Be Your Own Pet

No, what BYOP does isn’t exactly the most original thing in the world– watch out for rampant Yeah Yeah Yeahs comparison– but they do it with a flair and panache and enthusiasm that belies their youth.

  • Stereogum has a link to the AOL Music stream of the album. I’d have to say, it’s pretty kick ass. But then again, I like punk rock…a lot.

  • Hate to rain on their unending parade but no thanks. Not my cup’o’jack.

    Wed June 7, 2006 at 1:42 am
  • Yeah I’m a little skeptical of that review… based on their other stuff, but I can’t say much until I actually hear the album.

    Wed June 7, 2006 at 8:01 am
  • I listened to the album on NME’s website a couple of month’s ago. I like this band a lot.

    Wed June 7, 2006 at 9:04 am
  • Open those Nashville doors, BYOP!!!!

    Wed June 7, 2006 at 11:58 am
  • i have to say that i’ve had the album a little while now and listen to it on a pretty regular basis. sure, there is ALOT of buzz and hype surrounding these kids, but the truth is they’re a talented group and one worth taking a look at. earlier songs i’ve heard from them didn’t catch me near as much as the new stuff. and really, seeing them live is where it’s at. go check out the pics!!

    Wed June 7, 2006 at 12:52 pm
  • i’ve heard the record, and it sounds pretty balls out awesome. pitchfork usually jacks everything it likes off, but this time it’s deserved.

    Wed June 7, 2006 at 3:15 pm
  • really im not saying that they arent talented or have a fun live show because they are and do. it is just their music type isnt my favorite and yeah the hype machine is a bit overwhelming.

  • by the way…has anyone notice “ben folds” comment on the old nashvillezine? weird, man.

    Wed June 7, 2006 at 3:25 pm
  • open those nashville doors, KOL!!!

there is a comment left by “ben folds” saying “shit…. i will take up the slack if you want to keep this thing up and running i will front the money.”

    Thu June 8, 2006 at 7:48 am
  • He’s talking about the (Todd-A) page you get when you go to http://www.nashvillezine.com

BTW, is anone else getting annoying popups when they post here?

    Thu June 8, 2006 at 3:01 pm
  • i dont get pop ups in firefox…?

    Thu June 8, 2006 at 3:12 pm
  • I never get popups on either firefox or IE. You might have adware or something. Try getting some popup blocking software.

    Fri June 9, 2006 at 7:27 am
  • In all fairness, Pitchfork isn’t as skewed as you might think. But they also gave Save Ferris a 9.5, so they’re still pretty retarded…

    Sat June 10, 2006 at 1:02 pm
  • I was getting the popups using Firefox on a Mac. It’s not happening anymore. I think it was another active window. It’s cool now.

    Mon June 12, 2006 at 9:36 am
  • too much porn carl…

also, BYOP are on Conan tommorow night (june 13th) w/ louis C.K.

    Mon June 12, 2006 at 5:56 pm
  • hey doug, thanks for the heads up on that! i can’t wait to see how nervous they are. haha!

    Mon June 12, 2006 at 9:32 pm
  • might have to make a mental note to see that.

    Mon June 12, 2006 at 10:45 pm
  • I may have to take a break from the porn to watch that!

    Tue June 13, 2006 at 9:37 am
  • 12:51…fuck, i missed it. : /

    Tue June 13, 2006 at 11:43 pm
  • According to Sam, it was a disaster…

    Wed June 14, 2006 at 9:19 am
  • really? nothing on youtube…what happened?

    Wed June 14, 2006 at 10:02 am
  • i thought they were about as good as any band i’ve seen on one of these types of shows in a while. jamin’s drums actually sounded good and his hihats sounded really good.

sure, there may have been a few snags here and there but that kind of energy is for the stage, not the television, so it doesn’t surprise me that it doesn’t necessarily translate well to everyone.

but, as for me, i thought they were great and loved seeing them on big time tv. i’m very very proud.

    Wed June 14, 2006 at 10:33 am
  • Dang, I forgot about it. Remember how Slipknot blew up after playing Conan? Oh yeah.

    Wed June 14, 2006 at 10:36 am
  • it was cool. jemina sported a new do. nathan and jamin had shaving cream covered faces. sure, they seemed nervous and, like jeremy said, its really hard to translate their energy on tv on some big empty stage. this was their first prime-time-big-deal tv appearence and i think that being considered they were fine. not anywhere near as good as seeing them up close, but still. the funny thing was when conan walked over after the song and they all immediately looked so small! it was great.

    Wed June 14, 2006 at 12:22 pm
  • i agree w/battletapes, the drums sounded so good. all in all, the performance did leave something to be desired, but it really did make me proud to see the kids on Conan…

by the way, has anybody seen their video for “Bicycle Bicycle…”? it’s fucking hilarious! i guess the thing that stands out to me about byoP is that they seem to have a lot of fun being kids. it’s great to see a Nashville band that’s doing well for themselves without taking everything so seriously.

    Wed June 14, 2006 at 3:41 pm
  • (before the retorts begin, i know there are dozens of great rock bands in town that are making great music without being too serious. etc etc…)

    Wed June 14, 2006 at 3:44 pm
  • i thought it was cool to actually see them trying. and i thought they sounded really good. but is jemina trying to look like the yeah yeah yeahs girl and is the guitarist trying to look like jack white? and why were they so weird to conan afterwards? that bothered me.
but i did think it was really cool to see such a punk band on conan. i cant remember any bands as interesting as byop playing on the show in a long time.
it was worth losing sleep to see.

    Wed June 14, 2006 at 4:16 pm
  • oh and they are playing with sonic youth tonight in philly so they are all over my philly blogs. seriously, all over them.

    Wed June 14, 2006 at 4:23 pm
  • they are? fuck.

    Wed June 14, 2006 at 9:13 pm
  • i saw them this past week at knitting factory and i’ll be honest – i really, really did not want to like them. i’ve been pretty anti-byop thus far.

their live show is pretty fantastic, though. i still don’t particularly like them, but i’ll stop hating them, at least.

    Wed June 14, 2006 at 11:33 pm
  • I really don’t understand why people pre-hate them. Why did you decide that you weren’t going to like them before having any sort of basis? Is it the whole deal where their parents are pretty connected? If so, get over it. I know if my parents could help me get records out, I would take advantage of it.

    Thu June 15, 2006 at 9:32 am
  • m@ has a point.. if his parents were connected i’d be the first to do his mother so that she would put my record out.

    Fri June 16, 2006 at 1:36 am
  • hm. i think they probably should’ve figured that if jemina did her usual show freakout thing without an actual audience, it’d look kind of awkward/stupid/drunk. and it might’ve done some good to have played an actual catchy song instead of whatever that was…”wildcat” or “damn damn leash” maybe.

    oh well, just my opinion…

    Fri June 16, 2006 at 7:48 am
  • it was the parents thing somewhat, but also i was really unimpressed with everything i’d heard by them beforehand. which left me thinking that was all it was; a lot of money putting them in high-profile places.

i didn’t care for “damn damn leash” at all, and yet at the show i heard the beginning of some song and thought “hey i like this”…. and it was “damn damn leash”. so i’m sort of won over.

    Fri June 16, 2006 at 8:55 am
  • I’m pretty sure Conan is taped in front of an audience, but I’m not too sure about this Catchy Song business. As best as I can determine, that was fucking awesome.

    Fri June 16, 2006 at 9:42 am
  • Wow, that was pretty surreal. I think they did a pretty good job. Here’s a better quality video

    Fri June 16, 2006 at 9:59 am
  • I forgot to mention– I’m very upset to see the bass player cut his hair :(

    Fri June 16, 2006 at 9:59 am
  • Sorry to all the haters, but byoP are very nice people who play challenging music. All this shit about “hate to rain on your parade, but I don’t like your record” is a waste of time. Who gives a shit if you don’t like the band?

ME: I hope this doesn’t spoil your breakfast, The Hold Steady, but I think your band is overrated.

THS: What? Who cares? Get out of my kitchen!

The news here isn’t “Universally Beloved Band Performs on Television,” it’s “Local Kids Make Good”.

    Fri June 16, 2006 at 11:20 am
  • don’t worry. nathan cuts the ‘fro fairly often and it grows back in no time. really, it’s ridiculous how fast. . .

    Fri June 16, 2006 at 11:24 am
  • m@: actual audience, smartypants; not a bunch of people sitting in bleachers 20 feet away. you know, dancing people.

sorry, i think i might actually like their music if i bought the album (like i said, the couple songs i’ve heard from there are pretty good), but that performance basically just seemed like, “and now…kids who make music in their garage!” there really didn’t seem to be anything distinctive or special about it. don’t think i’d like that song under any conditions, though.

    Fri June 16, 2006 at 3:07 pm
  • I’m much more interested in kids making music in their garage than sophisticated studio pop.

    Sat June 17, 2006 at 11:11 am
  • so am i. good music.

    the good is fucking key.

    Sat June 17, 2006 at 11:21 am
  • to mike:
im guessing your comment was pointed at me due to the “parade” referance.
this is the INTERNET. it is all a waste of time, full of opinions that nobody cares about. kinda like the real world.
and like i said before, byop is a fun band with some talented kids who just might be really nice people in real life…
that being said, i don’t care for their music. no need to get uppity, man.

    Sun June 18, 2006 at 11:36 pm
  • “referance”…looks like somebody is spending too much time with NemesisBoy.
