Little blast from the past from Eastern Block – now known as The Lower Caves. Their original EP has been posted online and you can get the satisfaction that they knew the kind of dark rock they were going for right out of the gate.Â
Clear Plastic Masks – Outcast
Preview the first track off the forthcoming Clear Plastic Masks album, Being There, coming at ya May 6th via Serpents & Snakes.
Photo Ops – “Chameleons”
Phenomenal video for a track off of Photo Ops latest, How to Say Goodbye. Love the vibrant color changes and interwoven illustrations. It’s amazing when you can do a lot with a little. The song continues to carry that blend of pop song soaked in heartwrenching vocals that works so well.
Scale Model – Live It Up
The latest outpouring from Scale Model features cameos from Chris Crofton, Matt Mahaffey, a blossoming dance party and a call to arms to “Live it Up.” A band that plays a keytar and clear guitars is obviously well aware of their ridiculousness and this video just pushes that to the appropriate level!
Pale Pools – E P
The forthcoming Ponychase release show at the Basement includes Jasmin Kaset and a band I’d not heard of – Pale Pools. Turns out their debut EP is an excellent compliment to the sounds of Ponychase and a wise choice for their show. Â The three songs are awash in synths, electronic drums, ethereal vocals, a sense of melancholy and maybe something foreboding. An excellent mixture.
Financier – VOTech
Good to see Financier keeping up a regular release schedule with their dark tunes.Â
Magnolia Sons – Run! Baby! Run!
Another heavily soul infused burner from the Magnolia Sons gang. Love those horns.

Honey Locust – The Great Southern Brood
I’ve posted about it several times previously but the full-length album, The Great Southern Brood, from Honey Locust is now available. It’s filled with folky influences, sweeping strings and what I like to call Triumphant Melancholy. Also, the cover art features a cicada flying in moonlight – doesn’t that tell you all you need to know?
Ponychase – Parade of Youth preview
We’re closing in on the March 4th release date for the Ponychase full-length record, Parade of Youth, and they’ve been kind enough to post a teasing preview of what’s to come. Everything seems to be in order for some greatness – solid artwork, solid music and just enough anticipation time to whet your whistle. You can download the first single over on Bandcamp.
Gay Vibes – Karate All Day EP
New Gay Vibes? YES! New Gay Vibes being presented by Day Old Records? Double YES!Â
If you haven’t heard the previously released My Baby’s Got Worms you are robbing yourself of some serious goodness. Actually, if you haven’t heard all of the creations from Gay Vibes you’re robbing yourself. So get to it.
Toadies II – “Good Boy”
I love the frantic nature of this song. I may have even posted it before because the band name is SO good. I’d love to hear some more. They’ll be playing at Noa Noa tomorrow night, Feb 15th, for those interested.
