All Them Witches – A Sweet Release

I’ve been enjoying the dark “desert rock” style of All Them Witches for awhile now but releasing a new EP on 4/20 that contains an 11+ minute jam entitled “Interstate Bleach Party” may be the best move yet.

Volume 66

Even after sixty-six volumes of compiling Nashville area music I’ve never ceased to be amazed by the quality of goods coming from our fine city. Things may be changing in a lot of ways but don’t be fooled by anyone that tells you the music scene is going downhill, they just aren’t paying attention in the right places.

Mystery Twins “TV Talk”

What’s better than a dose of catchy garage rock? How about a dose of catchy garage rock with an animated cover? Yep, that’s better. Mystery Twins and Isle of Printing teamed up for this clever 7″ that manages to be both aurally entertaining and visually interesting. Watch the video and hear the explanation behind it – pick up the 7″ at any of our fine record stores around town.

Adam Landry – El Scorpion

You know what sucks? When music writers won’t write about music because it’s “been out too long.” For instance, if your music is 20+ years old – someone could unearth it and write up like some new gem to share with the world. Inversely, if your music is 10 days old, people will write about it as the Hot New Thing to be aware of. But what of the music that was released 3 years ago? It’s left to sit because it’s no longer “fresh” and not quite “vintaged” enough.

Screw that! Adam Landry’s El Scorpion was released in October of 2012 and I didn’t hear it until last week.  Landry is a producer that’s worked with the likes of Deer Tick, Nikki Lane, Diamond Rugs, Sallie Ford and the Way Outsiders and more but he’s clearly a musician in his own right with plenty of phenomenal ideas that he’s able to execute best.

Get on this.

PUJOL “June Bug”

Preview one of the tracks off of PUJOL’s forthcoming Record Store Day release, a 5″ lathe cut record. The b-side features Meth Dad performing “JAWWS.”

Listen to Turbo Fruits No Control

Though it won’t be officially released until the 20th of this month, you can listen to the entire new record from the Turbo Fruits over on SPIN. You can also catch them at The Basement this Saturday where I imagine they will tear your face off with rawkus versions of these more introspective songs. Should be a good time.

Jessie Baylin – Dark Place

This Saturday, April 11th, Jessie Baylin will play at 3rd and Lindsley to celebrate the release of her latest album, Dark Place. The album is a proper follow-up to her previous, personally loved, output, Little Spark, but pushes itself forward stylistically by incorporating a variety of styles every so subtle-y. The lead single, Creepers (Young Love), has some nice crunchy garage rock influence while other tracks give a nod towards Doo-Wop or even wide open ambient arrangements. Much of this variety is likely due to the collaboration on the album with producer Richard Swift, who also excels at blending upbeat pop styles with a heartwrenching underpinning of melancholy.

It’s a great album worthy of many accolades. Don’t miss the album or the performance – both will be fine additions to your life.
