beat put’s things in perspective. By Saturday, when the showcase rolls around, there’s a palpable air of excitement and a level of conifdence that wasn’t there on Monday morning. The transformation is really incredible.

To be able to pass on the D.I.Y. tradition from one generation to the next is a pretty cool thing, too. I think any of the volunteers would say the same. Basically, SGRRC is the epitome of awesome.”
