Crap! The last installment of the podcast came out in mid-February. When it’s been two months between release you know you’re doing something wrong. So, here’s an installment of some of the goods released in the interim – loads of good albums to dive into further. Another podcast edition is right around the corner, so devour this one quickly. Not off to a great start having twelve podcasts this year but, regardless, I think this one should be quite the pleasing listen. Quality over quantity, right?
If you’ve been reading the blog regularly you’ll likely be familiar with several of the included bands already but the podcast will still serve as a good reminder of some of the best new goods to come out lately.
I did break one of my own self-imposed cardinal rules and included an artist that is probably too big to be considered truly “local” but I’ll be damned if that Jessie Baylin record isn’t something everyone should hear. (more…)
One thing is for sure, Nashville has absolutely no shortage of great musical offerings well outside the Music Row realm. Granted, ole WOTT didn’t have quite as many actual podcasts as there were months in the year but I’d like to say we covered a good deal of the highlights from the last twelve months. But how do you boil down an entire year of releases into one comprehensive package? Unfortunately, you can’t.
The likes of The Ettes, Sugar Sk*_*lls, Kyle Andrews, Heypenny, By Lightning, Southern and many others all had superbly quality releases this year that everyone should spend time with. They are not, however, included in this mix. Being entirely comprehensive just isn’t possible. Their exclusion is not derived from a lack of enjoyment.
Other bands exist outside the scope of what We Own This Town is trying to expose. While I love The Black Keys as much as the next person, they don’t exactly need our help getting their name out there. Or someone like Jonny Corndawg, who put out a phenomenal record with Down on the Bikini Line, doesn’t actually live here anymore; so is ineligible.
Long story short, I hate that I was unable to include everything great from the last year. I am endlessly proud of the diversity of music that Nashville creates and wish there was a way for everyone to hear everything great; its just not practical. Despite that, I’ve compiled an hour and half of some of the most enjoyable tunes, to me, officially released in 2011 in these United States. Please enjoy.
As with the last few audio editions of the podcast this serves as a combination of a summary of some of the recent reviews as well as an introduction to new goods. It’s both familiar and fresh! This edition also runs a little longer than the usual release; there’s just that much good new music coming from the area – why exclude quality?
The next, and 50th, edition will be the Best of 2011. So, if you’ve got some nominations; let us know.
It’s been since early August that a full-on compilation podcast has emerged from We Own This Town. So, without further ado (because I know you were all waiting), here’s a mega edition of the podcast featuring a load of new music from around town. The mix covers a lot of familiar acts from the recent reviews but also maintains some new treats that haven’t been mentioned yet on the site.
Awhile back, Doug got together with Jeremy Ferguson to film a new We Own This Town Session featuring William Tyler – a man who seems to be involved in as many projects as you could imagine. Among them: Lambchop, Silver Jews, Hands Off Cuba, Charlie Louvin, Candi Staton, Wooden Wand, his own label and his own solo endeavors. That is to say, he’s in high demand and, obviously, incredibly talented. Please enjoy these performances of “Missionary Ridge” and “Tears and Saints” – both from his album Behold The Spirit.
After the success of the last podcast I have been hesitant to even think about putting together another compilation. I mean, why not just let that high note ride for awhile? Well, it seems I’ve gone long enough.
This edition of the podcast gathers together some of the better contributions you may have heard already from the blog along with, hopefully, a few quality surprises.
I’ll be honest; I know next to nothing about the hip-hop scene in Nashville. So, when it struck me that it would be interesting to compile a podcast of some of the more forward thinking acts coming out of our area I really had no idea where to start. Fortunately, I knew Sean L. Maloneywould. I hit him up one night with the request to put together a half hour of interesting songs and he turned it around in a days time. The end result is a blend of traditional hip-hop, soul, some R&B, beats and a good deal of great.
So, without further ado – here’s the 45th volume of the podcast. Curated by Sean L. Maloney and consisting entirely of the finest in Nashville based hip-hop. As someone coming from a place of total ignorance on the offerings of hip-hop from our town I think I can safely say that there’s no way you won’t be entirely engaged by this.
Thanks to everyone for the fanfare on the last podcast edition. Doug assures me that more video podcasts are in the works and will be coming down the pipe before you know it.
In the meantime, I’ve put together another edition of the audio podcast that I’ve no doubt you will enjoy. If you’ve been keeping up with the site you may hear some familiar tunes but there are certainly some new gems in there as well. It also runs a nice varied gamut of rock, psych rock, pop rock, indie rock and other various types of rock. No snoozers.
Remember this? Well, if you haven’t guessed by now, the results of said efforts can be seen above. We Own This Town’s fearless leader Doug Lehmann – along with help from Andy Snyder and the illustrious Jeremy Ferguson – put together this in-studio performance from D. Watusi. After enjoying the above video be sure to go pick up the Nashville’s Dead 7″.
