City Limit Tapes – Nashville Hip-Hop

The final entry (for now) in the series of City Limit Tapes mixes exploring Nashville music. I know Nashville has a thriving hip-hop scene but I don’t find myself hearing too much of it outside of a handful of artists. Listening to this is a real education of the scene and I am thankful for it.

All and all, this series is just further proof that anyone that associates Nashville with Country music exclusively is simply embracing willful ignorance, as we clearly have so much more going on.

Forget Cassettes “Cold & Sparkling”

Another track from the Forget Cassettes compilation of demo records – Beth Demos, Vol I – has been released. I hear they’re closing in on being sold out of tapes, so if you haven’t pre-ordered yet you should do so soon!

Songs 2 Dance 2 “Swipe Right”

As you can likely tell from the band and song title, this is not to be taken too seriously. If you’re into the butt rock of Party Cannon and their ilk, I suspect this will be right up your alley. You know, people having stupid fun making music – nothin` wrong with that.

The Plastic Bags – Shredneck

The dulcet tones of grunge and stoner rock are alive and well, as well exhibited by the newest from The Plastic Bags. It’s a laid back, big riff undertaking with just the right amount of ‘catchy’ thrown in for the chorus. I highly suggest starting with “Legal Limit.”

City Limit Tapes – Nashville EDM

Clearly I enjoyed the previous two entries in the City Limit Tapes series exploring Nashville music but this mix (and the next) are particularly interesting as they are more foreign to me. EDM, as a genre, is not something that I really spend much time with but it’s great to see a tracklisting so long of artists emerging from the metro area doing great work in this style.

The By Gods “On the Radio”

Good news everyone! The By Gods have released the first track off their forthcoming January 22nd release, Get On Feelings. I’m going to go way out on a limb and predict it’s a collection of heavy hitting rock songs with a tendency to veer towards 90′s rock conventions while still feeling modern, relevant and enjoyable. Long story short, new song, go listen.

The Features “Connie”

Did you back the new Features album, Sunset Rock? Because if you did, you should have your digital copy of it by now and it’s a great listen. Feels like a bit of a throwback to The Beginning in many ways. If you did not, make haste and order the album and listen to “Connie” stat.

City Limit Tapes – Nashville (Indie Dance)

Another quality mix from Atlanta’s DJ Skarface exploring the non-Country, non-SingerSongwriter side of Nashville. This entry in his series takes on the Indie Dance realm with bits of tracks from Cherub, Wild Cub, DotCom, Jensen Sportag and a host of others.

JEFF the Brotherhood “Mary of Silence”

If I’m reading my press release correctly, the new JEFF the Brotherhood record, Global Chakra Rhythms, is released on November 13th. This first preview track, “Mary of Silence” is a nice bit of insight into the psychedelic vibe it contains. This is the JEFF I’m a big fan of – the more psychedelic, somewhat darker and foreboding JEFF that explodes into guitar shredding and zoning out. It’s often hard to believe this is the same band that occasionally sounds like a better Weezer.

City Limit Tapes – Nashville (Rock)

There’s a series of mix tapes (of which I will post all of over the next week) that showcases different acts from the Nashville area outside of the stereotypical assumption of what Nashville *sounds* like.

This is the same cause that We Own This Town has its eye on so I full support this endeavor. The big difference here being that this playlist is put together like a proper DJ mix – no full songs but full onslaught of energy from start to finish.
