Tho they are tagged as “indiesurf†there’s no debating that Kristoff Waltz is a POP band, through and through. The mid-tempo jaunts have a decidedly sanguine vibe, keeping you light and upbeat while the vocals have a lilt of hopeful optimism grounded in melancholy.Â
The Gills “Gimme Gimmeâ€
There’s a swaggering bravado to this first track off the forthcoming full-length from The Gills but they embrace it fully. And, let’s be honest, you can’t half ass swaggering bravado and have it be effective.Â
Cobwebs – Mark My Mark
I don’t know how I missed this one when it was released back in October but these goth-y pop songs from Cobwebs are great. I can’t help but think of The Cure or even New Order when it comes to the influences that helped shape these upbeat-yet-forelorn tracks but the sound is still distinctive to Cobwebs, not derivative.Â
Dave Paulson “Six Months in a Leaky Boat (Split Enz)â€
With just a few days left in this campaign to turn The Privates into a movie (sort of), all the stops are being pulled out. For instance, Dave Paulson posted this cover of the Split Enz classic “Six Months in a Leaky Boat†to Soundcloud to remind you that the campaign exists and that, frankly, you should contribute as soon as possible.
ELEL – “Let’s Dance†(David Bowie)
I’ll be honest, this cover of “Let’s Dance†is surprisingly subdued in comparison to what I expected an ELEL cover of “Let’s Dance†to sound. That being said, it’s a tasteful take on the song that builds quite nicely over time. Feels good to be surprised sometimes.
Music Band “Day Stealerâ€
Enjoy the first preview of Music Band’s full-length, Wake Up Laughing, due out April 1st on Infinity Cat.Â
All Them Witches “Open Passagewaysâ€
The official video for “Open Passageways†(off of Dying Surfer Meets His Maker) is a hand drawn journey of some alien protaganist, traveling through a dark world. It actually matches the overall vibe of All Them Witches incredibly well – it’s dark and foreign while being intimate and personal at the same time. It’s also a damn good song.

Take Back Life from Cancer
While 99% of posts here on We Own This Town are focused on new music and events around town, it is occasionally appropriate to step back and remember that our community is made up of people. And sometimes those people have cancer. Candice Ferguson is one such individual. She once worked at Grimey’s and currently supports her husband, Jeremy Ferguson, over at Battle Tapes Studio.
Her involvement and support in the music community is not the reason for this posting, though it does bear noting, but mostly this is about supporting someone in need to give them a better experience for the remainder of their time here.Â
Candice Ferguson, her daughter and her husband are wonderful people and deserve your support through this troubled time. They aren’t asking for it but the community has the chance to come together and support them. Don’t pass on this opportunity to give to a family in a terrible situation.Â
Much love to the Ferguson family and my best wishes to them through this endeavor.
The By Gods “Miss Itâ€
The newest video from Get On Feelings is actually one of my favorite tracks from the album. The desperation in the vocals is exactly what 15-year old me would have connected with back in the good ole grunge days. Oh, and the projection performance is pretty badass too.
POLY “Fishinâ€
The first full-length record from POLY is entitled Let’s Have an Adventure and will be released on March 26th; along with a record release celebration at Club Roar. You can listen to the first preview from the record, Fishin’, at the soundcloud above.
Full disclaimer: my label YK Records is responsible for both the POLY and Tower Defense record that was posted about earlier. Just because I’m involved doesn’t mean they aren’t good, it just means I’m biased.
Photo Ops “Memories That Glowâ€
When watching the new Photo Ops video you have two choices. One, lament the warmer days that are behind us and reflect upon the chilly present that we’re current imprisoned in. Two, use it as an excuse to get excited about the warmth and carefree days that lay ahead.
Yea, do that second one.
Tower Defense - “Historyâ€
Tower Defense have released the first preview track off their forthcoming EP, Stay Inside. The five-song undertaking will be available March 25th but, more importantly, it’s quite a barn burner. I’ve had a fondness for their previous album, Mind the Menagerie, for some time and this sounds like a promising followup.
