We Own This Town – Volume 64

It’s back! After uploading 63 previous episodes I felt inspired to make another installation. I mean, who ends on 63 iterations of something? It’s insanity. I wouldn’t call this a “Best Of” but it certain culls many of my favorites from the huge gap between episodes. Whatever it is, it’s 40 minutes of enjoyable Nashville music.

Litton Lions – War and Peace

Recorded in 2010 and released, now, the debut album from Litton Lions is a pleasant grouping of melancholy pop gems. The vocal stylings of Jerry Campbell are very distinct and a welcome return as I haven’t heard them around since the last Millionaire Magicians release. 

This release may just be a one-off but it’s seven great songs the world didn’t have previously.

Date Night – Rough Demo

Don’t do that to yourself Date Night. These three songs may not be as polished as your brain imagined but the rough-around-the-edges performance, visceral energy and enjoying-yourself feeling that comes from the recordings is really working. Maybe they are demo’s but let’s not call them rough.

Black Static Line – Enil

Though it’s self-described as ambient, the latest from Black Static Line, Enil, is much more immersive and captivating than such a label would lead you to believe. Ambience infers a general vibe or atmosphere created by a particular work – which is true here – but their longform soundscapes demand more attention than just a background feeling. There’s a serious shoegaze and post-rock vibe happening here, particularly with tracks like “Vendue." 

I can imagine seeing this live is ear-splitting loud and completely encompassing. Just how you should listen to the record, loud.

We Own This Town Archive now on Mixcloud.

Over the break I happily finished archiving all of the previous We Own This Town podcasts over to a Mixcloud account. You can now hear 63 installments of local rock, folk, electronic and other odds and ends ranging back to September 2005. Granted, there’s a little bit of a void after May 2013 but a good time capsule is a good time capsule.. and I’m confident this is a helluva time capsule.

The other upside to this is that I can’t end making podcasts on 63 – that’s just too odd of a number. Expect more!
