Alex Bleeker is the bass player for Jersey lo-fi upstarts Real Estate. If Alex Bleeker & the Freaks sound a lot like Real Estate, don’t be too surprised; the two bands’ lineups have a 75% overlap. The Freaks also include Real Estate frontman Martin Courtney IV and guitarist Matt Mondanile (aka Ducktails). The only Real Estate member who doesn’t do double-duty as a Freak, in fact, is drummer Etienne Pierre Duguay. Fellow Jersey lo-fi guy Julian Lynch rounds out the Freaks’ lineup. Flower Orgy, from Brooklyn, offer supremely damaged hippie folk. Both bands are touring together so we booked a double-bill in-store for ya!

I’ve been hearing about Robot Learn Love for a little over a year and a half now. Kyle Andrews has been working on it for even longer than that. Fortunately, the wait was worth it as the album is a well polished pop-rock piece of work. It seems rare to find an album that fuses big, danceable, beats with big, crunchy, guitars and still maintains a memorable chorus. There’s much hubbub about bands with a lo-fi sound making their way into the national spotlight (i.e. JEFF, Pujol, etc) but Andrews is the opposite side of the coin; bright, polished, produced but still every bit as likely to take off in a much bigger form.
