does anyone have one song to recommend from these guys that will get me into them? i’ve been having trouble.
Mon December 4, 2006 at 12:49 pmListen to “Coquelicot Asleep in the Poppies” (the entire album) with Caldwell…your life will never be the same.
Wed December 6, 2006 at 7:55 amAnything off The Sunlandic Twins is a good place to start. Maybe “Wraith Pinned to the Mist (And other games)”
Wed December 6, 2006 at 11:40 amI liked Satanic Panic in the Attic. I had never really liked the band before that album, and I haven’t liked much that they’ve done since.
Wed December 6, 2006 at 11:31 pmlisten to that song they did for the outback commerical. that is “cool”
Thu December 7, 2006 at 11:26 pmI own 5 Of Montreal albums. They are all quite different, but i love them all. In my opinion, these are the top song from each album (listed chronologically):
Spoonful of Sugar from Horse and Elephant Eatery
Let’s Do Everything For The First Time Forever from Coquelicot Asleep in The Poppies
Jennifer-Louise from Aldhils Arboretum
Lysergic Bliss from Satanic Panic In The Attic
Requiem for O.M.M.2 from Sunlandic Twins
So many other good songs to choose from, it’s hard to pick favorites. Each album sounds different, generally speaking the early stuff is more lo-fi, the newer is more electronic/dancy but not in a bad way. The guy (Kevin Barnes) is clearly a musical genius whether or not you agree with his taste or the direction he has recently taken. I suggest listening to those songs I recommended, find which one(s) you like the best, and purchase the corresponding album(s). If I could have just one, it would be Satanic Panic in the Attic. That is also a good one to start with because it is the most immediately gratifying. Coquelicot… is awesome, but it will take a while to grow on you because it is nuts and grandiose almost to the point of decadence, so I wouldn’t start with that one if you are impatient. Maybe if you get high with Tucker and Caldwell first, then it’s a different story.
Fri December 8, 2006 at 11:09 pmi remember hearing that and thinking it sounded like an OM song. was that really them? re-recording their song with outback lyrics…?
i don’t like it, nor the song from which it was spawned. “rapture rapes the muses” has a cool riff, though.
Sun December 10, 2006 at 1:35 pmNo, I don’t think that’s actually Kevin Barnes on the commercial. I think they just licensed the melody to the ad agency, and then they hired a studio/ad jingle band to record the tracks for the commercial.

Everything I’ve read made it seem like it was actually Of Montreal that did the recording. I could be wrong but that’s the impression I was put under.
Thu December 14, 2006 at 1:14 amall i know is, that australian guy’s voice is sweet.
