Willy T. drops in at Grimey's to share some tunes from his new full-length, Impossible Truth, with a packed house of friends. Here's "The Geography of Nowhere," inspired in part by a train trip across Turkey, as he explains above. Music starts at 1:50. He brought along three guitars, so I posted clips in which he used each one; fellow guitar nerds, if you like Sandy Bull, you're going to love this workout on the custom Tele! Tyler is a jaw-dropping solo guitarist, contributor to a slew of great bands like Lambchop and Silver Jews, a venue co-owner and label head, and an all-around nice guy. He also has an uncanny ability to talk about big things in his songs, without using a single word. As he explained in a feature interview with The Nashville Scene's Edd Hurt, the record's themes include the power that we assign to nostalgia, how "The Tyranny of Nostalgia" can have apocalyptic consequences, and the redeeming power of love - all presented in characteristic bemused, self-effacing fashion.

I took a ride around Nashville last Friday night, and this is what I saw. Field test with the Rode VideoMic into the Canon 60D. Big thanks to Jeremi Morris and Ben Wilkinson for the show recommendations! Uncle Skeleton at the Native Magazine August issue release party - My first time to see Uncle Skeleton will probably be my last, unfortunately; they're disbanding in the wake of their leader's move to NYC. However, all of the talented players featured above are part of other groups in town, so keep an ear out for that Hollywood orchestra sound wafting from a club near you. Quichenight at The End - Cassette release for the group's new record, Quichenight II. An artist cannot live by chops and cleverness alone, but Quichenight cooks up cool arrangements and fires off unusual licks in a way that I'd be proud to serve. Megajoos at The Zombie Shop - I usually cringe when I see someone who is not J. Mascis in front of a huge stack of amps. The dudes of Megajoos use the powers for good, though: the bassman's tone was far meatier than this recording represents. They keep it simple, but they don't let it get dull. I'm only bummed I put my camera away before "Always Turn It Up Way Too Loud." Roman Polanski's Baby at The Zombie Shop - Ever wonder what Kim Gordon's band might have sounded like pre-Thurston? Had to double-check the switch on my flux capacitor after this band.

While the intensity and guitar/bass/drum attack are constants, there are both beautiful and defiant moments, along with a newfound sense of vulnerability and knowingness in Coco's lyrics. Says Hames, "In general, I find this to be an album largely about women, my relationships with women and my perceptions of women; my meanest songs are about myself." The gorgeously melancholic vocal line of "The Worst There Is," with its spare arrangement and Coco's wistful lyric, "When you're the worst there is, There's nothing to fear," touches a nerve and has the feel of a lost '60s Marianne Faithful track. THE ETTES' musical peers have always been among the band's biggest supporters: the Black Keys' Dan Auerbach is recording a second 45" single, "The Girl I'll Never Be," with the band; look for it in summer 2011. Coco also formed a band with the Reigning Sound's Greg Cartwright, The Parting Gifts, whose album Strychnine Dandelion came out in 2010 and featured Jem on bass and The Greenhornes's Patrick Keeler on drums. Pitchfork said of the collaboration of Coco and Greg: "The Parting Gifts provide a Loretta to his [Cartwright's] Conway, a Nancy to his Lee," and the Guardian UK compared Coco's vocals on the album to Ronnie Spector. With Wicked Will, the ETTES have thrown down the rock gauntlet and they are daring you to pick it up. After a CD release show in Nashville, the band will kick off a national headlining tour with two NYC shows in the beginning of August, 2011. Three weeks before his "Blunderbuss" album hits the streets, Third Man Records decided to make the Jack White album track "Freedom at 21" premier exclusively via flexi-disc records attached to helium balloons launched from the label headquarters in Nashville on April 1st, 2012. Envisioned as an experiment exploring non-traditional forms of record distribution and a way to get records in the hands of people who don't visit record shops, the label was sure to use biodegradable latex balloons and all-natural twine in the process. Accompanying the balloons were custom post cards with instructions for the finders to submit photos, discovery location and the date on which the record was found, all of which will be incorporated into a website where fans can access the information. Statistics for similar balloon launches show a recovery rate of approximately 10% so it's quite possible that less than one hundred of the one thousand records launched will ever be discovered and the "Freedom at 21" flexi-disc will surely be a highly sought-after collectible for years to come. At a party in 2009 they had some whiskeys and became friends and started dicking around on guitar, writing their first song, a song about going down on your best friend, now lost to the sands of time. Despite a lukewarm reception at Nashville's Bluebird Cafe, they have been sitting on eachother's faces ever since, showing eachother their bruises and generally doing whatever they want when it works out that way.
