The Full Deck Project

I’ll admit it; I slipped up. I failed to pay attention to the Family Tree Art Collective for just a tiny amount of time and missed out on a ton of new volumes being released in their Full Deck Project. Last time I dropped in they were on Volume 2, now they’re up to Volume 15. Or maybe it’s Volume 21.. it’s unclear if you compare the news to the Bandcamp just exactly what Volume they’re on but they’re way up there.

Long story short, if you’re a fan of acts like De Novo Dahl, Channing and Quinn, Paris, Ontario or into discovering new artists like Slow Claw, Jito Katawala or Lightning don’t hesitate in consuming all you can get over at the Full Deck Project.

If you guessed this was a side project from Tallest Trees – congratulations, you’re right! There are obviously some musical similarities between the two but that’s not a bad thing; especially if you’re a Tallest Trees fan as I happen to be. Whatever you make of the music you really can’t deny the appeal of a chocolate unicorn / T-Rex hybrid rearing up on its hind legs in front of a rainbow laser swirl. Absurd Cover Art of the Year?

I was going to do this whole writeup about how being in a “fun” band can lead to people writing you off because you’re probably just making music to assist in drinking a bunch of beer and have a blast at shows but that just seems obvious. Good choice Awesome Shirt, you’re doing the right thing (next time, just remember to put your music on Bandcamp a little sooner, this thing apparently came out last May? sheesh).

Maybe it’s my own ignorance but it seems that Nashville has a bit of a void when it comes to post-rock style quiet-to-loud Rock bands. Rarely do I encounter albums obviously influenced by the likes of Mogwai, My Bloody Valentine and their ilk while still restraining from going too far into screamo metal land. I suppose that’s why the live recording of s e v e n from n o i caught my ear so immediately.. it finds that balance perfectly. Granted, there is a little bit of that overly emphatic scream-singing going on but it augments the vibe of the music, rather than puts you out. And, bonus, most of the album is a free download!
