I had mentioned the forthcoming release from instrumental outfit Southern before and now it’s here. You’d think four tracks would be a quick listen but the rolling instrumental soundscapes last a healthy twenty-eight minutes. Instead of your typical tension-build-and-explode post-rock style the band chooses to enjoy the journey, rather than head for a specific destination (that sounds obtuse but, trust me, it works). From an emotional perspective, the music has an ominous and empty tone to it but never blatantly dark and in your face. It’s one of those records that fits perfectly into your day when you’re just waking up or when you’re just falling asleep.
