Night Beds

NIGHT BEDS – Monday, February 4th @ 6PM
Night Beds is the Nashville-based vehicle for Winston Yellen. After releasing 3 sparse EPs, Yellen lost a job and a girlfriend and spent a period living out of his car, eking out a living while on the road. He eventually returned to his adopted hometown of Nashville and, in a stroke of good fortune, he was able to rent a pre-civil war home in the woods that counts among its former owners none other than Johnny Cash and June Carter. “There are analogies here, if you care to draw them, with how Justin Vernon came to put together Bon Iver’s heartrending For Emma, Forever Ago. What’s more, both singers are in possession of uncommonly gorgeous voices, not to mention a gift for space and for atmosphere – for knowing when to let a song breathe.” –BBC. Night Beds is set to release its full-length debut “Country Sleep” on Feb. 5. Of first single “Ramona”, Pitchfork states: “Yellen yowls as a sighing guitar lead descends over a folk-rock thrum that honors his local roots before breaking into a billowy dream-pop coda.” Night Beds will perform at Grimey’s the day before and you’ll be able to buy the album early here at the in-store

I try to make WOTT focus on the contemporary side of music and stray from focusing on the classic heritage of classic tunes that have come from our fair city. However, sometimes you have to stop and take note.

First Generation Records has uploaded a ton of great work from a load of classic country artists. This Pete Drake album is one of my all time favorite things in the world. I suggest you start there.

ELK – Cocoon

Never heard of these guys before today but this EP is a pleasant way to spend your morning.

First Generation Records

CountryMusic.com – aka First Generation Records – has uploaded a ton of country classics to their Bandcamp acccount. Typically, I try to stray from mentioning much of anything having to do with country music in the realm of WOTT. The whole point of this blog is to showcase the diversity of our fair city outside of the country realm. However, sometimes it’s good to take a step back and recognize your roots. Real, legitimate, country music has its place and shouldn’t be pushed to the back corner just because of past 30 years of lame Music Row acts that typically come to mind.

Long story short, there’s some gold in here. Particularly this Pete Drake record that I don’t think I could ever listen to enough. Sadly, it doesn’t feature Forever but that’s the real beauty of these country music albums – they’re enjoyable by themselves but they can also lead you down a path to other goodness you might never have encountered.

Stumbled upon this EP from ELK while browsing around on Bandcamp and found it quite a pleasant listen on a cold wintery morning.

More Strange News coming to vinyl

wott_strangenews

James Wallace and The Naked Light will release More Strange News from Another Star on vinyl this April 30th, 2013. If you haven’t heard this record (or were fortunate enough to grab the limited edition tape release), you need to get on it and line up for the vinyl version. Very exciting news.

Holly Williams

HOLLY WILLIAMS – Saturday, February 2nd @ 3PM
Holly Williams is an acclaimed singer-songwriter who just happens to also be the granddaughter of Country music legend Hank Williams. She’s never tried to live up to the legacy of her grandfather or father, Hank Jr. Nor has she spent a lot of time trying to live it down. The respect that Holly has garnered as an artist over the course of many years spent building an international fan base, and the release of two acclaimed albums, 2004’s “The Ones We Never Knew” and 2009’s “Here With Me”, has come on her own terms, based on her own sound. Billboard said of her 2009 release, “it’s one of the best singer/songwriter albums to come out of Nashville.” Holly is ready to release her latest, “The Highway” on Feb. 5 but we’ve got her for a free, all ages in-store performance this Saturday so not only can you see this acclaimed artist for free but you can buy her new album early!
