The following are music I’ve run across lately that either A) I have no business trying to write a full review about but would still like people to be aware of or B) is limited in quantity so it’s hard to make a full judgement call on. Either way, the following should be enjoyed:
Amerigo Gazaway creates a mash-up album of afrobeat Fela Kuti music and hip-hop pioneers De La Soul; the result is Fela Soul. Because of my ignorance in regards to both source material I can’t say how a purist would feel about it but, as a novice, I can say it’s a damn enjoyable listen. Released in September but new to me.
I think I first heard of DeathStarLoveBeam when they were set to play The Big Nashty. There’s only two tracks up on their Soundcloud but they are a great fusion of big rock riffs and spacey keyboard explorations. Great headphone listening.
Call It Anything has released a 19-track album meant to be played in totally random order called Choose Your Own Adventure. I’m not even sure how one would categorize this. My ignorance shines when listening to this. Is it a bizarre collection of weird sounds, samples, meandering song jams and ambient undertakings? Yes. While that may not be something I desire to listen to very often I can appreciate that it exists.

You likely know the work of Buddy Hughen, even if you don’t realize it. He was one of the principle members of Eureka Gold and has been touring with Tristen for who knows how long now (a long time). All that is to say, he’s a talented guy. He’s just announced his solo project Sharpneck and put two songs up for your aural review on his Facebook page. I’ve no details on when the full album will be released but, from the sounds of it, it will be worth the anticipatory wait.
