Self – “Looks and Money”
Self
“Looks and Money”
Available Digitally
There hasn’t been any regular output from Self since 2000’s Gizmodgery. Sure, there has been the occasional release over the years – the Shrek soundtrack song, the “Could You Love Me Now?” song and a few others here and there but it seems Mahaffey’s focus has been on other things (understandably so). So, when a new song hits the Internet it’s worth taking note of. It’s only a single song but when you’re a diehard Self fan looking for a fix, it will have to do. This particular ditty is “a distorto-diity about fast women.”

Coupler
Join us to celebrate the cassette-only release of Coupler’s “America In The Coming Age of Electronics” on the No Kings label. Coupler is the solo project of Mr. Ryan Norris, Grimey’s employee extraordinaire, and member of Hands Off Cuba, Lambchop, Kort, Doberman and Forrest Bride, who also performs with Lylas, Cortney Tidwell and others. Did we mention he was also a founding member of the late, great Character?

America in the Coming Age of Electronics
Physical Edition Sold Out, Digital Coming Soon
Ryan Norris is a man of many talents. He’s created works as part of Hands Off Cuba, Lambchop and countless others I won’t even attempt to list. His solo undertaking, Coupler, was recently released on No Kings and is already sold out of physical copies (I am told the digital version should be available very soon). The album is atmospheric, cinematic, a bit foreboding and absolutely engaging. Norris is playing at Grimey’s today, Nov. 29th, to celebrate the release of America in the Coming Age of Electronics and I suggest you check it out.. you might even be lucky enough to snag a copy of the album from him.

Happy Little Trees 7″
While it’s definitely fair to lament the demise of Hotpipes at least there’s some solace in the rise of Happy Little Trees; Dan Sommers latest project. It’s as catchy, poppy and rocking as the prior band and, bonus!, still putting out music. This Saturday, Dec 3rd, will be the official release party for the undertakings first 7″. You can hear the songs here but the actual physical product looks pretty great – limited edition of 100 glow-in-the-dark vinyl with hand made variations for the covers.
Going to the show gets you a free copy of the wax and exposure to two other up and coming bands – Frances Foundation (rock from Samantha Frances) and POLY (featuring Larissa Maestro). Saturday is full of choices but this is definitely one of the strongest contenders for your attendance.
